How do i correct the "circle w/ red X) on my iPod classic 120gb?

I'm hoping i don't have to spend any money to fix my ipod, it shows this. I have tryed the thing to switch into disk mode, has not worked! iTunes will not recognize it so far.

Was this due to a drop? When you turn it on, and put your ear against it, can you hear the hard drive spinning?

It's Apple's way of saying, "your iPod is probably working fine. But one to buy a new one .."
