Aircare with Straight Pipe

I searched this in the revscene forums but everything seemed to be dated a few years back.
My question is, my car is straight piped... Does this affect the aircare test?
Any recommendations for aircare places?
no cat=fail, cat=pass, its that simple

I searched in the revscene threads that there is something about a visual inspection? Can anyone elaborate??

Visually your cat converter has to be on your car.
Fail the visual inspection and you fail aircare.

They use a mirror or look under your hood if the cat is up near the motor on the header. If you don't have a CAT you fail. Simple as that.

Without a cat you will fail the gas analysis, a visual inspection is superfluous.

That's not true. I passed with straight exhaust (hollowed cat).

as long as ur car is a 97+ they use the computer, no codes = pass, a single code= fail.

some cars can still pass aircare on idle/roller test, even w/o a cat. it all depends on the make/model. some cars have higher tolerances on the AirCare system.

Why don't you just get a high flow cat, that way you won't need to change exhaust set-ups next time it needs air care or if you get a vi.

What kind of timing window is aircare for renewing your license?

Aircare is only required to renew the insurance on your vehicle, not your license.

I passed aircare with a 3" turbo back. My car was cat exempt though... Even without the cat it was way below the averages.

Aircare makes me scratch my head sometimes. I saw a guy in a replica cobra kit car go by 5 times in one day with a crazy cam. Probally never passed.

i failed 3 times in the span of 2 days
each time they always check for a cat
retarded the living crap out of the car so it was almost stalling , had numerous exhaust leaks everywhere, finally got it to pass , then returned everything to stock
:D
such a cash grab :p

agreed. agreed. agreed.
cheap pipe anyone? or just loosen the bolts for your flange from the cat to exhaust. create the biggest friggin exhaust leak so very little comes out of the tail pipe. pass aircare, profit!

Can everyone please stop saying that they ALWAYS check for a cat and look under your car. That's a blatant lie, they've never checked for any of that on any of my cars. Gotta ask my dad if they did when he took the truck through though.
They never checked me on idle test i dont think

My high flow cat looks like my straight pipe. Went through with both and passed that portion both times.

They usually do check for a cat, they pull out that huge mirror. But more or less they do it because they have to. I don't think anyone has ever failed the visual test cause I don't think they care.

I had a hollowed out catalytic converter in my s14 and didn't know about it! when I took it in to aircare a couple months ago I passed with flying colors. I guess luck was on my side; Plus my engines well taken care of too! :D

98+ vehicles only require an OBDII test so as long as the cat is there, hollow or not, it would pass if you weren't throwing any codes

So can someone answer the question if you have a newer car 2005 with OBD do they still visually look for a Catalytic converter or do they simply scan your OBD? I ask because I still have 2 cats by the header just removed one under the middle of the car.

You will just get OBD scanned.

Never had them look for my cat, because my car is too low for their mirror to fit under. Passed with a straight pipe no problems.

thats not true. I ran my 78 datsun through with no cat and it passed. granted i had to do some heavy tuning to get it to pass...

Different cars have different cat converter requirements. My 1987 RX7 doesn't legally need to have a cat converter, but I need to meet the requirements for air care to pass, ie.because I don't legally need one, it doesn't change my measurements I need to hit.
I put one on to make it easier.
I still fail.

Yeah such a broken cash grab program. I have my 2 cats still intact at the header just removed the one running down the middle centre of the car. My car is a 2005 so hopefully they just OBD it.

Luckily they will stop the AirCare program in 2014 if im not mistaken, apparently they're losing more money than they are making, so STRAIGHT PIPES ALL AROUND!
