These days you can put together these highly technical stuff with the proprietary lego software and then order exactly the kind of parts you need by sending the compiled parts list to Lego themselves...

But the craftsmanship and engineering in this is still epic

I didn't see any custom parts in there - all of the parts are available in sets produced by LEGO. So yeah, he collected parts from lots of Technic sets!

Then again, you can order what you want nowadays either from LEGO themselves, or a fan-created e-commerce website.
