Rule Review: No conversations in threads

Hey folks,

i was wondering if you guys could review the rule below. it seems a little harsh to disallow people from asking questions from the op. If critical information (info that others will also find useful) is missing from a post (ie. size, color, condition etc.) shouldn't the person be allowed to ask the question on the thread instead of PRIVATELY messaging the op?

Just my 2 cents because i got dinged for replying "what size lcd are you looking for " to a thread that said "WTB:LCD"..

--

No conversations in threads

To re-iterate a rule that was stated above under "Selling for Profit, Lowballing, Thread-jacking, Chatting and Flaming NOT TOLERATED", this means that there is ABSOLUTELY no chatting in threads. This includes but is not limited to asking questions, answering questions, commenting, giving "free bumps" or anything. If it is not your thread, DO NOT POST. Instead, use the PM function and ask the OP. The only person that is posting is the OP and it is ONLY for bumping.

Causes the thread to be bumped which puts the OP in an advantageous position. Hypothetical situation, a person can create a thread with little to no information then lure everyone to start posting to keep the thread bumped. At what point do we draw the line? Also, it prevents those who whore the B&S to keep on posting "you forgot ______" to rack up their post count.

I understand where you are coming from and you are trying to help the OP out but PMing is the only viable option that doesn't cause consequences in all other fields of the B&S.

Plus if others will find th info useful, they will pm the op themselves and if it's anything that will help with the sale, the op will just update the post.

tiger_handheld, I understand where you're coming from. And as much as I hate CRS for giving me my first infraction in the B&S section, I agree with the rules.

Many users, like myself like to use the "New Posts" button at the top. And it gets quite annoying after awhile seeing the same post being bumped again and again due to stupid questions / comments.

What's more interesting is....same thread, points given by the same Mod. Why did you receive 10 points...while CBRx only received a "1 Point warning" ? Just doesn't seem fair to me....

I've totally lost count of how many points/infractions I've given out.

Worse yet are the amount of bans I've handed out in the fashion forum alone.

I think of all of the mods, I'm in the top 5 for all time points and bans handed out. I think !SG is first but that is because he does 999999999 point bans which are ridiculous and so I can never catch up to that.

i think you can pick out the repeat offenders. i only frequent b & s when i'm in the market for something. thanks for the feedback.

i never noticed the point discrepancy. it doesn't matter to me as long as i can still use b & s when i need it. To me RS points are not serious biz - unlike other people. i just wanted a rule clarification - cuz i thought the rule was a little harsh.

So basically people (other than the OP) will be able to reply to a thread?

That would be my bad. I was going to give CBRx the same points but clicked the wrong option. As long as the user gets the message, then i'm good.

Instead of penalizing the people trying to clarify a thread with inadequate info (product description, location, price, etc), doesn't it make more sense to issue points to the OP for starting a thread lacking pertinent information?

Absolutely.

This happens as well but it is nearly impossible to check every thread that comes along without taking up every single possible moment of a moderator's day.

Totally agree as I'm a mod on a few other boards.

On here, I just click on items that might interest me, have bad titles or seem to get a lot of posts in a short period of time.

I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to have a strict no post rule or to change the B&S so that only the OP can post. As long as the posts help clarify the item details, I think they should be ok. I'm sure there are a lot of guys, like me, who hesitate to post, with the intent of helping with details, in fear of getting points for their trouble.

ie. In this thread I was going to post what the bolt pattern was and where the OP could find the wheel dimensions and offset. It would've saved an extra 4 or 5 bumps.

Obviously, "PM'd" "still for sale" "nice car" type posts are useless.
