SAN FRANCISCO, Cali. - Doctors are now claiming they have a "functional" cure for HIV after a 45-year-old man became the first person ever to be cured from the disease.

Timothy Ray Brown tested positive for HIV back in 1995, but became the first person ever to have the virus completely eliminated from his body after a bone marrow transplant in 2007.

He received stem cells from a donor who was immune to HIV. Doctors said that about one percent of all caucasians have an immunity for the disease.

Dr. Jay Levy is one of the doctors who co-discovered the HIV virus, and he explained how this cure is possible.

"If you're able to take the white cells from someone and manipulate them so they're no longer infectable by HIV, and those white cells become the whole immune system of that individual, you've got essentially what we call a functional cure," Levy said.

Brown's procedure may not be applicable to everyone with HIV because you need to find the right donor that is immune to the disease.

But now doctors are trying to see how the transplant worked, and if they can find a more mainstream cure to get rid of the 30-year-old disease.
