Here is my first attempt in making rainbow cupcakes. It turned out better than I thought. I felt bored that day and decided to do some creative baking. It's soft and fluffy; and tastes really yummy! I think this will be the last time I'll ever make these because too much food coloring isn't good for you.

^ For me, I like the 1st, and not the 2nd. probably bc in the 2nd image some out of focus parts in front of the focused parts. Needs a larger DOF.

The real name is Romanesco broccoli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesco_broccoli) but Fractal Broccoli sounds much cooler.
I actually have never seen purple cauliflower though..

It was my parents anniversary so I made a "Bucket of Mud" for dessert.

Homemade Vanilla/Chocolate pudding, gluten free brownies with carob chips (health chocolate chips) and skor bits, fresh whipped cream sweetened with powdered sugar and vanilla extract......then layer it as much as the bucket can hold!! Topped with shaved chocolate and decorated with melted chocolate formed on wax paper freehand with a small spoon! LOL

Actually you'd be surprised. This stuff doesn't cost too much direct. Restaurants charge an exorbitant price for this stuff, you'd probably never be able to get that amount of truffle on any dish ordered from a restaurant, ever. The whole Iberico leg was less than 100euros I believe (i don't remember exactly the cost). Black truffles are damn cheap from Italy (although prices differ a LOT based on quality). White truffle on the other hand, are rarer and that was very costly... The Beluga Caviar was as well... That was about 200usd for 2oz.

my canon fd f1.4 has some aperture problems so i sometimes have a hard time getting a good shot. combine that with a noob using a manual lens and this is what you get. oh well.

If you're doing product/food shots anyways, using live view is usually the best way with manual focus, I find.

What kind of focal lengths do you guys find you use the most for food photography? If you are hoping to be sitting a table and shoot your dinner in front of you even on a full frame I find 50 to be too long...

The vast majority of the items in my Food Tumblr (http://q.qasic.com) are shot using a 35mm on a cropped sensor (50mm full frame).

As long as the user can picture the rest of the dish, you don't need a picture of the full dish. You always have the option of backing up from the table too :-)

Went to a media preview of The Roof, a pop-up restaurant at the top of the Hotel Vancouver. It's not quite done yet...the floors weren't in but the food was interesting and when finished, it should offer...pretty much one of the best restaurant views of Vancouver I've ever seen. Your lighting is nice but you need to learn some composition. Go read about the Rule of Thirds (or Fifths if you prefer). It'll improve the look of your photos dramatically and you'll also learn when to break the "Rule".

Just a suggestion. You'll probably notice that your second picture is slightly more balanced and you immediately know where to look.
