Don't go near the letter carrier then. They have no controls for that whatsoever.

TLC And p2p in point roberts operate the same way. they just use your name. Is there a more secure place?

TSB shipping in Pt Roberts checked my ID maybe twice, and those were for relatively bigger items. Other than that... nothing

Not sure i want to use Hagens after hearing this.
I also already on the fence after I went down one day a couple hours too early before they release packages that arrive the same day (didn't know of this and went down as soon as i got the delivery email since it was last part i was waiting for to get my project car started). The two desk clerks refused to even check if it had even been sorted yet, despite them just standing around talking since no other customers were in sight and me offering to pay extra so I wouldn't have to waste time in the border line up later on in the day.
Although I am at fault for going too early, I was not impressed by lack of little effort it would have taken to solve the situation.

I've had lots of good experience with TSB in Point Roberts but lots of bad experiences at that crossing. With the major border crossings, truck crossing or Peace Arch they usually just wave you most times don't even charge you duty. Point Roberts on the other hand I've never not had my vehicle searched or have it take less then 30 minutes even if I'm the only one in there.

Just my personal experience but I'll never use Point Roberts again.

TSB's security = "I'm picking up for XX", "Are you XX?", "Yes", "Ok"
This literally happened to me last week. at least to the guy that looks like fluffeetalks on youtube

I have to leave my middle initials with both hagens and tsb because there is someone with the same first name,

This is just a warning to those who currently have an account with Hagen's, or is planning on using them to receive packages from the USA. I went to pick a package up today only to find out someone else already took it. After a while, they believe that someone else with a very similar name picked my package up. They didn't confirm his identity with ID or account information, so he was able to walk out with my package. Hagen's assumes that no one else will know your account number, so they simply go by your name when you pick up your package. By doing so, they've undermined the security and the whole point of having an account system for customers.

This is my first bad experience, but it only takes one in a situation like this for someone to switch to a different company. Which other receiving companies do you guys use that have better controls?

Not sure i want to use Hagens after hearing this.

That sucks but finding an alternate shipping place is pretty hard.

Anyone tried KinekPoint? Or ship2blaine?

I've never had that problem but I'm sure it's a viable one. Somebody must know that you were going to pick up your package and used your name to pick it up. I doubt somebody would know your Hagens ID # unless you gave it out.

Again, I've never had that problem but it's because they recognize me now so I'm sure they wouldnt release any packages unless I called in and let them know a third party was picking up.

its you, not the crossing.

my family cross weekly and pick stuff up, we never get searched. equally we always declare everything, have all documentation ready and rarely pay tax.

I agree, the controls are lacking at these places, but what can you do? really? there is no alternative, and the amount you're saving from buying in the US is significant (plus not paying 12% HST is a bonus - not that i'd have a problem with paying it, but if they're not going to charge, i won't have to pay it)

a 'weird' solution would be to ship it to some really weird name, that no one else could thing of/would have a smiliar name to... but after 8+ years of picking stuff up from Point Bob, i've never had a need to do this

I've never had a bad experience at the border. Maybe because they know me as the lunatic who carried 4 tires over the border by walking. Fuck waiting in a 40 minute line. I didnt pay duties for that either.

edit: for the record, I put 2 tires on each arm and did a t formation, walked from the letter carrier to my car parked at the park before the border on the canada side.

In the past few years, I've been to TSB, The Letter Carrrier, Hagen's of Blaine, Mail Boxes International.

They are all in Point Roberts or in Blaine and they all work the same. I think it's possible to ask them to put a note on the account and have them check your ID every time...

+1 Point Roberts.

The last time I went the officer just scanned my passport and let me through, didn't ask any questions at all. On the way back the officer asked me questions about my bike instead of what business I had in Point Roberts. Once in awhile I'll get stopped, have my car searched and pay taxes/duties, but I'm usually in and out in about 15 mins max depending on how busy it is.

I don't know man... i've been searched maybe twice through my 2 years experience at that crossing...

Once was because I couldn't really explain to them what I was bringing over. (It's those squeaky things they put in pets toys)
the other time was purely random. I do hate how pt roberts though, when it rains and they run out of covered stalls (which they only have like 3 to begin with), they get your car all wet and the officers take forever....
But whatever, there's no need to hate on the officers; they are just doing their job.

But other than that, always smooth sailing

TLC security is pretty poor. I shipped something over and was able to track it. I signed up for their e-mail alert, which they go by first and last name. I received an e-mail from them with stating the package was from VS. Package wasn't mine since I checked the tracking and it was still enroute.

The package arrived a day later and I got the confirmation e-mail so obviously some other dude with my name got a package sent around the same time. So I went to pick up my package and they just asked for my name, and the dude was like "package from victoria's secret?"(he was smirking haha) "umm no that's not mine" *oh that's what VS was. And he looked up and found another package which was mine. I could have just as easily asked for both packages, they didn't id me.

