Any one else pick one of these up?

with rising gas prices and a baby on the way, I figured getting something with 4 doors and great fuel economy was the way to go. when I found out that some american car had all that AND a turbo, I was intrigued.

weeks later I had one of the three 1.4 turbo six speed manuals in vancouver brought up!

traded in the Genesis for her and am slowly getting used to a FWD car with 3 overdrives.

pics!

I got the ECO model, which trades an automatic transmission for over 50 weight saving changes to the entire car worth about 220Lbs, front grille shutter, 17" super light rims, low rolling resistance tires and under body paneling for better wind resistance.

driving impressions so far:
Not as tossable around corners as the Genesis was, but still pretty capable when pushed. Great throttle response with minimal lag in 1-3 gears, 4-6 being highway only equaling insane fuel economy. 1,2,3 shifts feel very similar to the genesis, but it runs out of steam pretty quick. 138hp 149tq in a 3000lB chassis. The low rolling resistance tires and aerodynamics are weird, once moving on level ground, almost no gas is needed to move the vehicle.

I have managed to get 7.5L/100 city and 5.5l/100 on the highway, which while worse than advertised, is about half what my genesis used.

Interior is much nicer than any GM I've been in for less than $40k, and with my line of work, I've been in a lot of GM products. very quiet ride, decent stereo, huge trunk and very drivable.

overall, I think i'm gonna get used to this american 4 door

but nevermind, back on topic about the cruze.

Keep me (or us) updated on how you like the car after a couple months. My two door isn't very kid friendly, and my girlfriend's car is... well, it's a Sunfire. 'Nuff said. I've been tempted to pick up a Cruze, but was wanting to hear some real life reviews from people who have owned them for a few months before deciding anything.

It's a practical car and the 6 speed/turbo and potential for upgrades are nice to have.

sounds like the gear ratios suck a lot of the fun out of it. I would also imagine the low rolling resistance tires arent the greatest grip wise.

Still its the only car in its class with a turbo, and 138/148 and 40+MPG is pretty damn good for 1.4L engine.

as for the focus, I actually looked at the fiesta first, but ford wasn't willing to work with me on the finance end of things.

I got into the cruze worth 4k more than the fiesta I was looking at with no problems at GM for their advertised rate with no money down. Ford wanted either 3600 down, co signer or 4% higher interest rate over an extra year :S
so the Focus would have been out of the picture even if I liked it.

go GM for the financing division anyways.

the 6.5L i posted was just my average, but the sea to sky highway has hills, and I live at the top of a large hill (think royal oak then give it switch backs) plus I drive harder than your average bear. the actual posted numbers for this car are 4.6L/100 highway. which is about what i got once I hit west van, and again from the tunnel all the way out to surrey

This car has the most airbags I have ever seen on a car. Chevy had the Cruze on display in Whistler over the long weekend with the airbags deployed. I couldn't even see the inside of the car with all those pillows in the way.

small update, filled up the gas tank last night in squamish and drove to whistler for dinner. drove back and watched the L/100 average drop to a nice 5.8 from chevron-chevron

that's just over $6 to whistler and back :D

The Cruze is much roomier and safer than a shitbox 318i (there, I said it)

For those calling the Cruze an appliance, WTF did you think this was? A fake-luxury sports car? The Cruze will walk all over an Sentra, Corolla and even the Civic in terms of fit and finish, seating comfort (I was surprised by how comfy the seats are on the base 1.8 Cruze), and fuel economy.

Did you consider the new Focus as well?

I'm thinking of getting rid of my Impreza and Mazda 6 for a Cruze hatchback (when it comes out) or a Focus SEL hatchback.

I was driving behind a new cruze yesterday and noticed the crazy watts link hanging off the rear suspension. I've never seen that on a torsion beam before. Apparently the UK cruzes don't get it.

I drove one from the dealership but I find it to be a marketing hoax.

the extremely unlikely good fuel economy they always advertise everywhere is for the HWY. Of course you are going to get good fuel economy when the last 3 gears are faster than 1:1.

Now factor in the fact that you are in Vancouver and you are not very likely to reach highway speeds and stay there, I'd get around in my CVT shifted Cube and be laughing at the pump.

I have a lot of room in the back for the baby, or even for making babies too. :fullofwin:

If automatics are your thing, go nuts on the elantra.

the ECO has over 50 changes made including thinner seam welds in non critical places to acheive the 220Lb drop over the base turbo model. Not just an option to add on, although you could add some of the options for a lot of money i suppose.

I got it because it was the only manual trans 1.4turbo available

hk2000, what type of mileage are you getting in your cube? I'm getting 8.5L/100km in city and 10.0L/100km on hwy, going about 120-140km/h (across the border)

Im interested in getting this because of the 5 start crash rate and the 10 airbags. My wife is 5 months pregnant and we need to upgrade her 98 honda accord v6. Plus with the 6 months no payments and 0% financing right now its a pretty sweet deal.

I was never a fan of domestic cars. But the cruze is a really nice car. I would buy one over a corolla or civic any day. I dont know if it's just me but Japanese cars are just lacking in this price segment.

oh yea, this thread.

I'm at about 11k kms and still loving it. no problems yet, I average about 7L/100 around town (but I have a huge hill to deal with) I get under 6L/100 on the sea to sky and closer to 5/100 once I hit burnaby.

with the baby in her reverse mounted seat there is very little room up front, only complaint!

^You couldn't even fit one in the back of the new Focus. They totally messed up the interior space on that car.

The Elantra looks awesome on paper, but try taking one out for a spin. Hyundai put out a mini-test drive event awhile back (a mini circuit in the mall parking.) I test drove the new Elantra (auto), Accent (manual), and the 1.6i NA Veloster (manual). The clutch was really hard to modulate, the brakes have very little feedback, and the shifter is terrible. The engine wasn't very eager to rev. I am sure people who are shopping in this class can careless. If you want a solid A-B car, I would take the new Corolla over the Elantra. The Corolla may have a 10 yr old engine, but they've refined it even more for 2012, and the extra thick glass all-around helps with noise isolation.

I was really amazed by the driving dynamics and NVH of the Cruze LT. The Cruze matches my MK6 Golf for interior refinement and noise isolation (the quiestest in the class when it came out), and I honestly think the Cruze has a better ride/handling characteristic than the Golf.
