Suggestions for current Double-Din DVD/Navigation unit

Suggestions for best current Double-Din DVD with/without Navigation unit (Brand/model) that I can buy... preferably under $1000-1200 (with higher resolution option like wvga able to play many video file formats)

Any one have opinions or suggestions for Clarion NX501 or Pioneer avic-x930bt or something else?

Any would have the option to hook up to 3G/data/bluetooth on cell phone (andriod, iphone, etc) to stream some online videos (ie. youtube, slingplayer, etc?)

Many of these double din units do not seem to have detabchable faceplates or panels... have anyone had issues with theft with these units?

We carry both of those units and they both do a fantastic job in different ways. If you want to see the Pioneer's quality and interface, I have one in my Z so you can check it out.

The new Clarion ones are pretty kickass too. Larger screen and a ton of features. It really comes down to which one YOU prefer.

If comparing the two, how would you rate each in terms of categories, etc:

GPS/Navigation

How fast the deck generally runs going from various options

Sound quality if running of deck power

Sound quality if hooked up to outboard amp

Compatibility of various video file formats/disc formats

QUality of LCD screen

Which of the two would look most "stock" and deter thiefs from breaking into your car to steal them since both do not have a detachable face

Ipod/iphone connectivivity and options/feature set

Multimedia option via 3G/Data/bluetooth when hooked through cellphone, and how well the feature works?

Any other Extra features/options not mentioned

I see that the Clarion allows for GPS/navigation map/software updates online via the USB port... but does the Pioneer also offer the same feature? There doesn't seem to be anything mentioned online

Thanks

I think you'll be happy with either one Arthur. Both are pretty similar in features and quality.

In terms of Navigation, I think the Clarion would better.
15 million POI vs 12 million POI
3D vs 2D navigation

For sound I think the Clarion would be better in terms adding aftermarket amps. Clarion runs 4V preouts vs Pioneers 2V.

Screen is bigger on the Clarion. Not by much though. LOL

Clarion doesnt need a specific ipod cable, it can work with the cable that comes with the ipod. So no need for a $60 propriatory cable.

As for theft, I don't think either one is less prone to theft. They look pretty similar cosmetically when powered off.

Does the Clarion (or any car NAV) have free NAV map upgrades?

Does it support a 6-channel amp? My ride has its OEM small sub and a variety of speakers build in and my understanding is that a head unit replacement of the factory Nav unit will need another amp because the factory amp can no longer be used. A 6-channel jl audio 600/6 has been reported to be compatible with the speakers but that may be too high-end for me. It's a small car and I don't need to win any contests.

Any rec for an associated amp?

You don't need a crazy expensive amplifier to run that system. For instance, we have a PPI 5-channel amplifier (4X100 and 1X400) for a much more reasonable price than the JL and its got lots of clean power too!

Thanks.

Is there some place I can see the Clarion unit in action.

Also, anyone know about the update-ability of the maps? From my hand-held Garmin and OEM Nav unit experience, out-of-date maps degrade the whole NAV usefulness over time.

For some hand-held units (I saw a Garmin at Costco), they are (finally) touting free map upgrades for life. Whereas some OEM car Nav units are hundreds of dollars for a map upgrade--if even available at all.

From what I remember the first years updates were free unless they changed it this year. I've never seen Clarion charge for updates before.

If by 6 channel you mean 5.1....then no. If 6-Channel you mean front/rear/sub preout then yes.

You could easily run a 5 channel amp to get everything running. What kind of car is it?

I'll have a couple units coming in. Just due to the overall cost and popularity of these units we don't display them. I'm not sure if theres any other dealers that demo them. We'll be installing one right when we get it in, you could take a look and play with it. Otherwise that Youtube video gives you a good idea on how it works.

The 2012 units are out now and I am in the market for a double din dvd player. I don't need navi since the wife has a Garman GPS.

I have a JVC AVX33 in my ITR and love it to death.

How good do you think the JVC AV70BT is?

Right now BB USA has it on sale for under $355 usd.

JVC - 50W x 4 MOSFET AppleŽ iPodŽ-/Satellite Radio-Ready In-Dash DVD Deck - KWAV70BT

I am very tempted to give it a try but it is so new and there isn't many reviews on it.

Wow. That's way below my cost. It's a good thing that they offer Canadians a real warranty otherwise we would be in trouble.
Please keep in mind that it's $350.00 plus their tax, plus duty, shipping...

As for the quality, we have one on the board to compare to others in their league at our Burnaby location.

If you're willing to look into other brands, The new Pioneer AVH-P8400BH is a great deck. Friend of mine just popped his in, and it's amazing. Super quick interface with iPod connectivity and bluetooth, higher resolution screen than most double dins, motorized faceplate, and best of all, the faceplate is detachable!

I'm not sure why you would shop outside of Canada AND go to a big box store as well to save a few dollars after all that shipping, duty and brokerage at the border. I think a lot of people here lose sight of local warranty, service and convenience when its not always about $$$.

Shop local, check out the sponsors before buying a deck from a company that is going down faster than a surrey crackwhore on a West Van businessman's willy.

I'm just looking for a deck with good ipod control, I want one that scrolls like you would on your ipod touch. I need to stop by soundsgood again once I get more money.
