I was just on Garden City and Cambie. The lights within a 3-4 block radius are all gone. Most drivers are following the four way stop procedure. Cars are parked all over the street making Garden City from two lane to one lane only. I don't recommend going there unless you really want to check out the fire, but even then, your view isn't that great because the area is blocked off.

It’s karma. The building on fire right now is the first 6-storey wood-framed building of its kind to be built in BC and created lots of controversy about the construction of it. Fire Departments had warned about it not being fire safe. And now look what has happened. I dont know why construction was carried out if it didnt follow fire safety regulations

just unsafe if it ever catches on fire. Cause it will most likely burn down like this then. Maybe it's a good thing it caught on fire before tenants moved in.

I'm already believing this is arson from somebody that obviously didn't like this project.
how else does a building just catch on fire with no one living in it... it's not even a completed building..

Well to be honest, I don't think many people have actually seen a fire that massive in real life.
The closest thing I saw was some crazy party where drunk people got out of control and set a couch on fire in their front lawn.
And that looked pretty massive already. I can't imagine a whole condo on fire...

Not sure what phase its in but if it's in the drywall stage I could see at least a chance of it happening. Lots of times they use large industrial propane heaters to help the drying process and they'll run them at night when nobody is in the building. I don't know the building or what phase it was in but it could happen. Then again it could be arson or some other cause as well, we'll probably find out.

The type of heater I'm talking about.

Its mainly because the ashes from the fire from the huge smoke cloud fell on the rooftops and started setting them on fire. Theyre like checking everyone's roofs for ashes. My friend sent me pics of chunks of ashes falling in front of her house the size of this:

Vancouver Sun:
The development, "The Remy," at 9388 Cambie, was to be a 188-unit condo development that would include varied affordable-housing options.

Ground was broken in June of 2010, and Premier Gordon Campbell was on hand to mark the occasion; taking advantage of building-code changes introduced in 2009, The Remy was to be one of the first developments in B.C. to go more than four storeys high using wood, rather than concrete.

But in 2009, according to news reports, Richmond Fire Rescue warned the taller wood buildings could be a fire hazard, as the city's ladder trucks could only reach 18 metres — around 12 metres short of a six-storey building.

Speaking to the Richmond Review in 2010, Campbell noted that the building-code changes came with new fire safety standards, including a requirement for sprinklers that extended to balconies.

"This is done up to the most modern standards... It's safe and secure housing for everyone," he said.

Built by Oris Developments, The Remy was expected to be completed by December.

It’s karma. The building on fire right now is the first 6-storey wood-framed building of its kind to be built in BC and created lots of controversy about the construction of it. Fire Departments had warned about it not being fire safe. And now look what has happened. I dont know why construction was carried out if it didnt follow fire safety regulations

They company building the units would have contractors insurance which will cover the damage done to the building.

i live on cambie and see that condo unit all the time.
it started like 3-4 years ago when the project sign went up. it said condos starting at 140k.
recession hits, the condo doesnt get developed. the lot sits there for like 2 years untouched.
mid-late last year, construction finally started.. wasnt the fastest but shit was finally getting done. the price on the sign increases to 190k
theres another planned condo unit right next door that had the project sign up around the same time. still no construction done to that one after 3 years.
something seems a bit fishy. the project obviously wasnt going too well

Wow, this one sucks.

A co-worker purchased a unit in the buildingand is not a happy camper today. Apparently any insurance payout won't happen in the next two months, and she won't get her deposit back until December. Unless of course the developer plays nice and returns the deposit.

blkgsr
05-04-2011, 12:35 PM
ha good luck, they won't return anything until they absolutely have to, and even then they won't pay out until insurance pays them

as for all you ididots saying this fire was because it's a 6 storey building vs the previsous max 5 storey, it wouldn't have made any friggen difference

if a wood building is gonna burn during construction, it's gonna buy, it will just take them longer to put it out

obviously the sprinkler system wasn't installed and opterational yet, looks like they were just near the finishing stages of framing

doubt it was a heater as they wouldn't have needed one yet

i call arson

They're planning on rebuilding:

News1130 Staff May 04, 2011 12:56:54 PM
RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - The developer of a Richmond wood-frame development which went up in flames last night says they will rebuild.

The rubble at Cambie and Garden City Roads was still smoking this morning.

Dana Westermark with Oris Development says he doesn't know how long it will take to rebuild the complex at Cambie and Garden City Road. "There were 33 seniors units, 48 market-affordable units... they were rentals, and 107 market units."

Ted Townsend with the City of Richmond says it wasn't just housing that was lost. "In addition to a significant amount of social housing that was included in this project, there was also a very large child care facility. The City has established a district energy utility in that neighbourhood."

Westermark says the Richmond Fire Department did have concerns about six-storey wood-frame buildings in general but they spent a lot of time making sure their complex was as safe.

Crews are expected to be there for the next several hours

Well the only reason why the construction burned down like that was that there were no fire precautions built inside yet, such as sprinklers, etc.

They are definitely gna rebuild the Remy

The insurance company determined it was those industrial heaters that set it on fire so it was negligence. This came from the investigator sent by manual life.

Oh snap!
