Whether you are doing it now, or waiting till it officially open....the 2011 season for the Grouse Grind is about to begin. Something I've been stoked doing for the last few years.
Current Best Times?
New Goal Time?
Frequency?
Tips for the newbs?
Meets?
etc etc etc

Current Best time : 48 Minutes (2 years ago), last season my best time was 55 minutes.
Goal Time: This season id like to get down to 50-53 minutes! (gonna be tough with all the beers ive been drinking for playoffs!! haha)
Frequency: last season i went once a week, this year id like to make it 3 times a week but realistically if i can get up there 2 times a week ill be happy!
Tips for the newbs: dont be one of those idiots in jeans and flip flops holding everyone up. PLEASE.

Current Best Times?
52 minutes with exgf baggage.
New Goal Time?
45mins
Frequency?
Weekly - Sat/Sun mornings when weather persists
Tips for the newbs?
Take it easy, or you'll burn yourself out. Bring a small water bottle and pace your fluid intake...not a giant one.
Meets?
No. You guys will clutter up the trail thus preventing others from getting better times. Go when you can, and go early to avoid tourists casually walking the trails.

Current Best Times?
My best time was 49min, but if I were to do it now it would probably be closer to 60.
New Goal Time?
I'd like to get 45-49min this year
Frequency?
4 times a month, mornings
Tips for the newbs?
take your garbage with you

53~ mins
under 50min.
1 or 2 times a year.
bring botte of water, dress lightly, t-shirt, shorts. I leave my wallet and cell in the car.
Usually at late morning or early afternoon.
I want to try going earlier, when there's less people, and when it's cooler.
I seriously think my time could increase by 2-3 minutes if slow people aren't blocking the way.
I find losing my momentum when I have to wait behind people really effects my energy.
What I personally do is never stop, and keep moving, even if I have to go slow.
I find it easier to maintain momentum to keep going than to take breaks. Take small sips to stay hydrated, but don't gulp down liquid,
or you'll feel bloated.
I only go once or twice a year, so I can't use that line, "It'll get easier as you do it more often"
I think of it simply as the will to compete and set personal records.
There will always be some "pro" that's a lot faster than me and passes me. I try to keep him in my sight to help me keep going.
(I'm not really sure if this is good for everyone's health, but I like to push myself a lot to get a faster time). People I pass... I try to never
see them again. As in, keep them behind me. Which is also why I don't like taking breaks.
I set a goal in my head of what time I expect to get to the top, then I divide it by 4, and I try to hit that time at each 1/4 mark.
Sometimes it totally mindfucks me cause I miss the 1/4 markers, and I don't go often enough to remember the surroundings... lol
The first quarter is relatively flat, and tempting to just dash through, since you're full of energy. Don't run (unless you're very fit),
or you'll be dead tired by the 1/4 mark. Just walk/hike fast. The last quarter will seem like it lasts forever, and it's the steepest.
Some parts have steps so high, I use my hands to help thrust myself up. But I'm so tired by then,
I'm almost crawling/climbing some of those high steps. You'll see sky when you look up, making you think you're at the end,
but there's always a bit more to go. Just grind through it... almost there.
RayBot

????? The first quarter isn't flat....its actually the most difficult quarter. The first 200m is probably flat, but thats about it.
The last quarter.....after its new construction is now the easiest. Not necessarily the level, its still pretty steep, but its now a lot easier to climb.

I'm probably mistakenly remembering it then.
I know the beginning was pretty flat and not that steep. But I guess you're right, maybe just the first bit.
But I still think the first quarter is the easiest, at least for me. Maybe it's because I have the most energy at that time as well.
What did they change in the new construction? I haven't gone since last summer.
RayBot
06-11-2011, 01:25 PM
They made the last quarter a lot more stable....the took away a lot of the looser rock steps and actually changed it to a wooden stairway....
So pretty much....if you aren't too winded to do the last quarter, you can rocket up the last quarter with ease.
Before they built those stairs, my best time was 49m.
Now its 45. Hoping to get down to 43 this year some time.

