Sold out, or very close to it.

Sure turned into a gorgeous day, too - see the shot from the south endzone cam at the start of the second half? Sunny, clear shot of the North Shore mountains... fantastic. That's the kind of view Kerfoot had planned for his stadium that the city wouldn't let him build. :failed:

Watched the game with a few friends and stalwart TFC fans (myself being one of those the last few years until the start of this game too though). I talked a big game before the match and I'm glad I was vindicated. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face from 15 in, and I still have a gigantic shit eating grin on my face. Only 1 corner for TFC (and that came in the final 4). Good stuff guys. Can't wait to move back to Vancouver.

He used to play soccer, too... but his brother Martin was a much better play, so he played for the Caps, while Steve settled for B-ball.

I was there. Section 201. Ghostrider was a little too far for me to bean him with anything in the poncho storm.

Fucking epic game. One of the best live soccer games I've ever seen. Lots of scoring chances, great defense, and a good crowd. I brought my new Whitecaps jersey and free scarf.

The moment of the game was actually the 4-2 goal by Toronto FC. Some hooligans behind me were chanting

"FOUR-TO-ONE...TORONTO YOU ARE DONE!"

The rest of us were just about to join them but then the 4-2 goal. It happened RIGHT as they said "DONE".

Without missing a beat, they started with

"FOUR-TO-TWO! TORONTO YOU ARE THROUGH!"

The entire section laughed.

I'll probably go to another few games this year. My friends are thinking New York Red Bulls.

Season tickets start at $319...I'm gonna watch another game or two and then decide if I want to buy or share a pair next year.

So, I watched the tape. Good for Vancouver, winning on their first outing in MLS. Now, I never followed MLS. Ever. Guess that will change :p

That said:

- Is that standard refereeing? My God, that ref was hideous.

- Equally hideous were both teams defence. Yuck.

- It was an... interesting... watch. Like watching Brazilian Serie C. What we would call a 'pelada'.

- Are there playoffs in MLS, or is it like the European/South American nationals, where the one with the most points wins? I'm too lazy to look it up.

- And, oh, I hope Vancouver gets better. Again, what I have seen of Toronto so far (saw a few games last year) has been almost depressing.

I will say it again. Whenever ANY Toronto franchise loses, its great

It is also true that Toronto is one of the worst sport markets in terms of performance. aside from the CFL, none of the major teams have made post season action in a LONG TIME

My dad got me and him season tickets, section 225, row 8. Really was a great atmosphere and really exciting game. I went to World Cup in South Africa, and while obviously I can't compare the atmosphere's, I did think that as a whole it had a good European vibe to it. I thought Toronto really wasn't that great. Both of our forwards are big guys with good heads, and it showed. I thought number 20 who had the beard and got injured at the end of the first half was our best player.

I got a chance to watch the game yesterday and it was one of the best outdoor sporting event I've watched in quite some time. The crowds were electrifying and the cheering were louder as the game went on.
I have never been a huge soccer fan but I think the Whitecaps are doing wonderful things in Vancouver. They have a solid team and like all Vancouver sports teams, they give back to the community.

With tickets starting from 20 bucks, there are no reason to not watch a Whitecaps game every once in a while. Especially in the summer with great sunny weather, it's an awesome family attraction.

I bought the $319 ones and sit in the corner. It's not that bad actually. I went to find some friends that were in the aqua section (behind the net) and you can't really see the whole game. The price I'd higher but i would rather sit where I'm sitting than pay more to sit behind the net.

I split a pair with my buddy. We will go to whatever we can together. If one of us can't make it, then we bring our gfs or whoever. For the price, you can't beat it. But both of us are huge soccer fans so we've been waiting for something like this for a while.

Also plan on traveling to Seattle when Vancouver plays the sounders at quest field. Anybody else in for a road trip?

Went to the game on Saturday, and wow, probably one of the most exciting sporting events I have ever been to. Just absolutely electric.

I was sitting pretty much dead center in section 211, five rows up so I had a great seat which made it that much better. Christy Clark was sitting right behind me :fullofwin:

Didn't get seasons tickets this year, but definitely going to pick up tickets to a few more games this summer.

I was really impressed with Davide Chiumiento, amazing footwork when he has the ball. Hassli and Harris also looked very good.