A few months later I got another e-mail from them for another package, if you have a common name it probably isn't too safe. Their e-mail alert probably just sends it out to everyone with the same name. :speechless:

I had my gf go pick up my package at Hagens and I was really surprised how she was able to use my name and they gave her my package without her telling them she was my gf or anything. And last week i got an email from them saying my package had arrived when i havent shipped anything there since. turned out that they sent the email to the wrong person.

Hearing op's story i am finding it difficult to go back to them.

I think it is fair to say that almost ALL these establishments have very poor security. Often I bring a photo-ID with me inside Hagen's thinking I will need it but have never used it yet. I'm there almost every week...

In addition, the level of customer service at ALL these places is the same as well. When they are small businesses, they are courteous and helpful. As they expand and become more popular, they become more impersonal and less courteous. Almost none of the businesses have any sense of value for cross-borer customers and their time.

That being said, I have yet to run into a problems with security and have been using Hagen's and The Letter Carrier since 2003. Hagen's ALWAYS asks for my account number rather than my name or phone number but never asks for PHOTO-ID which would be nice. Hagen's will ultimately be responsible for the package mishap and I am sure they will take care of the situation. O.P. needs to keep us informed as the situation progresses or else this thread is useless in my opinion.

It's not about whether or not the business has a flaw in it's system (since they are ALL the same) but rather about how effectively they rectify the situation.

I went to TSB last week and they asked for ID for the first time for me. I asked if it was new policy and she said yes.

If your friends are going to pick up, they will need ID also and proper paperwork/receipts to show what they are supposed to pick.

yea TLC is definately notorious for not asking for ID.... just call them to note your account to ask for ID and maybe add an initial if you have a semi common name...

04-26-2011, 02:54 PM
I think its a common thing for the people to not ask for ID. Yes, it is poor management, but it is a risk when you do these sort of things. Just got to be careful and hope it works out, maybe put a note on the account or add your middle name.

I've used Blaine Enterprises for a few packages with out a problem (1 block from Hagen). I've had them give me a package that wasn't even mine! It was an alpine deck for a Mini cooper. I gave the package back, but it taught me a lesson. Never assume your name special. For all my packages, i put a note on the package and include my middle name.

My couple pennies...

I've been using The Letter Carrier for about ten years, and have probably gone there almost a hundred times, and I've never been checked for ID even once. When they implemented the system of sending emails when a package arrives in your name, they never even considered it might be a problem that more than one person will have the same name. So now they have a little list on the wall that shows names that there are multiple people for.

However, I've got to say I've been fortunate so far... I've never had any packages lost or picked up by someone else yet. There was one time a couple years ago during the busy Christmas season where they couldn't find a couple of my packages, and made me come back again another day before finding them... but that's the worse experience I've had.

I used to get searched fairly often coming back across the border at Point Roberts... but in the last two years, they've been very lenient. I think at least the last half dozen times I've come back across with merchandise, they've waved me through without having to go in to pay customs.

TSB never checked my ID of all the 10 times I've been there in the last year. Coincidentally, I've never been taxed before either at that border crossing. (FTW!!)

If you really want security, have a name thats rare. Thats it really. All you can do is make sure no one else will have your name.

I've been using Hagen's for the past 2-3 years. Service was great, however it has taken a tumble and it has since gone downhill. They are a bunch of bozo's now and have no customer loyalty. I've been using TSB in Pt Roberts for close to 10 years now, have not been asked for but also have not had any mishaps. I used to get hassled, searched, and taxed for even $50 worth of goods. That was back when I was younger in a bit more of a punk-kid car. Now, they just wave me through most times even if I bring back $200-300 worth of stuff, sometimes more. I've also heard the Canada Customs at Pt Roberts are more slack now for taxing, similar to the crossing at Blaine. I've been using the Shell in Point Roberts to receive packages for me this year because their hours are way more flexible for me and they hold packages for 30 days.

I used to use Blaine Enterprises in Blaine for more expensive ($200+) because most times the customs at Blaine will waive you through even with around $250/person. Blaine Enterprises have always checked my ID at pick-up. But I rarely go all the way to Blaine now since its further away for me, and the border lineups are more difficult to predict.

My boyfriend bought $600 worth of hockey equipment form Hockey Monkey and shipped it to TLC and someone else took his parcel. TLC had to reimburse him the full amount. Even though they gave him a cheque for the lost parcel, he was annoyed that the items that he bought on sale where no longer in stock anymore =( He then switched to TSB.

If you're a jerk they'll do all that, never lie (or be a very good liar)

My experience is that they're thorough, but never reckless in their searches, might even look under your hood if you have a modded car.

I usually go over with absolutely nothing in my car at all, empty trunk, empty compartments. Saves the hassle, that way the searches take 2 minutes and I'm in and out in 5 minutes often no tax after the search.

Hagen's of Blaine (http://www.hagensofblaine.com/receive-with-us.php)

What's the charge for receiving tires?
Or do they just charge it by weight?

And if they charge it by weight....say I have 4 tires at 30lbs.
Will they charge me 4 X ($5.00 under 44lbs)

Or can I pay the $12.50 (100lbs and up) fee for total of all 4 tires?
