30,000 hit by power outage south of Fraser
CBC News Posted: Jul 4, 2011 9:49 PM PT Last Updated: Jul 4, 2011 9:49 PM PT

BC Hydro could not confirm reports that a hydro tower had collapsed in Metro Vancouver. More than 30,000 homes and businesses were without electricity in Surrey and Abbotsford Monday night after a sudden power outage at about 8 p.m. PT.

BC Hydro's website reported the cause either as "under investigation" or as a "wire down."

There were reports that a hydro tower had collapsed into the Fraser River, but as of 10 p.m. PT, BC Hydro could not confirm that was the cause.

The utility initially said it expected power to be restored by 11 p.m.

I was driving from Burnaby to Surrey and as I approached 108 ave on 132nd st, the traffic light went down and it was like that all the way to 96th ave. 134th st seemed to be fine however. My area was unaffected as well. :D

wtf, I thought this was unrelated.

I was driving on king Road last night around 9pm and right at that intersection (king Road/Mcbride and 142 street there were cops and the street was closed. I also saw a wrecked car on a tow truck and a bunch of people looking down the hill (towards the river). I just assumed there was an accident and somebody went flying down the hill.

After reading this, I guess the tow truck may have just been en route somewhere, but I just assumed there was an accident.

I was out of power until about 11:30.

Highway 1 closed after massive power outage hits Abbotsford, Surrey

Two hydro towers collapsed along the Fraser River near the Port Mann bridge Monday night, causing a massive blackout affecting 25,000 properties in Surrey, New Westminster and Abbotsford.

The first 230 kV steel tower crumbled along the south bank of the Fraser River, slightly downstream of the bridge at about 9 p.m. The second tower, attached by power lines, fell further south inland.

The attached power lines fell into the Fraser River and onto the CP rail yard near the Port Mann bridge. The lines deactivated immediately when the towers collapsed and did not cause any injuries, according to B.C. Hydro.

The CP rail yard was closed off and the Port Authority was redirecting boat traffic along the Fraser River. B.C. Hydro crews began working on removing the fallen wires Monday night.

Coquitlam and Surrey RCMP advised people stay clear of the area, and shut down Highway 1 both ways from west of the Port Mann Bridge to the Schoolhouse-United Blvd. area in Coquitlam.

The tower collapsed after high river levels quickly accelerated erosion along the Fraser River, destabilizing the power lines.

"Today, the situation deteriorated as a result of higher river levels and electricity infrastructure near the Port Mann bridge was affected," a B.C. Hydro spokesperson said in a news release.

"We worked very quickly to respond and BC Hydro crews have restored power to the majority of customers and are continue working hard to restore power to an additional approximately 4,000 customers."

Lights flickered back on in Abbotsford and most of Surrey around 10:00 p.m. BC Hydro crews continued scrambling to restore power to the remaining affected customers late Monday night.

Actually, it IS in the water. It's on some concrete columns and they're going to be checking out the foundation for that one soon too for signs of strong erosion but there is some real tough currents right now making it near impossible i believe. That's what i got from watching the news tonight.
