Travelling to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, etc) - Vaccines and questions

Hey

This year I am planning on vacactioning in SE Asia for a few months, and was wondering about the vaccines I would need to get before leaving. I have heard mixed reviews regarding Typhoid and such, and was wondering if you guys (since some of you have gone), had any insight or experience.

Also any travel tips would be boss.

Thanks

It sucks we don't have doctor's in canada that can tell you this type of things, then prescribe them to you so you can go to the pharmacy to get them done.

Or for that matter even a forum dedicated to vacations and world travel where a question like this could be posted in.

If mods can do it, we should all be able to do it!

Just hit up your doctor they should be able to let you know exactly what you need. Probably Hep A is something to consider and you should take it couple of months earlier.

I just got my shots for my upcoming Asia trip from Travel Medicine and Vaccination Centre.

http://www.tmvc.com/

One of my coworkers who has been to over 40 Countries suggested it and my experience was good. They are up to date with Travel Information to all countries and you can also get your Hep A B etc shots updated there as well. Of course these would be covered by MSP so no charge for those. It is definitely more costly then going to your doctor but it's worth it. There's also a $10 off coupon on the website for the initial consultation which is $45, $35 after coupon. They also have plenty of location to suite your needs. Highly recommended.

THIS. Most/many of the vaccinations are not covered by basic health, but it's ... your health.

mostly the hep shots. Ive been there 6 times. didnt need any shots except for the first time. rmbr to bring "OFF" to spray urself so mosquitoes dont bite you much... unless you could careless about them. also bring your own tissue (bathroom).. some places don't have it or make you pay.. depends where you go.

I hit up SE Asia in 2007. Not sure if anything has changed since but this is what I got.

Hep A (1 shot, 2 for 10 years), Hep B (1 shot, 3 for life), and I think MMR (measles mumps rubella?)

If you're going to Laos, you will need malaria pills. I used Malarone ($5 a pill ). Quinine is cheaper but supposedly it can be hallucinogenic.

Dukoral if you want to reduce your chances of diarrhea after eating bad food. This totally did not work for me.

There's a travel clinic on Burrard downtown (1144 or was it 1160 is the address) I went to that specializes in this area.

Make sure you don't get scammed in buying the Dukoral if you don't think it suits you. It only works up to 20% meaning if your a person who tends to have a stronger stomach then it might not be as cost effective for you. It doesn't exactly just cost a few dollars so up to you. But if your just simply a better safe then sorry type and want to load up on everything that can help at least a bit then by all means go for it.

I used Dukoral and never got sick at all, in those countries. Dukoral is only good for 3 months anyway.

On the 4th month I got sick once, in Hong Kong. I honestly think that Bangkok has better sanitiary practices than Hong Kong.

Nothing beats Singapore though..

Best thing for mosquito bites is White flower oil.. Rub it all over and it just numbs the hell out of the bites but repels any new ones.. So soothing plus it leaves a very cool feeling so you dont feel to hot either.

Bring ibuprofen... like a whole bottle. I dunno how you are with a lot of walking but your feet will probably swell after a few days. Take the ibuprofen daily... like 3 a day, helps with the inflammation. I think the humidity makes it the swelling worse too... I have no problems in NYC, Vegas, California, etc... but in Orlando and Waikiki, I was having problems. China was the worst, walking around 12+ hours a day for 2 weeks...

thanks for the advice everyone

i'm hitting up laos, thailand, vietnam, cambodia, and hk at the end.

my physician told me to go to the travel clinic, he wouldn't prescribe anything to me because he didn't specialize in that. I know a shit-tonne of you people have traveled there, so I thought I'd brush up on information prior to going to the travel clinic so they don't give me a run for my money. I'm glad I posted this thread.

Do the malaria pills have an expiry date? And are there specific pills to some areas only? Because I have friends who went to SE asia who didn't use their malaria pills who are willing to give them to me, but I don't know if they are specific in any way.

Most people I know don't get the typhoid shot, is this a crucial vaccination?

And yes, I will be getting the Dukoral, and I'll be packing immodium....anything to prevent/lessen the amount of diarrhea will be helpful.

Try researching yourself without expecting everyone to hand you answers on a silver platter.. it's not so hard.

Listen to your doc and go to the travel clinic because they will prescribe you antimalarials based on the resistance patterns in specific regions. You usually don't need dukoral if you follow simple rules: peel it, boil it, cook it or forget it.

Let me know if you have any questions about Thailand, Ive been there a few times.. If you going with a lady friend I know some good shops she will love...

Dont forget to bring tums or rolaids.. I usually find if I eat to much greasy or spicy food my stomach needs a coating.

Real men don't take shots, only shots of patron.

On a serious note, take a good supply Imodium. You will get the runs eventually so be prepared. Most people will get runs when they get back as well and be extra careful eating meat and fresh veggies/fruits. And I wasn't joking about patron...alcohol in general kills bacteria and keeps your system on track. I rarely drink but when I travel to Asia I usually have a drink or two every night so my stomach doesn't get upset.
