: The Ipad App Thread

OK so I just got an Ipad the other day, in exchange for helping someone admin their website. I noticed that there are a TON of apps out there.. like millions... But most of them are shit. It's kind of hard to go through the app store looking for new ones, because you either come across the same 'featured' ones over and over, or you are presented with random icons with not much info.

So I thought a thread dedicated to ipad app suggestions was in order.

I did find a few that I will keep installed, so I will kick things off:

Atomix Mag - If you are saddened by the loss of EGM, then this is for you. It's a gaming magazine built grounds-up for the ipad. If there is one program that makes you go "yeah, you couldn't have an experience like this without a tablet", then this is the one. It's partially created by the Area 5 guys (former makers of the 1Up Show) and is well presented, and well written. It's not a tabloid style magazine with outdated news stories, but rather an editorial mag about games. Besides Edge Magazine, this is the only other really good gaming mag I know about.

Swords and Sworcery - After hearing about this game, this is the one thing that really made me want an ipad for the first time ever. It is more of an 'artsy' game, but works so, so well. And from what I hear, it only gets better the more you play it. The music and audio presentation is amazing.

AVPlayerHD - used for watching AVI files, since VLC is no longer available on the app store. Works pretty well, but I haven't compared the battery usage to native MP4 files the ipad is made for. Anyone have experience with this?

Geometry Wars - only $0.99 and it is beautiful. Unfortunately it is controlled by 'virtual sticks' so is a bit of a headache to get used to. Not really a good showcase for ipad gaming, but for $1 it's pretty worthwhile.

Later on I am going to try some suggestions people have made for me - Infinity Blade, Dead Space, Civ Rev, Dungeon Hunter...

I'll save my overall thoughts on the ipad for a later time.

Appshopper - app tells you wants new / most popular / reduced price / free in the app store

Layar - Augmented reality browser (only works with 3G iPad 2)

Zite - Personalized magazine (it pulls from different websites)

Skype (iPhone app) - For video chat with skype account - iPad 2 required

NavFree (Canada) - Free GPS Navigation App /w voice turn by turn direction

Update1:

Holographium - Makes hologram text (need camera with long exposures to capture the hologram)

GoodReader - Reads pdf, powerpoints etc..

Dropbox - access to Dropbox cloud service - requires sign up

PlainText - Simple / Minimalist alternative to Apple's Notes App

Clock Pro (HD) - For world clock, sleep timer, stop watch, count down etc..

Jumbo - a simple jumbo calculator

QuakeAware (iPhone app) - this app is a reference manual to help people prepare for an earthquake - has specific emergency numbers for Burnaby, Vancouver and Richmond

I'm going to write an article soon. It has it's plusses and minuses. Main advantage is the app selection

Yup NVM is right, there was no way for me to watch the Canucks game on it, due to no flash.

If you think of it as just a toy, it's not too bad. It's a toy for watching videos and playing games, and social networking, etc. It is surprisingly horrible at browsing websites, due to the small amount of ram on the original model, crappy browser, and lack of flash.

More to come :)

Age of zombies is a fun game

There is a lite version for this. If you like it, it's $2.99

Same developer as fruit ninja.
