: Closest you've been with death

Share any past experiences where you could have died if not for ______ .

I`ll start off

I was riding my bike (elementary school days) down a very steep hill, suddenly I lost control and crashed into the middle of a very busy street but my friend was there and quickly pulled me off and onto the side walk before the cars almost crashed into me. I only ended up with bandages wrapped around both my arms, legs, and face.

Hopefully hasn't been posted before, I searched though didn't find anything.

Speeding along Dollarton Highway on the way to work in an Integra GSR. Was doing about 110km/hr as I was late (young and dumb) hit the ruts the buses make and hydroplaned sending me into a flat spin down the road. There was a Telephone Pole and then Cement road Barriers and the way the car was spinning it just happened to slide through the middle of the 2 going backwards. I went into the ditch and hit a tree going straight backwards. When I came to my senses I was laying kind of half out the hatch of the car with rain falling on my face. The seat broke backwards and formed a sort of launch ramp that would have had me laying in the forest somewhere had my feet not caught on the lap belt part of my seatbelt. I untangled my feet rolled backwards out of the hatch and took a look at the car. The back of the car was folded around the tree and the back bumper was touching the rear seats. I climbed out of the ditch and some guy was there and he asked if I was ok and that he had already called the ambulance. When the fire truck got there they said "Where's the Dead Guy?" I waved and said "Right here." They were dumbfounded how I was able to walk away without a scratch on me.

Now I'm paranoid as shit driving in the rain.

Berz out.

when i was 14, i was roller blading down windsor street to marine drive to go to the gas station on fraser and marine.. as i was rolling down the hill and i picked up so much speed..when i tried to brake my right rubber brake broke off and couldnt stop any more since i was going down pretty fast. so i decided to hop onto the sidewalk and grabbed a light pole.

other than major bruise on my arm from stopping myself to go into traffic ,and a pair of fucked up blades, i would have been in a major accident involving cars.

holy shit..

in grade 4, i was chasing my friend in the classroom and all of a sudden I tripped and hit my head on one of the desk legs (which had sharp points at the bottom). I remember seeing a spotch of blood on the floor, another classmate carrying me to the principal's office, then me somehow ending up in a hospital.. afterwards i found out i have stitches in my forehead :(

Another one was when i was driving my bike and I sped up to go across a crosswalk, and with the corner of my eye I see a van coming. The van then fricking hits my bike at about 20km? (it was in a school zone.) And luckily in that moment i did a martial arts dive as fast as i could and rolled onto the cement floor.. fucking driver doesn't even stop to apologize, or help me out, and there went my $300 bike :2finger:

abt 2 years ago... it was raining pretty hard, i was taking the exit from knight st on to alderbridge (going from vancouver to richmond), as I try to merge to the left lane, as the right inside lane eventually leads to an exit, my car hydroplaned and did a full 180, now I am facing the wrong way of traffic in the middle of 3 lanes while cars going pass me in the rain at like 80-90KM/hr all the while i was in a 96 corolla with no air bags...

BF was driving me to UBC in a Honda Si on 41st. The lights at Angus had just turned green when we reached the intersection so we just kept going. Some guy pushed his luck, ran his stop sign and made a left turn as soon when we got into the intersection. Had my bf not swerved a little to the left to try to avoid a full on t-bone... who knows what would've happened. The other car hit my side right behind my seat, and we spun out and my bf's side hit another car headon. The Si was totalled, but we walked away with matching nasty bruises on our arms and whip lash.

Interesting fact: there's now a barrier at that intersection.

close to? i was over it.
when i was younger, we got rear side ended, our car went in a 360. our car crashed into the railing of the overpass by still creek mcdicks.
half our car was over the edge, above the grass on the bottom, about 15 meters up.
i was in the front seat (i was old enough), our car didnt tip over.
had our car fallen, we wouldve landed upside down 15meters below, all of us being dead.

Driving on the freeway in Japan for the first time, on my first day driving there. The signs there are very obscure (and there are no signs for merging lanes) so I was just leaving the toll area onto the freeway. I didn't realize I was even on a merging lane at the time, and next thing I know I am a few feet away from being smoked by a big truck. He didn't honk or anything...

Luckily although I was being stupid, I was able to react quickly enough to avoid a collision.

