The Bang-Bang Club was a name primarily associated with four photographers active within the townships of South Africa during the Apartheid period, particularly between 1990 and 1994, from when Nelson Mandela was released from jail to the 1994 elections. Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and Joćo Silva were the four associated with the name, although a number of photographers and photojournalists worked alongside them (such as James Nachtwey and Gary Bernard). A movie about the group, directed by Steven Silver and starring Taylor Kitsch, Ryan Phillippe and Malin Åkerman, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.

I had an opportunity to meet Vancouver born photojournalist Ed Ou yesterday, and thought immediately of the Bang Bang Club. This guy is amazing - he was one of the first photojournalists to get inside Egypt for the big protests, and was the first photojournalist in Libya for the anti-Khadafi protests. He talked about escaping from Somalia to Yemen in the boat of human traffickers, getting caught by the Yemeni coast guard and spending 5 days in prison before the New York Times could get him out via diplomatic channels. He throws himself into areas of active armed conflict and comes back with amazing images - he has huge brass balls hanging from between his legs. I'm sure he can become a member of Magnum in the future.
Check out his portfolios:

He just had the cover again yesterday:
