http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/06/02/soldier-cited-for-holding-off-up-to-30-taliban-by-himself/

Pun fought off thirty Taliban attackers by himself, firing 400 rounds of machine gun ammunition, detonating 17 grenades, a landmine, and finally beating the last attackers back with the tripod of his gun.

Pun's actions saved the lives of three fellow soldiers at the checkpoint and were the "bravest seen in his battalion over two hard tours in Afghanistan," according to his medal citation.

Pun was not wounded in the firefight.

“That he survived unscathed is simply incredible," his medal citation says. “Throughout Dip’s actions he was under almost constant intense fire. Dip’s courage and gallantry were simply astonishing."

When I was in Nepal I saw a Gurkha training camp for the British Army in the Himalaya's. Let me tell you that while most people probably think of the Nepelease as far from having the best soldiers in the world, from what I witnessed and hearing from all the locals, these Gurkha men are feared. They are paid EXTREMELY well to Nepal standards, as they are paid salaries comparable to those in the British army, which goes a long way in Nepal. They train and fight for the British, but have also had pension issues as well. Some soldiers have felt they risk their lives for another country, and were not receiving comparable pensions as were British Soldiers. I think its a really fascinating scenario.

I just asked my dad if he's ever heard of the Gurkha's since I wanted to tell him about the story.
He's said of course. He said they were legendary and they were feared by a lot of people. He also said they were the queens personal body guards and they were fearless.

"It's astonishing because they are just little guys, but they have no fear". He said there were a lot of them stationed in HK at one point.
He mentioned how sad it was though because he said the queen pretty much shafted them. They wouldn't give them British citizenship or pay them properly, but they still fought honourable and hard.

heres another one from a few months ago in India

A Gorkha Rifles jawan [soldier] travelling on a train did not hesitate to take on a gang of 30 armed dacoits [bandits] singlehandedly, armed with just a khukri, when he saw them looting his fellow passengers

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2010-09-04/kolkata/28270584_1_cash-and-valuables-dacoits-chittaranjan

Although some of the bandits had pistols, they were either fake (a common ploy in India), inoperable, or handled by a man who didn't want to get too close to an angry Gurkha.

These guys are nuts

Such incidents are rare, but not that unusual for Gurkha soldiers. Two months before Shrestha fought the 40 bandits, another Gurkha solider in Afghanistan, found himself facing court martial for doing what Gurkha's are trained to do (beheading an enemy in combat with his khukuri). The trouble began when the accused Gurkha's unit had been sent in pursuit of a group of Taliban believed to contain a local Taliban leader. When the Gurkhas caught up with the Taliban, a gun battle broke out and several of the enemy were killed. The Gurkhas were ordered to retrieve the bodies of the dead Taliban, to see if one of them was the wanted leader. But the Gurkhas were still under heavy fire, and the Gurkha who reached one body realized he could not drag it away without getting shot. Thinking fast, he cut off the dead Taliban's head and scampered away to safety.

Thread title is wrong. It should read, "Meet the Beast Who Held Off 30 Taliban Attackers Alone." Actually, for a Gurkha, it's just another day at the office.

Gurkhas are fearless fighting machines. The British are so fortunate that they are on the same side.