I wasn't scared until later that night when we talked about what happened... How close we were to getting smoked at high speed still kind of freaks me out :lol

Looking back on it and understanding the condition better I was in no real danger but at the time I was pretty freaked out. Last year I underwent major surgery on my legs to correct my chronic exertional compartment syndrome and had bilateral simultaneous fasciotomies done. When I came out of anesthesia I was surrounded by people telling me to try to cough and take as deep of breaths as possible, I was being wheeled around on my stretcher to get x-rays of my chest and whatnot. When I tried to ask what was going on I was given the extremely short answer of "part of your lungs have collapsed" which terrified me because I was having trouble breathing and while I kept trying to take deep breaths and remember to cough I kept fading in and out and in my doped up state was pretty sure that I was going to die. Turns out that acute postoperative atelectasis is fairly common and that with the massive amount of supplementary oxygen I was getting it was just a matter of time before I recovered, but for the first several hours (felt like days) in recovery I was pretty sure that I was doomed.

last summer, jacked up my car with the OEM jack....took the rear wheel off and decided to have a quick visual inspection of the struts and camber arms...as I got out and stood up, the jack failed and the car came crashing down...one of those "I'd be dead" moments.

Similar to yours. I was changing the oil on my car and switching out a flat. So i was parked in the church across the street lot. I was to lazy to get the huge jack. I used my oem jack. Jacked my car up. Went under, undid the oil bolt and the oil filter. I heard a creaky noise. Pulled my headout quickly. Jack tipped over because it was on uneven grounds. Car hit the floor hard with my head 5inches away.

Another time was my friends birthday at his house. It was just mutual friends and it went we'll then someone called their older buddies. I was pretty much trying to stop a fight between these two guys when a third guy came in shooting. The bullet went passed me and into the guy i was holding back leg. Everyone ran after the shot. Someone stole my brandnew nike shox. Worst party ever

Opening day olympics ceremony in Richmond. Driving back on number 2, I see the car ahead of me was doing a left turn, and I stupidly thought it would be a smart idea to follow him and do a U-Turn...

Well, the van turned, and as I was just beginning my turn, a car blew by the intersection and I JUST stopped in time.Pretty sure an extra inch forward, and he woulda smoked my front bumper. My wife was in the passenger seat, and she would have been smoked. I still get goosebumps thinking about "what if".

But I swore to myself that night forward, drive as safe as possible. Only takes a splitsecond bad decision to change your life forever.

I dont remember when this happened but was told to me. When I was about 4 years old, I was left unattended near a swimming pool...poor me. Next thing you know, someone spots me, legs hanging up the air in the pool. My face was blue and was pretty much dead for a min or two til someone performed CPR. Apparently after I told them I saw a white light!! What if I walked through it...Freaky shit.

Me and my buddies went cliffdiving from a cave in the beach. It had recently rained so the waves were a bit stronger than usual. Nobody really wanted to jump in, so i volunteered to go in first to literally test out the waters (like a dumbass).

After a few minutes I was getting exhausted just trying to stay afloat so I tried to climb the flimsy wooden ladder up to dry land. The rough waves wouldn't allow me to do so easily though so it kept repeatedly hammering me against the rocks.

My buddies tried as hard as they could to help me out but it was just too slippery. I honestly thought I was gonna drown. Then I finally used every bit of my remaining strength to just climb the fuck up. I finally did, luckily escaping with only minor cuts + bruises, as well as a busted fingernail.

When I was 15 I went Dirt biking in Squamish on the logging roads. I was on a 250cc while my uncle was on his 400cc.. We were cruising on the curvy roads and on the side was a huge 50+ foot drop.. I was trying to keep up but cut a corner too close and ended up having to go wide, I got to a point where there was no road but the cliff slammed on the brakes and was litterally 2inches from the cliff.. Scared the shit out of me since If I went down he wouldnt of known where I wouldve dropped. Throught out the day I wouldnt take the bike outta 3rd gear. Was a scary moment.

On a side note, Almost broke something driving down a loggin road went to pass my uncle around a large corner, just as the corner ended there was this huge water way going right across the road about 2ft wide basically hit it front wheel first going atleast 40+km, flipped the bike and myself. Hurt like a bitch.. Funniest part was when I fell my bike made it back on its 2 wheels and was heading for 2 guys who just did the same thing and was just resting for recovery.

