Money doesn't guarantee happiness: The Secret Fears of the Super Rich

The study is titled “The Joys and Dilemmas of Wealth,” but given that the joys tend to be self-evident, it focuses primarily on the dilemmas. The respondents turn out to be a generally dissatisfied lot, whose money has contributed to deep anxieties involving love, work, and family. Indeed, they are frequently dissatisfied even with their sizable fortunes. Most of them still do not consider themselves financially secure; for that, they say, they would require on average one-quarter more wealth than they currently possess. (Remember: this is a population with assets in the tens of millions of dollars and above.) One respondent, the heir to an enormous fortune, says that what matters most to him is his Christianity, and that his greatest aspiration is “to love the Lord, my family, and my friends.” He also reports that he wouldn’t feel financially secure until he had $1 billion in the bank.
If you're of the mindset that money is an assurance of happiness, here's a bit of insight on why it might not be all that one thinks it might be.
And no, I will not provide Coles notes.

If you're born with with money and could have everything you ever wanted, then money probably won't bring you happiness. For the rest of us who grew up in the working class and suddenly got rich, it sure as hell can make us happy for a lifetime!

It's all relative.
It's human nature to never be satisfied, to always strive for more and more and more
When I was younger, all I could dream of was having my license, driving, having this or that, you know. Fast forward to today. I have all those things, and more. Yet I still don't feel totally happy. I want more. But when I sit down and really think about it, I have everything I need - I should be the happiest guy in the world.

same here. i wish i could be happy with all the stuff i have, but im always sitting here thinking oh, "i could by this, or i could buy that". like right now, im thinking of buying an ipad2. do i need one? nope, but it seems like something totally pointless that would be cool to have.

"Great wealth is a misfortune; it attracts parasites and repels friends."
Rings pretty true to me.
I don't know about you guys, but I feel lucky to be where I am. I appreciate everything I have. When I start to lose perspective, a trip back to the old neighbourhood brings me down to earth again.
My kids aren't crackheads - my sons aren't douchebags and my daughter has her head screwed on right. They are not going to be a burden on society. That in itself, is gold. Everything else in life is a bonus.
If I were born rich, I wouldn't know what it's like to struggle.
Doesn't matter if you're rich, poor, or all things in between, in the end, we all end up 6 feet under. Having compassion and a good heart - making a difference. Those things make you rich, IMHO.
Don't get me wrong, money is great, but too much is not a good thing. If I won the lottery, I would spread the wealth. Give a lot of it away to people. People who are just down and out and need a helping hand to get them going again. Lotto Max is at 50 million again. Wow!
Money doesn't guarantee happiness,
but it sure fucking helps.

All money does is give you more choices. Whether you are able to make good use of those choices is another thing.

of course money buys happiness if your smart enough
From the first day of your life when you have a bill to pay, a mortgage, etc. what do you think about 100 times a day?
Money
if you didnt have to think about somthing 100 times a day, that wouldnt make you a happier person?

No longer having to work Monday to Friday 9-5. That would bring tears of joy to my eyes.
Then I remember how less others get paid for how much more labour they do in other countries, then I just shut up.

thats the problem..when you can actually do this it just isn't that much fun anymore. "constant luxury is, in a sense, no luxury at all."
Thats the thing...when you have too much of everything and can have it anytime... it just isn't that exciting. Even sex. hahaha We want what we can't have and stuff thats hard to get and takes alot of work to get.

lol I was just quoting the song
I haven't really put much thought into what it's like to be rich but I kinda doubt I'd change my lifestyle that drastically. Personally I prefer to keep a low profile.
So....is Charlie Sheen happy?
Perfect example...........

That depends on how educated a person is! If someone has never thought about suicide, having money or not having money won't affect their chance of suicide.

i think must of us forget that money in itself is a luxury. Something we truly don't need to live but, we choose to accept it as it is. I think of money as the middleman for bartering. When I buy something I think of it as how many hours I worked for it. If I want to buy a video game for 70 bucks, i say to myself that thats about half a days work for me, not that it is 70 bucks. It keeps me in check and keeps my bank account above 0 :P.
