: This year's Vancouver auto show made me feel a little sad

This year's vancouver autoshow kinda made me feel a little depressed. Sure, the it could have been bigger and perhaps a few concept cars would be nice, but it's not so much the displays than the attendants.

When I first stepped into the big showroom (whatever it's called), first thing I noticed was that the majority of the attendants go straight for the luxury brand displays. The mercedes-benz floor was crowded. It was hard to even walk around the area with the amount of people checking out their cars. Meanwhile, poor the Volvo's beside them have barely gotten a gander, the only ones that sat inside them were just kids. Ford (right across MB), was barely noticed only by a few people who took quick look before heading into the holy land that is BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz.

As a fellow car lover, it kinda hurts, because of all the other car manufacturers are making remarkable cars but do not get the attention they deserved, they were unappreciated. Like the Fiesta, a fun hot hatch that wasn't designed like crap. The VW's new TDI engines, which boosts 26MPG city in the Touareg. Even the fierce and boldly coloured Raptor SVT got beaten in popularity by the pre-owned 2008 E350.

Did anyone else feel this way?

....because some brands are more desirable than others...?

This year?? It's always been like that!
Most of the people in the BMW, Lexus & Mercedes area are tire-kickers. They just want the experience of sitting in a car they can't afford at the present moment. IMHO.

There is your problem. Don't expect people to share your sentiment. Looking at cars without having any brand bias is rare. You must actually have a love for cars and an interest in the engineering that goes into making a production vehicle. It is fun to think about what the companies would have to be producing if everyone was like you and only interested in the actual product not just the price tag.

some manufactuers launched more remodelled line ups this year, hence the crowd around those cars...

It makes sense that people would spend more time at the luxury brands..? Am I missing something?
When people go to the show, I'm sure the cars they're most excited to see aren't the Lancer and Sonata.

I thought it was odd seeing the Merc SLS supercar left on the floor while the SLK was placed on the stage platform.

i dont think the new SLK is in production yet so they put it on the platform just like CL63 and just like bmw with the 6rs and 1M so they put the SLS on the floor with dividers around so that people can see the interior

The autoshow gets worse and worse every year. I declined to go this year even with free tickets.

Plus there are always less and less freebies.

Lol last year Suzuki didn't even bother bringing their cars in, the only has a couple of bikes

those "poor" Volvos had the ugliest interiors out of any of the cars that were there. The interior guys behind those POS should be shot.

I don't even bother going to the auto show any more because you can see all the cars - including most of the "exotic" cars - on the road everyday. I'd go to a show to see old-school collectible cars of any make, not a bunch of everyday exotics and econoboxes.

Lined up, paid $15 bucks a pop to see the auto show and got the

"Metro Vancouver Car Dealership Show"

I mean, it's the same every year but it's a lot smaller this year too in the Convention center but at least show some creativity and put on more show cars.

Hopefully next year when it goes back to BC Place, it's going to be better.

Other than that, a lot of pics where put on facebook, might as well not have gone!

I noticed the same thing with the Volvo area. One possible reason was that all their cars (except one I think) were white! 6 or 7 white Volvos doesn't not help their image if they're trying to be more exciting and fun - it just reinforces people's impression that they're appliances.

I agree with the Volvos. Took a walk around the C30. It looks decent on the outside until I sat inside. The interior just turned me off; mainly the center control panel. It was so plain and ugly. Just a flat board with some buttons. Reminded me of the center console of a early gen. G35. :failed:

Sorry to say it, but the autoshow is about selling cars. It's not about giving 16 year olds a chance to drool over supercars and matte wraped imports.

The Ford floor was fairly busy. The Mustangs, new Focuses, Explorers, and Lincolns were very busy with actual buyers. If you are a new-car buyer and you want to see all your choices in one building, the autoshow delivers - 100%.

All the supercars and such are there like candy just to suck in as many people as possible. The most important products are the ones that actually sell.

Personally, I think the concepts are a total waste of time and engery. If you're gonna bring a concept to the show, be a man and put it into production or else don't bring it. There is no point showing off a concept that no one can ever buy. Fortunately, I didn't see any concepts at all this year. Everything was a production model that you could buy. (correct me if I'm wrong..)

There was a concept, but for the love of me I cannot remember who made it. It looked like a Vensa/XB with suicide doors. Inside where thin beige seats that look like they were molded to the center console and floor.

Most of the cars don't really warrant a look, unless you're planning to buy one, or it's a dream car. Personally, I went just to have a look at the LFA and the Civic concept, and the Genesis Coupe and Jag XJ were a nice bonus to try out. Mainly LFA lol...

as i must agree that every year the auto show seems to go down a little.

I thought it was so much better held in the convention center compared to the old bc place.

Also i was surprised by the Volvo section. It was pretty big, compared to a not so popular brand. I too noticed that 95% of their display cars were white and thought to myself wtf?

as my own honest opinion. I like the volvo interiors. They are comfortable, simple, clean, and not so cheap like other manufacturers. They are also plainlessly easy to work on. Especially to change that waterfall like center console.

I guess working at a volvo dealership and owning one has been a big influence on me.

Correct ME if I'm wrong but aren't concepts really just ideas thrown out by manufacturers to see how the public responds to it as well as a showcase of their capabilities/technology? I think if a particular car gets enough positive buzz and interest around it from attendees they will potentially put it into production versus a car that doesn't. So in a way, they're testing their idea. I mean its ALOT cheaper than simply throwing a car out into production. Like the Granite there, I think it was an interesting car that could compete with some of the Scions and Kia Soul.
