So... my PSU is only pumping out 10.3V for the +12V in SpeedFan (12.23V in BIOS). Time for an RMA (worth it?) ... and a new PSU.

Silence, and i guess reliability are my main criteria, along with modular cables. I have an i7-860, Zalman CPU cooler, 3 case fans, 2x DVD drives, and 4x HDDs in the case right now (perhaps more later on). I do not game (does SCII count?) much or at all, as I only have a 5450 in there for the HDMI, so that should bring the cost and requirements down.

I am looking at the Corsair HX850 and the Enermax Revolution85+. I probably don't need anything this pricey but the 140mm fans, modular ability, and good reviews interest me. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

edit: CPUID'z PC-Wizard reads it the same as the BIOS. I guess SpeedFan's not playing nice with the sensor. Nonetheless, thanks for the all the suggestions and tips.

850W is overkill...and since efficiency is somewhat positively related to load level I think going for a smaller PSU would be better.

In my experience the Corsair HX PSUs are really quiet.

Seasonic and Silverstone are good too from what I've read.

I've been out of the tech loop for a while so I don't have any specific recommendations.

Corsair AX series or Seasonic X series would currently be the PSU of my choice. They both have lengthy warranties and great build qualities.

I have an older Corsair Modular OEM'd by Seasonic and it's been great.

I was under the impression that in the BIOS, it's not under much load at all, hence the 12.xxV reading. Perhaps I am incorrect. It did show a number closer to 12 previously in SpeedFan. Does the PSU actually have a problem?

I've used quite a few of the Silverstone SST-ST85F-P with all positive results; quiet, reliable, fully modular, and a 140mm fan. Price is about $135 right now ...

i have an Enermax 550W...

i run 5 chassis fans
CPU Heatsink (which has 2 fans)
ATI HD5770
1 DVD drive
5 HDDs (300gb WD Raptor drive, 2x1TB drives, 2x2 320GB)

and my system runs fine and quiet.. the only noise is when my cables touch the fans.. haha.. i need to redo the wires..

also want to dump the 2 320gb and get 2x2 TB drives..


stay away from OCZ, bought 2 of these and they both died after 6months.. this enermax lasted me 1.5years and counting.

I think the only "real" way to test it is if you have a voltmeter...correct me if I'm wrong...

Only situation I can see is if you have multiple PCI-E connections on a single rail, so you can use a volt meter an empty one while the other is connected to a graphics card.

Feel free to correct me if there's another way or if I'm wrong.