-Pretty standard reffing. MLS seems to let players get away with a lot to compensate for a, shall we say, substandard skill set compared to some of the elite leagues. That said, it does make for a more physical game where bigger players can push, shove and even occasionally steamroll and hit smaller players without getting carded or even called. Isn't that what American sports fans want to see instead of players rolling on the floor and getting carried away on a stretcher?

-There are playoffs in the MLS. Kind of a weird system, just one home and away game. The finals are just stupid IMO - neutral site with no top seed advantage.

What the bigger deal to me is the top four MLS teams going to the CCL (Concacaf Champs league) and the SuperLiga to battle it out against the top Mexican teams such as Cruz Azul or CF Pachuca, which gets pretty competitive as the Mexican league is in general considered a stronger group. If an MLS team wins THAT competition, they can then go on to play the Club World Cup where they might play a final against teams such as Internazionale, Barcelona or Manchester United. That's sort of the interesting thing about club soccer, there is a huge world to play against even if you win the MLS cup.

I'm not the biggest MLS fan. Only watched a few of the MLS finals prior to Vancouver joining, and really only knew/cared it existed after the David Beckham splash. But I could definitely get used to watching more of this if what we saw on Saturday was any indication of the rest of the season.

But this Sat isn't going to look as good. Chiumiento & Salinas injured, DeMerit & Boxall on national duty....

I don't like wearing long sleeves but the long looks better for the Whitecaps kit. The sleeves on the short sleeve are down to my elbows for some reason...the higher cuts like on the Italian jerseys look better.

My friends gave me a blue short sleeve for my birthday. I'm gonna go buy a white long sleeve myself.

Hassli was reckless, needs to be more careful when holding a yellow card but Philly got away with enough fouls for them to deserve to have someone sent off as well. Questionably offside goal, should have been a 0-0 draw, but lesson learned and move on.

I was at the game tonight and I agree, the officiating was terrible. (though Hassli needs to keep his emotions in check)

I thought the Whitecaps did a decent job of defending in this game, especially when they were 2 men down. Harris and Khalfan had some promising plays in the 2nd half, but couldn't finish.

Ronin
04-06-2011, 09:47 PM
Dumbass move by Hassli. You have to be aware that you already have a yellow. Taking off his shirt with another underneath shouldn't be a card, I think but still, don't put the ref in a position to call that. I think he cost us the win, to be honest. With 10 men, maybe that goal doesn't go in.

But fuck that ref...what a load of shit. Those were fouls...but not red cards.

svelt
04-06-2011, 09:48 PM
That was fucking hilarious. Heartbreaking for sure, but the entire sequence of events... questionable pk given, hassli scores, runs and takes off his jersey to reveal the exact same shirt underneath for the lolz, tosses his shirt to the fans, then gets a red card in utter disbelief. Thought he was being smart by trying to interpret the rules his own way but gets owned in the end.

The second dumbest thing I've seen on the pitch... but can't quite top what another Frenchman did at the '06 WC...

Ronin
04-06-2011, 09:59 PM
Well, you can't say Whitecaps games aren't exciting. Seriously, all three home games so far have been full of drama. The first two were basically Disney sports movies. This one was not quite as awesome but damn, still...so much happened. Loads of entertainment.

According to FIFA (http://www.fifa.com/aboutfifa/federation/news/newsid=92958.html) law 12:

The IFAB, the body responsible for the Laws of the Game, decided to add a detail to Law 12 relating to 'Fouls and Misconduct', stating: "A player who removes his jersey after scoring a goal will be cautioned for unsporting behaviour."

So as to avoid any ambiguities and facilitate the correct interpretation and application of the Law, a player will be deemed to have removed his jersey - and therefore become liable for a caution - if the jersey has been pulled over the player's head, or if his head has been covered by the jersey (see illustration - Removal of the jersey guidelines ).

My friend mentioned the play to me and he also thought you are fine as long as you have another shirt underneath but looks like the ref made the correct call.

Also Zidane's red card was provoked. I know he should be used to it as professional but hey, everyone has a line and for him I guess it's his family. Besides he has won like every important cup and regarded as a legend so I would say he retired in style! :fullofwin:

Good to see us beat Montreal today but it's a little bittersweet for me because I'd originally planned on being in Montreal this week.

After the first 25 minutes of good Impact possession and us instantly giving it away when we'd wrestle down the ball I was a little concerned but all in all a good ending. Teibert sure had some brilliant crosses today.

