: Honda's Upcoming High-performance version of CR-Z would still be a Hybrid

No Turbo, but a more powerful Hybrid system.

To hear Autocar tell it, Honda has confirmed that it's working on a faster version of its disappointing CR-Z hybrid. Having suffered the slings and arrows of enthusiast who thought they were getting another CRX, Honda has said they will have a quicker version of the car out when the next-generation IMA hybrid system arrives.

They're keeping mum about what engine the augmented CR-Z will rock, but speculation is that the new model will put down about 160 hp between its gas and electric powerplants. Honda R&D chief Tomohiko Kawanabe says the company is leaning away from a turbo engine because a naturally aspirated set up will work better with the hybrid drive.
Kawanabe also indicates Honda won't let the power increase take away from the current car's fuel efficiency and C02 production numbers, so expect most of the new power to come from an improved electric motor.

The as-yet unnamed sportier CR-Z is still at least a year away, which makes sense, as the new hybrid system isn't expected on our shores until 2012, when it's due in the new Civic. Watch for updates as details emerge.

and there in lies the biggest problem: honda shouldn't need us to bitch in order to make a desirable car! :D

i'm glad they're doing this though. it's a much needed upgrade!

awwww that means the rumored Type R is out the window? ;[

i went to richmond automall yesterday, and saw the CRZ in the showroom. i really like it, but the current 122 hp and price kinda ruined it for me. this Si version is still not enough of an upgrade for me to really buy it ;(

Meh, tagline reminds me too much of the Ford SportKa's ads (or were those simply the viral ones floating around online?) - The Evil Twin.

fans want k20, turbo and or powerful gas engine without the hybrid. Honda, why u no give customers what they want?

Because tuners are a very small portion of the target market for the CR-Z, it's an ultra fuel efficient two seat commuter, just like the CRX was originally designed to be. A k20a2/3 in a CR-Z would destroy the fuel efficiency and raise the price, making it undesirable to the primary market who are comparing it to the Smart and Fiat 500.

Aside from that, in most if not all of our lifetimes the gasoline motor will go the way of the dinosaurs, tuning hybrids and full electrics is the future and I'm excited to see it happening.

Honda should just drop a conventional Civic engine (without VTEC) in the chassis, go back to a conventional dash, shed some pounds (manual only and make A/C an option), and sell it for under 20K.

That's essentially what Honda did with the Gen2 Si and it sold like hotcakes in North America.

see.. the thing about the CR-Z's fuel economy that bugs is that my friend who owns one has averaged 6.5L/100km with city driving. my 1990 civic dx hb averages 7.0L/100km. if all i'm going to save is 0.5L/100km with a hybrid engine........... screw it! make something interesting dammit!

The weight difference between the 2 cars explains the marginal improvements in fuel economy. Plus, newer cars in general are designed with highway fuel economy in mind because it's more marketable and because most people in NA spend their time on the freeway (Vancouver is anomaly in that respect.)

I bet a CR-Z drive train swapped into a CRX could get 5.0L/100km.

The first gen CRX weighs in at 777kg and has almost no electronics or other creature comforts that harm mileage. The CR-Z is 1236kg and filled with electronics that harm mileage..

The k motor actually gets good fuel economy, specifically the k20a2 with a 6 speed transmission.
