It's painful and sad to see any sentient creature made to suffer needlessly, the childish reason for forcing innocent beings to endure such appaling conditions just make it all the more sad.
Situations like this should serve as reminders to us that among the unique traits possessed by human beings is the desire to watch other creatures suffer for our amusement - a trait that we should work as a society to eliminate.

Yeah; because goldfish belong in lakes :failed:
While its certainly not the most PETA approved way of fish transportation, if that is truly the purpose I don't see the problem. Its a stupid novelty for a couple of days, after which the fish gets put into an aquarium I assume.
Goldfish are like practice fish anyhow. Anyone here who has had some growing up, know they end up in the toilet sooner or later. Its always due to negligence in some way or another. Should we start issuing licenses to raise fish, and sending out inspectors to ensure the accommodations are suitable before selling fish to anyone. People keep them in horrible tortuous conditions all the time.
Cat in a bag? Ok, now that would be another story. Let it out.

Sometimes it's hard to hate these mainlanders cuz they r simply ignorant. They dun see things our way beacuse they've never been educated like we do. Things like this will keep happening until the current generation dies off.

I think we need to realize these mainlanders were farmers just 20 years ago. Animals are nothing but tools. Cats are to catch mice, dogs are security guards, oxen are plowers. Just as how we dun understand how they can treat animals with such cruelty, they dun understand why we can treat animals as friends.

The definition of sentience is the ability to percieve through senses; turtle and fish have senses and respond to changes in their environment, therefore they are sentient.

canadian companies do horrible things to animals too (bear bile anyone?) would you say canada's gone too far?

I got my first pet fish when we purchased some to feed to our pet turtles. I couldn't deal and saved two of them.
They would probably have been better off being eaten by the turtles for a relatively quick death. I was like 7 and couldn't take care of fish for shit.

Bear bile is used in chinese medicine and is done exclusively in china. You actually think a canadian company can hold bears in captivity and harvest their bile?
You can also add shark fins, tiger penis and rhino horns to the list of things on which to judge china. Also pretty sure its not just the "ignorant mainland farmers" that are eating sharkfins.

Pet stores take a fish out of their tanks and temporarily put it in a bag (few hours) until the purchaser puts the fishy in a new tank. How is this similar? This is a key chain, which is essentially a fashion statement. The only way to "save" the fish is by breaking the key-chain, which completely defies the purpose of buying a key chain....derp!
http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_le8yhnZcPM1qc8pm4o1_500.jpg
so what your saying is because you bought it as a fashion statement you don't care that the fish/turtle is trapped in there
that's my point there's no reason to hate the guy selling it because the guy who bought it can get it out of there if he wanted (unlike glass platform shoes)

Well, there's more than one definition of sentience. The one I'm thinking of is the ability to think, or reason, or to be aware that one is conscience.

Self-awareness, yes, that is sometimes defined as necessary trait for sentience. See, I think that definition would apply more to keeping beta fish in a cup, they're not aware enough to realize they should be miserable in cup so it's humane. The distiction between keychain turtles and beta fish in a cup is being given food, because even low level life forms feel hunger pains.
To be fair, my opinions on animal rights are definitely much more extreme than the general publics and I respect others view points.

most of the time its because people cant think of their own opinion on a matter so they just fail whoever they don't agree with and hide behind it because their IQ is so fucking low they cant think of a proper argument.

Nothing is wrong with me, and yes i do eat all kind's of meat and i enjoy it as well. Just saying that putting a goldfish in a bag for the purpose is making a key chain is stupid. It's a living, breathing organism. I guess i haven't been to the PNE in a while, they might have them in plastic bags, i believe that's for people to take home and put in a bigger bowl or something (i don't agree with that either, cause i'm sure they will just die from shock fairly quick). Hell, in Hong Kong there is a whole street two blocks long that sells fish in bags! I was curious how people can do these kinda things, but i guess its okay in certain cultures.

you know what is a big deal? africa.
it just seems mind blowing to me that some people would freak the fuck out and do shit like 'buy a bunch of them to let them free' instead of maybe donating some time and money to help kids in africa, which i would argue is much more fucking horrible than 'goldfish in a keychain'.

How about I try to make it a bit clearer since you can't seem to comprehend.
I don't have a problem with killing animals. kill them for food, whatever. Torturing them to the limit of the conditions in which they can survive until they die due to inhabitable conditions merely for an aesthetic purpose is different. I really hope you can see that.
I could care less about peta fuck them. but I think if someone were to be wearing a live baby cow as a fashion statement until it died, would be a similar and more relevant example to the fish inside key chain one. Wearing leather from a dead animal which was (presumably) not tortured to the extent of death first is irrelevant.
All I'm trying to do is distinguish the difference between killing (even if the conditions in which the animals are kept aren't pristine) and torturing until death (suffocating/starving).

IMO its still the same thing.
cows being raised in captivity itself is torture. sure they are not starving but in the 'state of mind' the cows are probably suffering more than the fish whilst they are alive. they are there to die and become my belt to serve as my fashion item. difference is, im not seeing them die.
"presumably not tortured" HA! the world is not that nice.

^ Don't know much about farming, do you?
Cattle do not "suffer" while they are alive, and they are kept reasonably comfortable, contrary to those PETA fucks who find a few disgusting cases and try to say all farms operate that way.
You wanna know why they are treated well? Because "unhappy" (for lack of a better word) livestock is prone to getting sick. They also don't gain weight as fast as they should. This means less money for the farmer. Sure they are being raised for food, but they are not being tortured for the time they are alive and being "fattened up".
This is the dilemma facing PETA. They say farmers are only concerned with maximizing profit at the expense of the treatment of animals. However, the way you treat animals has a direct affect on your profits as poorly treated animals make the farmer less money.
