Creepy Abandoned House at Davie and Cardero
Just wondering what the story is with the creepy looking boarded up house at Davie and Cardero near English Bay. Is it a heritage site? Haunted? Claimed by the gov't? It's just been boarded up for a while now, wonder why it's not torn down and replaced with another structure.

Isn't that the old macaroni grill? Heard it used the to be a gentlemans club for old skool politicians..
There's also an underground passage that leads to the brothel across the street ..

here...
First stop on the ghost trail is Romano’s Macaroni Grill, now inhabiting the old Roger’s Sugar Mansion on Davie Street.
The Mansion is alive with history. There are tunnels under the mansion connecting to nearby Balthazar nightclub that were reportedly used for bootlegging and prostitution running during Al Capone’s era.
And according to General Manager Marc Ignacz, rumour has it that Capone himself used to frequent the premises to hang out with his pal B.T. Rogers.
But that’s not the ghost story. The story, as Ignacz tells it, is that one of B.T. Rogers’s sons jumped through a second story window and committed suicide.
“He walks the house once in a while,” says Ignacz. “I have a sous chef… he was working late at night, and said it sounded like someone was there on the front line cooking… with pots, pans… he just left everything,” says Ignacz, recalling how he found the mess the next morning after the cook had fled the building.
There’s more: “We had a painter here throughout the night… and he turned around and saw an old gentleman standing on the banister… and when he asked him what he was looking for, he didn’t respond. When he came down the ladder, the old gentleman was gone.”
Like the cook, the painter then dropped his gear and ran out.

I remember going there as a kid and the table cloths are huge sheets of paper. They give you a bunch a crayons to draw all over the place. Awesome.

It's a great piece of history, if you can imagine that during the early 20th century, Davie St was lined with mansions like this one. Hopefully they restore it soon and use it again.

It's a gorgeous place in a prime area of town. If I had the money, I wouldn't be living on the West End or West Vancouver, I'd be living smack-dab in the middle of downtown. Especially in a house as grand as that one.

I'm crazy enough to go in at night with no flash light. I love shit like that. Being scared is a awesome feeling when you plan for it.
I'm sure they have an alarm installed or something.

This site hasn't been up to much in a long time but they used to specialize in urban exploration in BC with locations like the McBarge, some old ferries, Padova in Kamloops, etc. Unfortunately the site has become as run down as the locations they visited.

On the topic of haunted buildings...Hotel Vancouver is haunted. Here's my story; I was staying at the hotel during the NYE back in 2009 and I'm walking back to my room with my ex-gf and it's like 2am and we hear someone running behind us, we look behind us and it's some kid who must have been like 10 years old hauling ass so we move over to let him pass and he goes right to the end of the hallway and makes a quick left but one big problem...there's no room there, it was just a wall.

I would personally not mind walking through a claimed "haunted house"
I don't believe in that kinda stuff, but I would still be creeped out.
But I am totally up for the challenge of "mythbusting"
I would do it with a small team about 4 people.
The problem though, is that I need everyone to be focused on the same goal, and not trying to do stupid shit like scare the group or troll.
I think most people will fail at that part. And I simply don't trust anyone when it comes to something like this but myself. The opportunity
is just too golden for someone to scare the shit out of the rest of the group, so maybe I can't blame people for being an ass.

Its still exactly the same as far as I know. Fenced in, and empty. Seems a shame to have such a gorgeous building left to rot.
The Macaroni Grill was awesome. They even had opera singers in there walking around and doing Opera singing for tables at a time.

Yeah, why?
Whoever owns it must be eating up a ton of money from property taxes and upkeep.
I'm so curious to know who owns it!

The Keg Restaurant group owns the property and building. I know earlier this year, some group tried to ask the City of Vancouver to get the Keg to turn that building into a public library but don't think that gained much traction with the owners.

How come they haven't opened a Keg location there if they already own it? That's a prime location for dinner, especially during the summer!

No clue, I do recall they announced plans in 2011 to open a restaurant at the location, but those plans seemed to have been scrapped. My only guess is the costs to renovate and upkeep such an old building and not being able to tear it down to build a new structure due to the heritage status.
Here's the article about the library http://m.news1130.com/2013/04/27/new-library-proposed-for-gabriola-mansion/
