The next generation Nintendo console will be unveiled soon. That's according to a fresh report that says Nintendo is already showing its Wii successor to publishers in preparation for its debut at E3 in June.
Citing multiple unnamed sources, Game Informer is reporting that the next Wii -- if it is a Wii -- will feature, at a minimum, HD, though details on system specs and controls were not uncovered.
"Nintendo is doing this one right," an anonymous source told Game Informer. "[It's] not a gimmick like the Wii."
To that point, Game Informer writes, "We do not have confirmation if this new system will be backward compatible with the Wii or if it will even carry the Wii branding as has often been rumored. It is our understanding that Nintendo is trying to embrace the western gamer and will likely launch a new brand with this console."
Nintendo declined comment on the report but did hint that big news is coming soon when a representative told GI to "stay tuned."
The 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo is set to kick on on June 7 in Los Angeles.

Nintendo's confirmation this morning that they'll be showing their new console at E3 left many unanswered questions, but also raised a note of skepticism. The company's statement on the Wii successor promises "a playable model" of the machine at E3 in June. But would Nintendo just play it on stage and leave attendees to gawk? No. "Playable means playable by everyone," a spokesperson for Nintendo told Kotaku today. Presumably, "everyone" means "everyone who shows up at E3 and maybe waits on a line or schedules an appointment." We'll be there in June, playing it.
Hopefully it's not shitty or another motion sensor type gaming console.

Guarantee it will have a motion sensor and some new tech. I bet 3D.

Meh, I've been kind of done with consoles since this last generation, the ps2 and gamecube were the best, ps3 huge let down.
But as long as they let me play super smash bros with a gamecube controller il be on board.

I'm not surprised about the stats about the DS. Nearly every child owns a DS, it's also very affordable.
But generally the Wii is more oriented to children/cartoony games I think.
I heard reports that it's most likely going to incorporate some sort of touch screen with the controller. The idea behind this is that you will be able to have your "private part" of the screen while being able to enjoy multiplayer games. Think of it as not having your brother screen watch you while playing COD

really? gamecube? I'd easily replace that with the dreamcast.
I also believe console gaming this generation is better than the last. The decreasing split-screen modes, regenerative health and shorter gameplay are some of the shortcomings of the current gen, I'd argue that although there seems to be more quality titles on the market.
PS2 no doubt has the best library of games but PS3 is overall a better package (DVD playback was meh, but blu-ray is huge for me..but i won't exactly call the ps3 a perfect media player anymore).
and really..i think Nintendo was always meant to capture a more general casual gaming crowd...but now that it's going for HD it seems like it wants in on the more serious gaming niche.

When I was younger I spent countless hours playing Golden Eye and SSB with friends on a shitty 20" tube tv lol.
Easily the best times growing up.

have you played on the N64 recently?
some friends and I played some mariokart and super smash awhile ago and the graphis hurt my eyes to play on... it was still pretty fun though.
It's just amazing how the times have changed!

Unlike the other 2 Nintendo makes money on every console it sells.

Unlike the other 2 Nintendo makes money on every console it sells.
They do. Sony and Microsoft take a hit with every console they sell, it's a loss leader that they make up for on the back end with both game sales and now their online network sales.
Nintendo both makes a margin on their consoles but also keeps a huge portion of it's game development in house so they pick up a bigger margin there as well, rather then only getting licensing fees.
I HATE the Wii (though I <3 my DSlite), but Nintendo's been incredibly smart in their business model and in courting the gamers who aren't being served by Microsoft and Sony, leaving those two to fight over the same diminishing pool.

Nintendo's goal have always been more family oriented.
And more affordable. Those two things combined will make it always on top.
And I'm not even a Nintendo fan.
But I don't think I'll ever buy a console again until I have kids maybe.
Which would probably end up being a Nintendo in that case.
I personally like to stick with my PC for gaming.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 IMO are the most underrated games of this gen, if people can just put their pride away and go back to their childhood, seriously i can never outgrow Nintendo, their games has always been about quality
say what you want about the Wii, but there is sooo many gems in that console that people just overlook it because their too busy playing COD.. im waiting for The Last Story to have a NA release..
They better make a crazy super mario game .. None of that gimmick mario galaxy crap

Mario Galaxy is probably one of the best games made in the last 10 years, along with Portal and Half Life 2. You guys are insane.
Unfortunately, it's also one of the only 3 to 5 games that are worth playing on the Wii.
But Nintendo is refocusing with the Wii successor, to get better 3rd party support. Expect it to be about as powerful as a 360/PS3, so multiplatform games can easily be ported (right now, if they want to make a Call of Duty or Dead Space game for Wii, they have to make a whole new game for it). There's no need to make it any more powerful, since the other consoles are going to be around for a while. And when the next generation does start, it will be much easier to just tone down the graphics to port to the current gen.
The main rumor for the new Wii is that each controller will have its own touch screen, so it'll be kind of like having a DS experience on console. They are saying 5" screen, but that seems pretty out there...

^ bad management by Sega, and they lost faith, they assumed that when PS2, GC and Xbox come out they would get crush, releasing a hardware 2 years ahead of competition can have setbacks, as DC would not be as capable as the latter 3 in terms of performance and graphics...
plus it had no support from EA (same reason as Saturn also because of Sega's mismanagement)

I think a big selling point is they have to find a way to make the console reverse compatible with Wii games on the new console.

I agree, I thought Mario Galaxy was a great game but I never got attached to it like I did to Super Mario 64. Maybe because I didn't spend countless hours getting all the additional stars and extras, like I did with Mario 64 in my teen years.
Maybe it's because I'm a bit of a late comer to the Wii system, I only bought it just over a year ago because I got it free with my Visa points, and it was the only system with games my Wife was willing to play.
My little sister bought me the new Goldeneye for Christmas. I literally played through the first level, put it on my shelf and haven't played it again since. The Wiimote and Nunchuck just cannot replace a mouse and WASD.

Ocarina of Time is being remade for the 3ds and its suppose to be release in the summer?
the changes is very subtle, just better textures and added polygon count, you can hardly tell the difference unless you look at screenshots from n64 side by side

that piano score seriously brings back memories of those weeknights trying to finish the game while i was supposed to be doing my hw in high school

I was a kid who grew up playing console games during the n64 and ps1 era. Ive spent countless hours playing super mario 64 because of it was like you were in another "world". There were so many different portraits you could jump into and each portrait had its objectives in different parts of the portrait. Shit was insane... From different stages like the desert / haunted house / bowser worlds / sunken ship / snow mountain / lava worlds etc. Every stage was unique, and you would have to go to all the different stages in order to get 120 stars. It was also a bit difficult at times, took effort to collect certain stars especially if you didnt have a guide book and since the internet was not as popular as it is now.
Super mario galaxy was a huge letdown because i was expecting the same epicness from super mario 64. I was expecting a "galaxy" and all i got was an easy game where you had to go through fucking obstacles that were designed to make use of the stupid nanchuk system. I felt like i was playing a game designed for kids and older adults whove never gamed before. It would be fun in a one-time-play sense. I beat the game and never looked at it again.
I hope nintendo will try to steer clear of introducing new gimmicks, and concentrate more on the content and gameplay like their consoles pre-wii. I doubt any "gamer" would choose wii as their main platform to game.