Another time dirt biking in Nanaimo, It was near the end of the day of doing trails so we were just cruising the track and just hanging out.. I was just cruising over the medium size jumps since I was riding a 4 stroke and was farely new at riding.. Just as I was about to call it a day I figure what the hell just one more cruise over the humps, as I come around the corner I see the mound and go towards it, just then my arm stiffens up and now my bike is WOT heading for the jump. At this point I'm 10ft in the air table top style I push my bike off just in time for me to land and roll. Came out with a tone of scratches, bent handle bars and needed a new clutch handle..

1. Trying to sneak into a rave back in the day. Climbed this 8 foot high construction fence, smashed out of my mind. Got to the top, in my drunken stupor thought I could jump from this flimsy fence and land on my feet. Didn't work so well, my foot got caught and I landed face first HARD into concrete. Lost a tooth, broke my nose, busted up my lip badly. Doctors said I could've been paralysed or died it I didn't work out so much, and was physically fit.

2. Stabbed at during a robery in the Caribean.

3. Shot at by corupt military in Nigeria.

ooh i've had many :|

i just asked my mom, and when i was about 8 months or 9 months i was crawling around near where my dad worked (once again) and i stumbled and got a nail through my throat luckily it missed the big vein that goes through there

as a child (age 1-2), my dad always worked on cars and shit, my mom had got her cousin to babysit me, she took her eyes off me for about 2 minutes i had walked outside, tripped and got the sharp side of the hammer to the side of my head

hmm 4 or 5 years old? i was biking around the local highschool, and my bike had hit a rock and there was a electrical pole that was left on the pavement there from the portable building that used to be there, the pole hit my belly when i fell lucky enough the pole wasnt sharp enough to go THROUGH my stomach

at about 17, my friend and I were driving in his 63 impala, on a highway between qualicum beach and horne lake... it was during lunch hour and we were trying to get there and back in time for class cause we wanted some used junkyard parts.

the car was new to him, and didnt know there was a large bulge in the tread on a rear tire.

Old car, no seatbelts, at about 60 mph the car started vibrating, then passed at 70 mph... then at 80 mph it came back more violent... tried to slow down, and 75,70,65,60 all were voilent now... BAM, Rear tire blew on highway just as the road curved for oncoming bridge. The impala turned and road up the median maybe a foot, then did a complete sideways slide across both lanes.. literally blocking both lanes of traffic while cars swerved to avoid us. traffic slowed and we pushed the car to the side of the road.

1 morning while heading to school, driving north on 4 road crossing grandville ave. For sure I had a green light as another car was beside me crossing that intersection at the sametime. Right as I'm in the middle of the intersection I look left and see a green crv comming towards me at a really really fast pace. Guess what, it was a clai driving and I'm pretty sure she didn't even know she had a red light. She came so close to me I could literally see what kind of light bulb she's using, I remember seeing the headlight right in my face.

Another time was when I was about 5 years old, I remember crossing a big intersection with my mom. As I finish crossing and step onto the sidewalk, a motorcycle cruiser clipped me and knocked me over. I THOUGHT I missed the step onto the side walk and fell but my mom who was about 10 steps behind me said the motorcycle clipped me. This one happened when I was in china.

happened a month after i got my new car. i wasn't a 100% used to how the engine delivers power and how it reacts in the rain while at WOT. the car's rear end basically lost traction because of shitty tires and when vtec kicked in (no joke) around 7k and crashed right into the center divider on knight bridge. A second later i was starring at pavement because the rear end actually rode up the center divider at aprox 150km/h. the whole time i was thinking "oh shit im gonna flip over the bridge. get ready." luckily the car landed back on 4 wheels and did multiple 360s from the very top of knight bridge all the way down to the "welcome to vancouver" sign.
i couldn't believe i didn't hit anything else, other than the first impact with the center divider.

I've had 3 cases of head injury (each time thinking I was going to die)

1.) When I was about three years old I feel through a glass table. Shards of glass was wedged in my forehead in addition to a minor concussion from hitting the floor head first afterwards. Stayed in the hospital for a good 2 weeks and had 20 something stitches to my head. To this day, 18 years later, my family is still against buying any form of glass furniture.

