If I can install OSX on it, I'm sold.

In that case it would cost 4 times the regular msrp.

Why would it cost more? It's not like they're installing it for me.

But yes, if Apple actually made something with these specs, it would probably be about $8,999. They already sell hardware from 4 years ago for $1649.

Judging from the naming scheme ASUS uses, it's most likely a 12" laptop. (I didn't watch the video, so excuse me if they mention it there).

I had the UL20 before, and it was an amazing laptop. Best keyboard I had ever used.

i got banned from that reviewers (tnkgirl) site/youtube comments

cuz i thought it was a dude after watching a video and expressed my surprise (because i had always assumed it was a girl)

and when i got banned i thought i really offended the guy so i sent a pm apologizing for having previously assumed he was a girl

turns out the reviewer IS a girl lol (or so it and others say)

Looks suspiciously like the Macbook Air eh!

I wish competitors would innovate a little more instead of trying to one up Apple.

Perhaps I'm jealous, since I have an MBA, and the only reason I got it is because it's the lightest and thinnest laptop out there. I wanted a windows equivalent and FINALLY we get this.. and it looks just like an MBA. ASUS even using the term "Unibody Engineering", same as apple. The only thing they did was maybe it Polished Aluminum instead of the Matte Finish!

Now the question, when will this thing come out! Looks great.

This thing looks to be about the size of the 13" MBA, but it doesn't have an SD card slot like the MBA does. Also, wondering what the capacity of their hard drive is....

Also this thing is slated for a Sept release date, and I'd be surprised if Apple doesn't refresh their MBA lineup by then.

didn't Sony come out with a thin; ultra light laptop too? (not as thin but lighter?)

i cant stand ultra thin devices though, be it computers or phones

not only for the fact that i feel like i'll snap em in two but also for the reason of i can't hold onto them; they seem to slide out of my fingers with ease

That's why it's got the metal casing.

The MBA is nice, while it's light it feels solid in your hand. You should pick one up before you judge it.

If this comes out in september, it'll be interesting to see what apple comes out with. New MBA's are rumored to come out within a month or two with sandy bridge processors as well.

I love ASUS.

My 4 year old F3SV, though large and not very "pretty" has held up my entire undergrad career from start to finish. No hitches (except for the screen, which they replaced under warranty with a turnaround in under a week).

And their price to spec ratio is among the best IMO

Laptops are like cars. You can only have two of fast, cheap and well-built (or good looking depending on who you talk to). Macbook Pros have always had fast hardware and they feel solid.

On the other hand, PC laptops usually have fast hardware on the high end and cost less but they've always been either massive bricks or flimsy. I had a thin Sony prior to buying a MBP and it never felt as solid. The plastic creaked, the keyboard flexed. Plus I spent years working retail, selling $600 laptops to people that didn't know any better.

Admittedly, PC laptops have gotten a lot better in terms of build quality lately, especially those high end HPs. Asus has made some decent things in recent memory. I had one of those super portable 10" ones...not the netbooks.

When Apple used PPC architecture, it could be argued that it allowed Macs to perform graphical tasks more efficiently and quickly than the generic x86 architecture.

With Apple using x86/64 just like any other PC, that argument is over.

Netbooks use cheap, slow hardware so that high school girls can browse Facebook.

Nice design from Asus but it look awfully like the MBA.
The Core i7 in it will probably be the 2 cores 1.7 or 1.8 to keep the heat down

As for Mac vs PC (software + hardware), I don't get why PC users always try to convert Mac users into a PC user. They also, always bash Apple's spec and price whenever they get a chance. It's not like people are using their money to get a Mac, so why so serious?

I would understand if people are shareholders and/or own a tech company that compete with Apple but I just don't get why consumers try to stop people from buying Apple?

And speaking from my experience some people only used Mac for 5 minutes and label it sucks just because the layout is different from Windows.

I find Window is a lot easier to troubleshot (work as a tech support). Vs Mac. It just seems ppl who uses windows have an easier time doing what I ask them to do. Also Mac like to do some werid things.

A common issue with Mac Mail I find is that for the out-going mail server port it likes to change to the delfault port even though the user have put a specific port. not sure why though.

Another issue with MAC Mail is that say you setup several E-mail acctounts and decide to delete one. All E-mails and contacts associate with that E-mail account will get deleted as well. This does not happen to Outlook or other E-mail programs.

Another thing is why does APPLE want to name their router Airport, or TimeCapsule? Just call it a router lol.

Some free AV for Mac:

ClamAV
Sophos

A good idea to scan your files if you bit torrent.

The UNIX kernel was designed with security in mind, but no OS is immune. This means that as Apple is being targeted more, some things will get through, but your advantage is that you have an OS that's naturally more resistant to these attacks.

Even if you don't bit torrent, it's still a good idea to learn about the social engineering tricks those guys are using to gain access to your system and to give your computer a scan once in awhile just to be non-ignorant of what's going on in your system.

That said, the hype with the Mac viruses so far are really overblown.

A lot of people think that but security analysts say OSX is the least secure of the major OS's. There was an article several years ago saying how OSX had 5x the security holes of XP and Vista combined, more recent articles say little has changed. The user base is now big enough for hackers to make it worth their while to hack. Think of the OSX user base as a small town where nobody locks their doors, it just takes a few baddies to rob them blind. At hacking competitions like Pwn to Own, OSX is usually the first to fall.

Airport is basically their brand for their wireless products, encompassing shit like routers, wireless media streaming, Time Capsule (backup), etc. It's like how D-Link calls their shit RangeBoost or Xtreme or whatever. Linksys calls theirs a much more marketable and attractive WRT54G. It's just a brand or a model name.

Apple is about branding-that's it.

It's not just branding. Apple knows that customers want. Most people don't care what hardware a computer has. They just need to know it runs well and lasts long. In terms of build quality apple has really set the standard with their unibody aluminum designs. Slap on the apple brand and an OS that everyone can use and they can price it higher than anyone else. Not trying to praise apple here or anything. In fact, I really hate the apple OS's since a lot of things are so restricted. But they're obviously doing something right for so many people to become loyal to their products.
