Anyone else starting to notice these bumps and ruts at major intersections? They didnt used to be as bad. Are they using cheaper/crappier materials or what? These things could be very dangerous in emergency situations.

I routinely ride north/south on Rupert. There are a couple cracks along the right edge in the 20-something streets. Every time I'm on Rupert and I hit Kingsway I cringe. It's very very bumpy. I can't even hit it at 45km/h or it feels like I'll get thrown off my bike. The surface there isn't cracked, but has just reshaped itself due to bus and truck weight.

Or just normal weight vehicles stopping. I'm noticing more and more of this.

Nainamo definitely needs to completely repaved after all those temp patches.

KingEdward is so much better...

+1

That intersection is horrendeous and I catch air time every time I drive over those bumps at anything greater than 5km/hr

They repaved a big section of Kingsway between Metrotown and Boundary... but I agree with everybody here I literally SHIVER/CRINGE at the thought of driving Kingsway and will often drive GREAT distances to avoid it..... eventhough it's direct for me and I live just off of it between Metrotown and Highgate... the Rupert/Kingsway intersection is a total DISASTER... even in a non-lowered car.

yea. the city's cheapin out and just patching little by little. they patch it up and as cars/truck drives over the patch, it kinda lifts up bit by bit and you have your hole again. hmm.... maybe it's the city workers doing a shit job, so there will be work for them to do. fuck, i hate city workers. 3 guys watching/supervising 1 guy working. ..

Nainamo definitely needs to completely repaved after all those temp patches.

It will be by the summer. If you want more information, take a peek at Project 4684 (http://vancouver.ca/communitypages_wa/index.cfm?fuseaction=PRJ.projectdetails&selProjectID=4684).

Please see below, an excerpt from one of the project coordinators on behalf of the City's Engineering department.

Hello bcrdukes,

This project is part of our Capital Road Maintenance Program in which the main objective is to extend the life of the existing roadway structure by grinding and re-surfacing the top two inches of the pavement. Also, since pedestrians are the City's top priority and accessiblity on Nanaimo was identified as a area that needed improvement, many of the corner ramps and sections of sidewalk are being reconstructed.

The entire roadway between Grandview Hwy and Kingsway will be re-surfaced this Summer, once all the concrete work is complete. The project budget for the paving and sidewalk work is $1.7 million.

If have any other questions regarding this project, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Vince

Yup, I've unintentionally spun up the tire in the rain at that intersection due to the bumps.

Job security. If they did a proper job, they wouldn't have to patch it up every year.