2.) when I was in grade 3, I was on a see-saw when some idiots and myself decided it would be funny to have someone jump off the other side with me sitting on the opposite side. What followed was a mid-air somersault in a elementary school playground followed by the painful meeting of my head and the centre of see-saw. 7 stitches later, I was healed but with a lifelong fear of any form of cantilever device.
Oh yeah, an ugly scar like harry potter's now resides on my forehead, and hurts whenever I sweat.

3.) About half a year after my experience above. my undivided attention on my bike caused me to flip forwards on the perimeter of the same playground. Only this time one of those little nasty playground pebbles/filler got lodged in the back of my head and caused an infection. A trip to the hospital due to concussion symptoms and 5 stitches later and I'm all good.

Snowboarding on the Symphony run on Whistler. It was foggy that time and the top of the mountain had almost no visibility. As I was sitting on a slope to rest, from behind, a loose snowboard came flying down and nearly hit me on the back of my head by less than 2 inches. .45 to my head by a shaky drug addict;

5.56 rounds hitting a wall three feet in front of me.

Both in Rio.

Do I win?

Edit: And there was this time too that I was in a 767, and we hit severe turbulence and the plane dropped "about 200 feet", according to the co-pilot after the flight. That was some scary 5 seconds there, but the gun-to-head and bullets-in-the-wall still beats it.

I was about 9 years old in the Philippines on a tricycle (Motorcycle taxi with cart attached to the side, no doors, no seatbelts). Traffic was busy as you would imagine a busy street in Asia full of motorcycles. I got off the seat when we were near our stop at my cousin's house and somehow ended hanging off one of the cart's bars with one hand as the bike was still moving quite fast. I struggled pretty hard not to let go. Luckily, I did hold on until the motorcycle was able to stop. If I had let go I would of probably rolled under a bunch of other bikes.

My cousin gave me shit for forgetting to pay after we got off.

I spent 6 months in the Philippines and almost died at least once.

was drinking, tried the breathlyzer they had at the place and it read .25ish, decided to drive anyways. had 3 friends in the car and they were keep saying, "drive safe." i got annoyed and decided to speed upto 160km/h to give them a 'scare'. suddenly i saw a cop on the other side of the highway barrier and i know he saaw me so i sped more in hopes that i can gtfo of the area before whoever he called on radio can get to me. upon the highway exit i was going ot fast so i started to slide but i managed to control it and basically drifted the whole 'roundabout' exit. slowed down and everyone got home safe no tickets, fucking passed out rightaway on the bed. next time ill drink a little bit less when i drive :)

a few years ago-747 powerless and in a nose dive,

This summer
--- had a fireball shoot through a 6" pipe my welder was cutting with his acetylene torch while putting on a pressure regulator/guage with a flange on the other side of him, which caused the damn thing to fly about 50feet in the air and almost hit me (PPE or not, that would have hurt pretty bad).

same week i got chased up a tree blind next to my oil camp i was staying in with 5 other guys by a mother black bear and 3 cubs. I was the last one up and it was Face to Face on the opposite side of the stairs from me. Jumped over its foot as i ran up the ladder and no i never spilled a drop of my beer ;)

Then a month after when i left work to come back to BC my friend and i got run off the dirt road by oncoming traffic and the car after fishtail right to the otherside of the road then the ass end went into the edge of the ditch causing the car to whip to the left crossed the road then flipped. got away with a few cuts and bruising.

i was coming back from Merritt last summer when the tires popped from the heat, lost control of the car, and the car went off the cliff. fortunately, no injuries, but the car is now a goner. rip 91 mazda protege.

- i don't know if this was close to a death or not , but went biking w/ friends last summer around hastings area @ 10pm-ish , and i crashed face-first into the back of a minivan
got my front tooth KO'd, and the one beside it damaged . mouth was bleeding like a bitch and had a mild concussion . i fell on my knees and hands when i tried to get up after crashing, couldn't even stand up LOL

- climbing up a small waterfall up in Squamish , almost slipped and drowned but hung onto one of a tree's branches for dear life and pulled myself up . i'm not a great swimmer so GG

Dam this may sound stuipd, but first time blazing it was during school and I got really friken stoned. My heart pounded so fast, everything was spinning, everything was so slow andloud, my chest was burning thought it was like a heart attack, my mouth was dry, MY legs and hands were shaking
I was freaking out, thought I wouldn't last it. And I had two more classes to go through till the day ended . Didn't enjoy any minute of it
