the kernels reached popping temperatures but because they're compressed in that iron cask they can't pop and when he releases the latch they all pop at once, hence the explosion

^^ yeah it takes a few minutes on the fire before they 'explode' em

around the same time as a microwave

it starts with him already heating the kernels up but it still takes about 3mins to pop
