| How to get a job at a bank?
I just finished my first year of university (UBC) and was wondering if you guys have any advice on applying for a bank (RBC, TD, etc). I know the pay isn't the greatest but I just want to have some experience handling with money by being a teller or something.
Thanks a lot!
PS: I have a pretty strong resume with lots of teamwork and leadership.

Apply on CIBC's website.
They send you an email everytime, telling you what positions are available.
After you finish the application once, it's a quick process for all further positions / branch you want to apply at.

Its good if you have contacts in the place you want to work with that can refer you. Pay is pretty good for a university student about $14 for a CSR.

Bank tellers are always hiring. Just walk in with your resume. At a given busy city block, you will find all major banks. If you dress accordingly, the manager often comes out and chat with you. Posted via RS Mobile | |

If you have connections with the higher ups it should get you in pretty easily. Otherwise apply at a lot of branches. Posted via RS Mobile | |

Being a teller isn't so much about teamwork, leadership, or handling money. You're out there to recognize and capitalize on opportunities to sell other products (investments and loans). If you can sell and can communicate that to a potential employer, then you shouldn't have too much trouble.

tellers have sales targets they have to meet too... i thought it was weird when i was told i'd have to meet certain targets per year.
an example of recognizing and capitalizing on an opportunity to sell a product would be seeing a fairly large balance on their account thats just been sitting there, and offering the customer other higher interest alternatives to put the money in.

It helps if you know the people at the bank you go to regularly. I went and talked to my branch manager about career opportunities and he was nice enough to look up opportunities that fit my education and interests and got me a job at one of the offices for the bank.
Give it a shot you got nothing to lose, if I never went to talk to him I'd still be doing a bunk ass job.

desired salary - i suggest looking for similar position from other companies and put in an average range
willingness to travel - really up to you, but i guess if you put 100% it makes you seem more flexible but may turn around to bite you if you don't really like to travel and you just put down 100% for the sake of making your app more appealing to the employer

Yeah it's all about connections, my friend is straight out of high school (first year sauder) and is working as a teller because his mom works at the bank.

I just got recently hired at TD. Here's what I did:
-One morning, I printed 6 resumes and 6 cover letters (all tailored to the designated branch)
-I dressed up in a suit and tie and went to each branch
-I went to the reception desk and told them my name with a big smile and asked if I could speak with the customer service manager
-Once the receptionist agreed, I was told to sit down and wait for the manager to come out
-Once you notice a manager walking towards me, I stand up immediately and walk towards them with a big smile and good posture - give them a firm handshake with eye contact
-I then tell them my name; tell them that I wanted to personally drop off my resume and cover letter to you and would love to sit down and chat and tell you a bit more about myself
-- I dropped it off on Monday and on Tuesday, 1/6 of the branches called me immediately and asked if I could come in for a formal interview -- and it dondies.

is it true that you have to work full time for 6 months first?? I was hoping to work full time in august and work part time in september and on because of school.

Getting a job at banks is all about connections. I know about 5 people who work at the same TD branch and one of them first got the job through a connection. The other 4 used that person as a connection and know work together. Not surprisingly, they are all friends.

To increase your chances of getting a bank job, i say you have to try to distinguish yourself from other candidates after the same position. Managers who conduct face to face interviews hear the same generic answers over and over again. People say they have this and that skill or etc. These typical answers likely won't leave a lasting impression on the interviewer.
During these times, positions are limited and employers want potential candidates who are a good fit and who want to grow within the company. This is what the branch manager told me after he interviewed me.
This is just my 2cents. No argument intended

you should first ask yourself, what your objective in working at a bank is, then find out if working at a bank will help you reach that objective in an efficient way.

Dont apply online, i applied for three seperate banks and they all rejected me 1 month later... 
always go in and talk to the manager

How in the world is $14 pretty good for a university student? That works out to be $11-12 ish after tax. Pretty good for a university student = $18-24 per hour. Pretty good for a university graduate is $25+
Are you looking for on it as this scale?
Pretty good = $14
Good = $12
Fair = $10
Bad = $9
Poor = $8