Went on sunday. Worst time ever 1hr 21mins. Wasn't that busy. Such a scam that grouse wants to be environmentally friendly but make you buy a $3 plastic bottle of water since they took the fountains away. The clean snow was free to eat.

Current Best Times?
42 mins 2 years ago
New Goal Time?
I'd be happy to hit 45 if i'm lucky with the amount of cardio i've done of the year...
Frequency?
This year and last year I havn't gone at all, the previous summer however I went at least 3 times a week with a maximum 5. I had gotten laid off, recently broke up with my ex, and it was a great way to pass the time with a couple friends while staying active in the summer.
Tips for the newbs?
As stated above, don't start out running our jogging. If you can set a steady consistent pace that you can keep up for the entire duration of the trail you're more likely to see better results than heading up a 1/4 as fast as you can and then taking a break or slowing down.
Have any of you guys seen the world records for the grouse grind? It's honestly retarded. I've raced DOWN the grouse grind many times (which I don't recommend as it's horrible on your knees), and my better times going down are the records going up. I honestly can't imagine someone scaling it as quickly as I am heading down.

I've read that both the Sedins can do it around 32mins.
And they have the best time on the team.
So you guys should try to top that. ;)

I had 49 mins on the old old grind trail about 4 years ago.
I'm not to fond of the new trail, it's not as rugged (fun) as it used to be. Although, I know it's "better" for the mass traffic it gets during the summer.
I used to love running that thing on rainy days.

Here's a good site by some guy sharing his experience about the Grind.

Probably not exactly up to date anymore, but, i'm not sure how much could have changed since the reconstruction...

They changed the start.....so much for a flat 200m start that u can somewhat run. It just goes straight to the steps.

Just went up this morning,
Current best: 39:50 end of last year
Today (First run of 2011): 46:30 after a full 8 months of doing jack over winter (minus snowboarding)
This years goal: 35!
Time to get my fitness up, last year i was going 3-5x a week. This year i know 35 is a lofty goal (maybe not since the course has changed) but I'm working full time in LANGLEY of all places and plan to try to go up at least 3x a week.

Went up today, but major fail :D accidentally resetting my watch somewhere in the first quarter. I was up there yesterday, hit a 42:30 so the times coming down, although today I was feeling even better and would guess somewhere in the high to 41s.
My tips for people really serious about dropping their time.
Biking. When I started consistently biking last year (22km to work every other day) my times just dropped. That and learning how to use my diaphragm to help me breath helped as well.

You should be able to hit 40 no problem within the next round or the round after. The first time is always the toughest...now that you know the terrain (somewhat) you should be able to breeze right through it.

If you are a beginner hiker....hiking down is not recommended.

Second time around was a nice casual walk up in 1hr11m and randomly bumped into an old buddy of mine and just climbed up together.

I never take breaks because I look at stopping as a failure, since it technically is just "going up stairs for roughly 5kms".
I realize it is quite strenuous, but that mentality is just for myself as I am quite competitive.
The first time I ever went was 2 years ago (which I went 3 times that summer).
Best time was somewhere in the low 40mins.. Shaved off about 3 mins each time I went. With the 10 bucks to get down now, I have no interest in doing it, and it is one of those things where if you don't get into it, you will never do it.

Not sure about long weekends but if its anything like a normal weekend, its gonna be butt fuck busy. Get ready for ass to face lineups and tons of people who shouldn't even be on there IE grandparents etc etc.
IMO, save yourself the headache and go on Tues instead.
Went Friday night after work and got 59 minutes! First time I've ever hit the under 1 hour mark so I was quite happy with it. I would've gotten an even better time if I didn't take a 'shortcut' near the start. It cut into the woods and when I finally got back onto the main path, I realized I had to double back down cause I'd have to do a huge jump down from there just to get back on the path and didn't want to risk falling. FUUUU!!!
That Jim Beltz guy did it 8 times that day cause I saw his name on the tv screen. EIGHT TIMES
