Chartwells ???
I feel sorry for those kids. Chartwells is also the company serving food at BCIT and it's overprice and bland. I hated the caf at BCIT.

IIRC, some local schools moved to ban unhealthy snacks in vending machines, briefly replacing them with overpriced vegetable snacks. Schools lost money, and they went back to the "healthy" versions of the old snacks.
This, on the other hand will hurt families, especially low-income ones, in the wallet if it catches on. When I was in high school, I only bought lunch from the school cafeteria maybe 25 times over my entire high school career. The rest of the time, I brought it from home because I could put together a lunch that costs 25-50% less than buying the equivalent served that day. It wasn't too healthy at times, but it was food I liked, and it saved my family a hell of a lot of money, especially since both my brother and myself are big eaters.
How do you promote healthy CHOICES by forcing a single option on the kids? It doesn't make sense at all.

so if you dont like whats in the cafeteria you either starve or go get fast food?
why should it be up to the schools to make "healthy choices" for YOUR kids

childhood obesity is an epidemic in the states (moreso than here). while i don't agree with them forcing food on the students, it's better than the garbage normally served at school cafeterias. fries, hotdogs, pizza, etc.. do they taste good? hell ya! but how many of the kids actually do sports/exercise to burn those calories off?
this isn't really news, it's been a topic of discussion down south for years.

at least this way the kids will have 1 healthy meal a day...because once they go home thos kids are just going to sit infront of a tv/computer and play games/watch tv and then most likely eat another non healthy meal...that 1 healthy meal a day can make a difference. they'll grow to like the food...once they get to their last couple years in highschool, if they havnt made a healthy lifestyle choice by then...its all downhill from there....

damn, the high school kids have it real bad, i cant imagine this will promote healthy eating, bettin half of the kids are just gonna starve and eat after school..
as someone has mentioned above, it will hurt the low income families alot, i never bought cafe food at my high school, was WAY too OVER PRICED... $5/day everyday is huge =.=

i guess i see where theyre coming from - in the american inner city if its a homemade lunch its usually a bag of chips. with that said, inner city kids cant afford to eat out for lunch....but maybe starvation will lessen the obesity rate ;-) Posted via RS Mobile |

Legally, are they allowed to ban foods? I understand that for many families, the parents don't know jack shit about nutrition. But a school isn't private property, it's public. How do they have the right to control the substance allowed on public property, especially food!
In hippie-left-wing-canada, it makes sense that something like this can go ahead, but in America? That just doesn't seem right.

My daughter's school policy is - no soda or junk food is sold on the property with the exception of the monthly bake sale.
Her teacher has a further policy that they can have water bottles at their desk all day but no sugary drinks (which has encouraged the kids to drink more water), and that they may snack on 'healthy' snacks during class time as much as they like as long as it's not disruptive. They also keep a large basket of fresh fruit and veggies in the classroom so kids who don't bring some from home can have healthy snacks during class time if they like.
Kids can bring what ever they like for lunches and recess.
I like this policy personally, while it encourages healthy choices, it still allows room for parents to decide what their kids eat for lunch.
THOUGH I have to say it is absolutely disgusting what many parents feed their kids and the eatting habits of many of my daughter's friends I find sickening. But I suppose, as repulsive as I think it is, that's their choice if they want to pump their kids full of crap.

i used to always go home for lunch during elementary school or my friends would go to mcdonalds but most of the time we'd skip lunch and just play basketball
as for high school we had a world class chef making the craziest shit (like lobster, salmon, crab cakes, filet mignon, etc) so lunch @ school was great but the majority of us still went to McDonalds instead
I don't agree with this though the principal should just issue mandatory Phys Ed classes for the fat kids (whether under a Detention scheme or mandatory extra curricular activity)
but lets be honest the principal probably got paid by Chartwells to impose this rule under a 'health conscious' guise

i love how u guys talk about the families but seriously they school isn't gonna doing much of a great job either with the industrial can crap they by for cheap for price just to cut cost with so much preservatives/crap like that just so they can keep them longer
kids want taste while parents want healthy stuff its not hard to do both, but i bet this is another way for the school to make money of this by letting chartwell in to there schools
edit: i also found out todays kids just stay at home all day either gaming or watch tv or surf the web 95% of the time, just the other day i went to my buds house & he bought a shit load of games for his ps3 but he never touched it & instead of collecting dust his little brother just sits there playing all the games non-stop

I think a lot of us are like WTF because were in canada
In the states a lot of kids in schools eat a ridiculous amount of junk food for lunch and snacks.
I remember watching a documentary where they asked kids what they got for lunch.
Just chips gatorade and candy
This is because candy and pop is so cheap in the states

I've never gone to a school with a cafeteria, but liked the hot lunch program that was run in my middle school.
With obesity out of control like it is down there it's probably a good idea.
