When you trade in your old car to a dealership, they will usually try to sell it by posting ads on their website and maybe even Craigslist. But what if no one buys it? Where does it go?

I traded in an old car of mine and I'm somewhat curious:
1. How much they are asking for it
2. Where the car is right now

The car could be on a diff lot or else gone to an auction.

But seriously, depends what dealership it is, a lot will not keep trades unless they are newer, they will just wholesale them to the used lots, or sell them to employees or whatever.

If they do decide to attempt to sell it themselves, it will go to whoever buys it, whether it be a customer, a dealership off the lot, or a dealership through the auction.

Just look for your car on craigslist/buysell with similar kms. Which dealership is, I can probably tell you who they wholesale to.

I've been searching on those places with no luck. I traded my car to OpenRoad Hyundai.

How long ago did you trade it in and was it a newer vehicle? And why do you want to find it?

Feb 14, and it's a 2003 Nissan SE-R. I'm simply curious how much it got sold for and if they treated the car nicely. :)

it probably got auctioned off for book value already.
or at a junkyard being scraped for parts lol.

They wouldn't have auctioned it off, it's more cost effective to give it to their wholesaler. Chances are the dealership who ended up selling it won't tell you what it sold for but they might give you an idea of who it sold to.

Yup, in my experience if they can't sell it (too old, too many accidents, oddball car) then it'll go to auction.

A new car dealership will determine whether they will sell your trade in on their lot depending mostly on mileage and condition. When I worked at Toyota the highest mileage car I've seen on the used lot was 230,xxxkm, the car was a 97 QX4.

EDIT* I should add that the pos cars that get traded in are sold in groups to small used car dealerships such as BC Dealers Trade In Center.

Dealers like to make it seem like they move cars fast.. i was told after 3-4 months if they can sell the used car themselves, they wholesale it to shady dealers... thats why there are sooo many shady dealers popping up..

They would have sold it to a wholesaler. It may have passed through one, or many wholesalers before landing at a used car lot, or directly to a retail customer. A lot of the time it's not worth it financially to sell older cars at the auction.

when i traded my accord to a Jimmy Pattison dealership. they took it in for 7k.. and the next week, i saw it on the lot for 14k.

i asked them why the markup and they did not fix the stuff that they deducted from me.. they said it cost money to park it. i gave them the rolled eyes and left

Your car was wholesaled out. I can't say for how much.

How are you liking your Gen Coupe?

No problem, I understand that. Are you able to say where it went to? If a specific name cannot be mentioned, can you give me a rough location?

The Genesis is awesome. :) The sales, Valentino and the business manager, Tina, both were great.

man you could've just messaged me and i could've told you that your car was gone from the back parking lot the day after you dropped it off! would've saved you a lot of hunting on the openroad site and stuff. i drove it about 10m from the back to the front :fullofwin:

also, yeah, valentino's an awesome guy :D

Which Tina did you meet? The younger one or the older one?

The younger, Asian one. You know her?

Not personally, but I used to work at Hub Insurance across the street and I used to talk to her once in a while when I was doing insurance at the dealerships.