Still no. Without the fan interest, owners won't get the same level of return on investment. The revenue that top teams generate is massive, with sales of merchandise around the world, TV revenue, 60,000+ capacity stadiums, and something the MLS will never have, the Champions League, which gives the top European teams around 20 million Euros in TV revenue alone.

I love soccer, played it all my life and I do agree that MLS isn't in the same league as top tier Euro leagues, but its still really good. Last few years, MLS is beginning to get pretty good players coming over from Latin America and Europe and I think as the league continues to expand and get more corporate support, they will be able to retain top quality players.

Whitecaps are technically an expansion team, and they will have growing pains, but they show a lot of promise and if the team is managed well in the front office, they will become a fun and successful team to watch down the line.

As for people complaining with games being 1-0, etc.... well, you just don't get soccer.

Gh0stRider

The struggling Vancouver Whitecaps have fired head coach Teitur Thordarson and goalkeeper coach Mike Salmon.

Tom Soehn, the current director of soccer operations, will take over as head coach for the rest of the season.

The expansion Whitecaps have not won in MLS since opening day March 19 -- when they defeated Toronto FC 4-2 -- and have a 1-5-6 record.

Paul Barber, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer, says: "Teitur and Mike have served the club extremely well in recent seasons but we feel that today's changes are necessary in order to accelerate the process of turning around our difficult start to the season."

Soehn will have help from assistant coaches Denis Hamlett and Colin Miller.

Thordarson, a native of Iceland, took over as the Whitecaps coach in December 2007.

Surprised he got fired halfway through the expansion season. Before the start of the year they were praising him and saying how they were behind him 100%. I suppose they always say that though.

I wonder if there were some differences between what he was preaching to the players, and what Bobby L / Soehn wanted to see on the field.

One thing I didn't like about Thardarson's coaching though was getting the players to hang back all the time, then the defense would fire the ball up for hail mary's that guys like Hassli and Camilo could never get to. Seemed to happen 10-20 times a game at least and rarely did it ever work.

Need to play South American style... more ball possession!

I think the Jarju signing was a bust. He sucks.

It's really too bad that the Whitecaps season has gone down the tubes. There are some very good pieces on the team, but no system in place to take advantage of their talents. I look at a guy like Chiumiento and I wonder why he isn't playing Division 2 in Europe? Heck, even Camilo could crack a second or third tier league in Europe.

It's really too bad that they fired Teitur Thordarson too. His tactics might not have been appropriate for MLS, but he seemed like a really likable guy and he probably had the respect of the players. He only had a 1-year deal anyway, so they should have just hired a new coach in the summer if they wanted a change in systems.

I don't claim to be a world football expert or anything, but I imagine that MLS is equivalent to Tier 3 in Europe.

Since I've started watching the 'Caps, I've watched some EPL highlights and a few Champions League games. The passing and skill in those leagues is head and shoulders above MLS. Some of the EPL teams have been playing their pre-season games against teams in the MLS and the results speak for themselves. For example, the MLS all-stars got owned 4-0 against Man U and the Sounders got trounced 7-0 by the same club. And of course, Man U isn't even the best team in Europe and many argue that the Premier League is a step below the other European leagues.

Of course, we get to see the odd flashes of brilliance in MLS like Hassli's goal against Seattle.

Man U was runner up in champs league this Yr. So they're not the best in Europe but u make it sound like theyre not even close to being up there.

so MLS is pretty much equivalent to division 1 football in the UK?

Seems like other countries in the world take MLS soccer as serious as we do British hockey

^ We love you Long Tan! :troll:

Chiumiento was left off the roster today. Unless he's under contract next year, I'm guessing he won't be back next year.

It's a pleasant surprise that the addition of Mitchell has changed the look of the team. Rochat is playing his proper position and Harvey actually looks decent as an attacking winger. DeMerit hasn't made a mistake in 2 games. It's too bad that the season is ending as things are finally looking up for the 'Caps.

I have watched games at both stadiums and while BC Place is nice, a bit of atmosphere has been lost with the move. I've heard rumours that the Southsiders have been a bit polarizing and if that's true it's a shame because the crowd needs to be louder in the stadium.

