Just wondering how many people actually missed the mail or really noticed an inconvenience? Personally I didn't at all, all my bills are done online and I normally use couriers for work/personal anyways.

I only noticed the inconvenience because I happened to have ordered something online. If not, I wouldn't have cared.

Not so great for me. I orderered some personal stuff online and I'm impatient. At work some clients got calls from CRA as things that needed to be filed on time and didn't arrive. They freaked out.

No major inconvenience here as all bills are paid online.
But I did expect some stuff in the mail (gift cards from RBC etc.) so it's a bit of a minor thing.

If Canada post cant make the balance sheet work and needs tax payer dollars to function, maybe it's time they up the rates to these companys that insist on sending me stupid shit week after week that I just toss in the recycle bin.
Screw you Canada Post/CUPW, UPS can make money, why cant you fuckers???
This whole situation just makes me raaaaaaaaaaage.
EDIT: Before anyone gets too excited and bitches about Canada Post posting profits, you need to look at the long term numbers to understand.

Dude, usually I agree with you, and I am against the CUPW, yet you cannot compare CPC to UPS. CPC has to deliver the mail to all of Canada, for the same cost of a stamp. This means CPC will always lose money where UPS would just charge an arm and a leg to make the same delivery.

I dont think tax payer dollars has to do with anything toward canada post. Canada post is a service, it's operated by the product that it provides and the volumn of mail they get. That's how the workers get pay and not from tax payer.
Like taylor saids, cpc is always cheaper then any other company..i used to work for fedex i know.. and everytime i get something from Ups.. i always get these stupid custom broker charges..i rarely get that with canada post

........ Canada Post is a gov't & union company. TAX PAYERS pay for A LOT of their salary. Our taxes espeically go to the god damn high pensions that they keep wanting to raise up and up.
Why do you think their rates are so cheap? Because they get enough surplus from our tax dollars that they don't need to charge for all those stupid extras (brokerage...). Only thing that is poor about Canada Post is time, if your in a rush don't rely on CP, pay the money and get it Purolator'd, Fedex'd or UPS'd and pay out your ass.. Maybe even Priority Air Express for Canada Post, but again lots of $$.

well as a tax payer, i guess you can't just blame it on just cpc. How about all other gov't jobs and city jobs, cops etc...don't they get pretty good pension also?

Most public sector workers get a defined benefit pension which means that your pension is based on your salary when you retire and is indexed to inflation.
I understand where all the hate about pensions comes from, but honestly, if you're valuable employee, you'll get compensated accordingly in the private sector. And if you're compensated accordingly, you're supposed to use that extra money to fund your own retirement.
On the other hand, you could always join the public sector...

Don't worry, the day of reckoning is coming for most government jobs. They are already losing perks they should have never had (severance pay for retiring, WTF!), currently have their salary capped lower than inflation and a hiring freeze meant to bring the number of employees down through attrition and increase the workload for those left.
The next federal government union contract will be negotiated while the Conservatives are in power, so I suspect even more to be taken from government unions.

Hey I'd like to tell you something
Money is paper, and that's it.

Defined benefit pension = guaranteed return where the tax payers make up any shortfall. They hold all the risk. That's a sweet deal any way you look at it. These were the types of obligations GM gave out like candy when they had an easy source of money decades ago. It bankrupted them because it's a horrible practice to fund.
OTOH, the unions have the right to bargain for this stuff. But the last thing we need is some pussy ass govt or infiltrated govt failing to bargain in the tax payer's interest, while giving out tax money. Unions are really good at telling sob stories. Stop believing them! (This part's not addressed to you, obviously)

Money is not paper, its a concept. Yet without it you've got nothing. Unfortunately for the millions of tax payers being sucked dry by government unions, we have a lot less of it than we should.

But, I will ask this: what type public service do taxpayers want? I've heard some grumblings that people want government to be run like a business. By nature of the services that government provides, you cannot simply outsource them or run them like you would a business. For example, would you outsource what CRA does to one of the big four who probably wouldn't be able to provide the same value for dollar as accountants who work under a public sector contract? How would you provide incentives for employees and managers to perform better when the nature fo the program they're administering or implementing by its nature does not have suitable metrics? (the management of national parks, for example.)

i'm sofacking annoyed. i have 4 packages now over a month waiting. 2 from the us and 2 from china... all shipped out the week BEFORE canada post went on strike.
It depends on whose definition of business we are using. If it makes you feel better, how about running govt like an organization based on established theory? Businesses, govts, hospitals, and non-profits are all organizations. And an organization is basically a bunch of ppl working together intelligently to achieve a goal as effectively as possible, while using resources optimally; that can include employee growth amongst other things. A business' purpose isn't just to blindly outsource everything for cheap. That's one option of many and can be chosen if appropriate.
How would you provide incentives for employees and managers to perform better when the nature fo the program they're administering or implementing by its nature does not have suitable metrics? (the management of national parks, for example.)
You mean because it doesn't have an output (ie make money)? Is there an input you can measure? How about internal measures, like setting benchmarks for existing processes and then improving them; measuring how engaged the workers are in their work - if ppl show up just to get paid, then well, yeah; improving communication, knowledge sharing/retention systems through IT? These are (less intuitive) ways when profit isn't available. But no matter what program you're talking about, I have a hard time believing the academics haven't already abstracted it out.

Customer Information Hub: Canada Post/ CUPW Negotiations » Canada Post Working to Clear Mail Backlog (http://clients.infopost.ca/en/2011/07/canada-post-working-to-clear-mail-backlog/)
* Since mail service resumed, the postal system has been managing a backlog of about 40 million pieces of Lettermail.
* At the same time, more mail is flowing through the system each day as people send mail that they had been holding on to during the work disruption.
* Canada Post’s largest mail processing plants continue to operate at full capacity.
* In addition, the company is using additional staff and incurring overtime where required to help clear and process the mail.
* Canada Post continues to work with our largest customers to schedule and process mail as quickly and efficiently as possible.
* Based on our current processing plan, we are anticipating that much of the business mail backlog will be cleared in the near future.
* We expect that our mail processing activities as well as our overall delivery performance will begin approaching normal levels within a couple of weeks.
* We know this is a difficult time and we appreciate your patience.
* Thank you.

CANADA POST CEO DEEPAK CHOPRA: IN LINE FOR REWARD?
As it currently stands, Chopra earns a salary of $497,000.00 plus perks that include an additional 33% Personal Performance Bonus. With his personal performance bonus, Chopra earns $661,000 per year, the highest amongst federal civil servants and more than Prime Minister Steven Harper, who inked the legislation that will likely ensure Chopra’s reward.
