Has anyone hardwired a standard radar detector like an escort / valentine to their rear view mirror before?

If so do you leave it up there or do you constantly remove it due to potential break ins?

I hardwired mine above my mirror but I always take it out when I leave the car longer than 5mins. Not worth the risk.

just the same for portable gps navis. take them off the windshield mount and put them away before you park your car for a long time!

Common sense, really. Leaving valuables out of sight decreases the temptationfor crooks to go into your car rather than another one.

Left my GPS to go inside a restaurant for 10 minutes at Lansdowne Mall, and my Del Sol window got smashed.

I even left my doors unlocked too!

I think it really depends on the car and the situation. If you have one of the newer cars where there are tons of sensors around the rear view mirror section, it is hard to make out the radar detector if it is done right.

You have to ask yourself, what are the advantages of you hard wiring the detector besides look. Have you integrated it to the car's electronics? ala Ibus BMWs or Corvettes? I put my detector in front of the rear view mirror because my displays are on the MID on the car.

If you do hardwire, do make a piece so that it is molded to the stem of the rear view mirror and put a small tap screw to the mirror.. (so that it is "bolted" in place for ICBC purposes).

Yea, i have a mount that connects to the rear view mirror then to the radar detector, from the outside it looks pretty integrated. But it's a real pain to remove it and hide it due to the way it mounts....

I think i might just sell it as i don't really use it much these days anyways... When i first got it, i decided to hardmount it cause i thought it would be stealth enough to not cause breakins

I always remove mine as it decreases a thief's temptation to loot it. Honestly, I feel like selling mine as I don't even speed anymore. I'm mostly using it to monitor my car's Voltage, but thats not really worth the hassle of mounting and dismounting everytime.. I'll probably sell it sooner or later. Last time I got my car broken into, they took my mp3 player and BT headset, but left behind the more expensive GPS and V1. Definitely not complaining as it cost me $150 instead of $700, but seriously, wtf?

They stole my X50 last year. It was hardwired and hidden, but they found it along with $4 in change.

With the new laws, I won't run without a detector anymore. Problem is, the thieves like them too.

Always take valuables out of view. Just think of it this way..... it only takes like 5 seconds to smash a window and snatch your $500 radar detector. So you lose your $500 detector + you pay $300 deductible + you buy a new detector. Is 10-20 seconds of inconvenience worth potentially $1300+?

You can still hardwire your detector, but just unplug it and leave it in glove box or trunk to be safe.

I've dealt with tons of people that have their cars broken into because of the GPS and/or detector.

My gf's car got smashed once because one of her idiot friends left an empty iphone CASE box on the floor. It had a picture of an iphone on it and I assume the thief thought it was an iphone. They ended up stealing my fucking beach towel which was in the trunk. Fuckers.

I once left sunglasses exposed in my ex's cupholder in her civic. We were gone maybe 20 mins and lone and behold someone smashed into it and stole the glasses. They didn't even go through the car. Just grabbed my glasses and ran. I figured no one could tell if they were expensive or cheap glasses, so who would break in.

Do not underestimate the fucking crackheads and the bored kids. They'll steal anything.
