I'm going to UBC in September and I want to get a head start on my course selections. I've looked at both the arts one and cap program and I am familiar with the structure of the course. However, I can't decide which one is better. Can anyone give feedback on either of these programs?
Thanks!

Is there a reason why you are considering these programs and not the standard approach? I don't have an answer for you as to which is better, but you should contact a person named Rose Harper. She deals with both programs, and she is super friendly (talkative). She will give you 110% of the info you want to know.

Thanks for the contact rageguy.
I just really like how some aspects of these programs are in smaller groups or classes. The subjects learned in these courses are also very appealing. I feel like I learn more like that. Since both have what I'm looking for, Im having a hard time deciding.

My knowledge is limited to the fact that my cousin, who was in arts one, had to write an paper every week or two weeks

UBC Science has similar programs called Science One and CSP (Coordinated science program). I applied and got offers from both but I ended up going in CSP program.

CSP has workshops (~around 3 hours per week? i forgot) that were related to the first year science courses. And all the people in the CSP program had the same course sections/lectures/tutorials so its easier to make friends in your first year.

From what I knew, Science One was a lot tougher than CSP as it was more interdisciplinary with a higher workload (tutorials, labs, fieldtrips), but the people who did well in it really enjoyed it.

Im guessing Arts One and CAP are similar

I took ArtsOne during my first year in and I really enjoyed it. We wrote essays every 2 weeks but don't let that scare you away. I'm a terrible student and I found it to be completely manageable. In fact, I found my first year to be very relaxing; whereas my friends were all stressing over the usual 5 course workload.

There is one lecture + 2 discussions + 1 tutorial per week. The discussions are engaging and interesting. The tutorials are great for working on your essay. Lectures are large sized, just like any other lecture. I was pretty good at essays to begin with but my writing and analysis improved even more after this course. I am very confident in writing essays for all the courses I have taken since then. You will be reading literature, which is much better than reading textbooks.

I can't give you any information about the other programs but if you have anymore questions on ArtsOne I'd be glad to answer them.

I definitely recommend this program to those who are the artsy-reader/writer type.
