Want to live at YVR for 80 days?

YVR is celebrating 80 years of business and has a new "contest" that lets someone live at the airport for 80 days.
To be trapped in an airport for 80 days and 80 nights sounds like a travel nightmare of epic proportions.
But the Vancouver Airport Authority's Live@YVR contest, launched Thursday, adds a sweet twist to the idea of being stranded without a departure ticket.
The airport authority, the independent corporation that manages Vancouver's airport, is seeking a "YVR correspondent" — a video-savvy storyteller who can explore the hidden nooks and crannies that contribute to life and business at YVR and its Sea Island home.
The 80-day "reporting" stint runs from Aug. 17 to Nov. 4 — part of the airport's 80th-anniversary celebration on July 22 — requires the contest winner to use Facebook and Twitter, and post content to liveatYVR.ca at least once a day.
"He or she will uncover stories and share the triumphs — and trials — of living at an airport full time," said Rebecca Catley, airport authority spokeswoman.
If the idea of sleeping in an airport for nearly three months isn't your cup of tea, worry not — the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel has it covered.
For the duration of the contest, the "correspondent" will stay in a room at the Fairmont hotel and will be given $50 in "YVR bucks" to dine or snack at one of the 160 shops, services and restaurants on Sea Island.
The contest will see the winner equipped with camera and editing equipment for producing, reporting and editing stories — and awarded with a $15,000 honorarium at completion.
The catch? The correspondent must not leave Sea Island — the island west of Richmond's city centre that's home to the airport and the 400 businesses associated with its operations — for the duration of the 80-day stint.

I am tempted to try this....I don't know what I would do with my job but this seems like one of those 'once in a lifetime opportunities'
You get to stay in a hotel for free....get paid $15,000....get money to eat....it's for sure win-win....only thing you can't do is leave
good luck to anyone who enters

Is it just me or does $15,000 seem really low as compensation to be stuck at YVR for 80 days, even with free hotel/food.

Such a bs concept.. Like every person who has to wait for a delay has an allowance and free room at the fairmont.
Should do it Terminal movie style and give you a bench.
80 days is a long time. Hope the person doesn't go crazy and end up being tazed

Ideas for the person who wins:
- Daily videos of "airport hotties"
- Bring a vball, name it Wilson, find a secluded part of Sea Island and remake Castaway
- Dress as a polish tourist and fake being tasered at security
- Apply for a job at the airport, make extra cash while you're there!
- Negotiate deals with the airlines to feature them in the videos for access to the private lounges (for the free booze!)
- Rent a car and do laps of Sea Island

-most of the 15k will go towards the shitty overpriced food that needs to be purchased, along with other necessities. $50 a day is a joke.
-you'll gain a shitload of weight and be out of shape
-little interaction with friends and family
-screwed for job
...sounds like something between jail and "survivor". Wouldn't wanna be in either, so not for me lol

Lol, you made a valid point. The whole time we assumed it's $50/day. But, pretty sure it IS.
I'd do it if I didn't have a kid, or a job I didn't care for. Would be awesome to steal a buggy and drive around in it.

I just vacationed for 2 weeks and can say I spent < $50 day easily. $10-15 for most breakfasts with coffee. $10-15 for a sandwich combo at lunch. $20-25 for a nice meal and a beer. and that's if I eat well everyday, sometimes you're just gonna grab a muffin and coffee for breakfast, or a cheap meal at McDs.

With $50/day, you're gonna be broke after 4 or 5 beers. Airport beers ain't cheap.
Just to keep from being bored and moping around, I'd try a bunch of different jobs to pass the time.

Damn if I was in Canada, I'd enter. Here's what you HAVE to do:
Two (2) stories each week;
A minimum of one (1) personal video diary entry each week;
Up to three (3) spontaneous stories (in written and/or video form) each week;
A minimum of one (1) interactive Twitter / Facebook video response each week;
A minimum of four (4) Twitter updates per week;
A minimum of two (2) Facebook updates per week;
A weekly blog for www.LiveatYVR.ca; and
Additional content ongoing.
And the $50 per day is only if you turn down the offer of 3 meals one day.. so if you don't feel like airport food for another meal, you can use your voucher.
I'd definitely do this....

Me too, but that would be rather difficult in the airport, where prices are inflated
But again, the $50 is only necessary if you don't want to eat the provided meals.

Just print a fake boarding pass and use an Airline lounge if you have status with them. Free drinks and food all day with relaxation facilities. If you don't have lounge access, easily obtainable with Priorty Pass which I believe is $400us a year or comes free with many credit cards.
I would just chill in the lounge all day and wander around when wanting too.

The $50 a day is fine, normally you'd have to eat and pay for your food anyway unless your still at home in which case that might not apply. If you look at the 50 bucks as a supplement to cover the inflated meal costs instead of an end all be all to pay for your meals its plenty. Don't forget you're also getting almost $190 a day for being there on top of the per diem. Also what would stop family members and friends from bringing you in the occasional lunch or dinner, groceries, snack foods like energy bars, drinks and stuff like that? I don't know if it's in the rules but if not that would totally make the allowance more then enough. I doubt they are monitoring you're hotel room.
I think the person who does this has to look at it like some sick life experience and not as a job. It's not for everybody probably not for most.

Update:
Jaeger Mah will be stranded for 80 days and 80 nights at the Vancouver International Airport starting Aug. 17.
But he's no cranky traveller. Mah, 29, was announced Monday as the winner of the Live@YVR contest, which was looking for someone to document what happens behind the scenes at the airport.
"I just got my security pass so I can get into all the secret places in the airport," Mah told The Vancouver Sun on Monday afternoon. "It feels like I won the lottery."
Port-Alberni-raised Mah campaigned tirelessly for two weeks, with help and support from his friends and family, to get votes for his video entry.
He claimed ultimate victory with 4,128 votes - more than double that received by the first runner-up. He was among five finalists selected from 96 original entries.
His prize includes an 80-night stay at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, three meals a day at the airport, and near-unlimited access to the airport.
That's close to 12 weeks of fully-paid-for confinement at North America's best airport and best airport hotel, as judged by Skytrax's World Airport Awards 2011.
"I love the thrill of different challenges and something like this is perfect," Mah said. "I'll basically be living in a new world, and I have this goal, which is to interview people, share their stories and showcase the hearts behind YVR."
Mah said his first investigation will be to find out what happens to confiscated items.
"My grandpa's pocket knife that he passed on to me was confiscated at an airport a long time ago," he said.
"I've always wondered what happened to it. Did it get recycled? Melted? Trashed?"
And those are exactly the kind of insights the airport authority hopes to reveal with this 80thanniversary project.
"It came from the desire to quench the public's curiosity and to let people know what happens at the international airport," said airport spokeswoman Rebecca Catley.
Catley said members of the public are encouraged to send their own questions about the airport to Mah via Facebook (Live@YVR | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LiveatYVR)) or Twitter (live@YVR (liveatyvr) on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/liveatyvr)).
Mah hasn't started blogging and filming for the project yet (Live@YVR (http://www.liveatyvr.ca)), but he's already thinking of how sad it will be when it ends.
"I take a lot of pride in meeting new people and making new friendships," he said. "There may be lasting friendships created, and when I'm done the job, I'll be back home in the apartment thinking, 'I wish I was still at Fairmont.'"