Whitecaps unveil South Korean defender Young-Pyo Lee (http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/mls/story/?id=382203)

WHITECAPS UNVEIL SOUTH KOREAN DEFENDER YOUNG-PYO LEE

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps won the bidding war for Young-Pyo Lee without really trying.

The former World Cup star from South Korea said Wednesday he chose lifestyle over money when he decided to sign with the Major League Soccer club.

"The most important decision is my life and the future," said Lee when discussing his move to the MLS during an introductory news conference at B.C. Place Stadium.

Reports indicate the 34-year-old rejected richer offers to sign with the Whitecaps, who are looking to improve on a last-place finish in its inaugural campaign in North America's top league.

Lee joins Vancouver after two seasons with a club in Saudi Arabia.

"The club that he was on in Saudi wanted him to stay there," Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said. "I can tell you that it was at a very significant amount of money. He's made a life decision at this point to move here."

Lee has represented his homeland in three World Cups (2002, 2006 and 2010) and his 127 international caps also include appearances in three Asian Cup tournaments.

Lee also starred with famed Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, England's Tottenham Hotspur, Germany's Borussia Dortmund and FC Seoul, which he guided to K-League and Korean Super Cup championships. In the past two seasons, he helped Al-Hilal capture two consecutive Saudi Professional League and Saudi Crown Prince titles and also made two appearances for the Riyadh-based squad in the Asian Football Confederation Champions League.

Lee said he fell in love with Vancouver's ocean and mountains and wanted to experience a new city and culture while helping his two daughters learn English. Vancouver's large Asian population was not a determining factor in his decision but the community appealed to him.

"He had plenty of options and we're fortunate that we live in Vancouver, and Vancouver is one of the most livable cities in the world," Lenarduzzi said. "We're probably benefiting a lot from things that don't necessarily relate to football. But he's aware of the club. He's aware that we're in MLS. Those things combined have resulted in what we think is going to be the perfect marriage."

Wednesday's news conference attracted a large contingent of reporters from Asian media outlets, including China's national Xin Hua news agency. Lenarduzzi said the strong Asian interest is an added bonus, but was not a determining factor in the team's decision to sign Lee.

Although Lee has stopped competing internationally for South Korea, Vancouver's management group is convinced that he can still play at a high level.

"He's offered the playing side, the leadership side, the mentoring side and there's no doubt in my mind that he has considerable time in him in terms of what he can offer on the field," Lenarduzzi said.

Vancouver coach Martin Rennie added that Lee is an important addition to a defence that ranked among the worst in the league last season.

Lee's decision to sign with the Whitecaps for less money than elsewhere also proved that he wants to play on the West Coast for the "right reasons," Rennie added.

"It also sends a message to the other players that he's a guy who's done everything in the game and he's here because he wants to learn -- because he wants to succeed," Rennie said. "He's not here for a pay day. He's here for other reasons. That has to inspire players to do the best they can as well."

The Whitecaps are looking to Lee to fill a hole at the right fullback spot. Wes Knight, Jeb Brovsky and Jonathan Leathers shared most of the playing time there last season, but all are gone from the Whitecaps. With Alain Rochat well established at left fullback, Lee will switch from his usual left side to shore up the right side.

Rennie said he still wants the club to get better everywhere on the pitch but it is unlikely to make moves at forward after Brazilian striker Camilo and French counterpart Eric Hassli ranked among the league's scoring leaders. MLS veteran Atiba Harris is also slated to return now that he has recovered from a knee injury that kept him out most of the season.

"We're not looking to lose players," Rennie said. "We're looking to add more good players."

Notes: Whitecaps CEO Paul Barber, a former Tottenham executive, knew Lee from his days with the Spurs.

Solid striker. Tons of goals playing at Notre Dame. Apparently provides a lot of speed up front, faster than every guy on the 'Caps. Could be a good change up when Hassli subs out.

Well, good game this afternoon. Class finish by Le Toux at the start there and let's not forget about the great wall of Korea keeping Montreal out. If we can stay healthy we should be in pretty good shape this season.

Communication needs to be worked out at the back - there were some missed assignments.

I don't know what Philidelphia was thinking when they let go of Le Toux for cash. His work ethic alone is worth the money. Davide actually looked inspired on Saturday as well.

If the Whitecaps actually challenge for a playoff spot this season, support will only grow.

It's really a pity that we don't have a true outdoor, soccer-specific stadium for this team. If only the original soccer stadium in Gastown proposal went through..
