"Scientists Punch a Hole in the Fabric of Time with a "Time Cloak""

What a preposterous world we live in, where developments in invisibility cloak tech are common enough to elicit yawns. Fine, you unmovable automatons, how about a time cloak? Is that something you might be interested in?

Researchers at Cornell have designed, built and demonstrated the first "cloak" that hides events in time. The process relies on similar methods of distorting electromagnetic fields as invisibility cloaks, but it exploits a time-space duality in electromagnetic theory: diffraction and dispersion of light in space are mathematically equivalent. Scientists have used this theory to create a "time-lens [that] can, for example, magnify or compress in time."

The time cloak takes two of those lenses and arranges them so that one compresses a beam of light while the other decompresses it. That leaves the beam seemingly unchanged, but the diffraction and dispersion actually "cloak" small events in the beam's timeline. Right now, the cloak can only last for 120 nanoseconds, and the theoretical max for the current design measures just microseconds. But the prospect of being able to exist outside of time, even for just a few microseconds, should be enough to make even the most jaded tech nerd giggle at the possibilities.

So what the news story tells us is that time cloaking is possible because of a kind of duality between space and time in electromagnetic theory. In particular, the diffraction of a beam of light in space is mathematically equivalent to the temporal propagation of light through a dispersive medium. In other words, diffraction and dispersion are symmetric in spacetime.

But will it ACTUALLY be ten years from now, or will it only be eight years with the two cloaked years in between? Or maybe those are the two years since you heard about it, and this whole experiment has actually been conducted in the future, two years ago?

It's not an invisibility cloak, it's a time cloak. It's not a matter of hiding something from sight, it's "hiding" something from time or having something exist outside of time.

I don't really understand how you can get a "split time lens".......if you cloak an event do the repercussions still occur? If someone gets stabbed in the 120nanoseconds they can cloak an event, does the guy not bleed because it wasn't seen in time?

WTF.

it's a misleading title.. the 'device' simply bends light around an object or event so that it either hides or delays the event from being visible.

the event still occurs within the time frame of everything else.. it's just that our perspective of it is skewed so that it seems delayed or non-existant.

So time doesn't stop for that? I thought it ment time stopped for what was happening for thoese nano seconds. Or does it mean that something is happening during thoese nano seconds that can't be seen until later?

I also read the theory of this tech a while back when I was really interested in the whole idea of time travel.

In the most plain language I can think of is this, time/space is usually considered constant. The tech here basically creates a shortfall of time making the event "cloaked" being a tiny bit different than the constant time/space outside of the cloak.

Therefore, if you are seeing the cloaked event from outside, you can't see it from happening. For example, if we were able to extend this tech to 10sec, a stopwatch counting inside the cloak can count from 0-->10.01sec. Watching from outside, the stopwatch jumped from 0 to 10.01 instantly. The entire event of counting from 0-->10.01 existed hidden within the usual space/time continuum.

For those who are into manga, if you have watched Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, the ability of stopping time in there can be seen as a good example.

For those who haven't read the manga, look at the pic OP posted. The outermost lines on both top and bot stands for the space/time constant. But if you somehow make the lines in the middle to expand or contract so it doesn't take the usual straight line, the actions occurred on those lines seems constant from outside (thus not violating the usual theories) while they are being a bit different.

At least that's what I remembered. Feel free to correct. :)

hehe explained it quite well.

Another analogy would be like in counterstrike and your a lagging bastard. On your screen your ok and moving around shooting etc etc. On other ppl's screen they see you pause and all of a sudden your on the other side of the map planting the c4 and shooting.

So technically if you can control this thing, you can stop time for X seconds, minutes, hours, days, etc, to do whatever, then have it seemingly catch up instantly. In other words if you kept your mind outside while your body inside the phenomenon, you can learn kung fu in one second, or go from a 120lb man to the hulk in a min. Instant results + slow down time. This is the ultimate evil villain weapon lol.

Werd. Both definitely are thought to be by the average person, but it's not the truth! This makes for lots of good mind fucks lol.

Time is relative, and it's even effected by gravity. Time moves slower closer to the center of the earth.

I love shit like this, it makes us moving forward a reality.

although it scares me too, because you just KNOW that if we can stop time for 8 hours a day,

corporations and the government would all make us sleep for 8 hours a day "outside of time" then make us work 16 hour days with less wages

Guys, no body is stopping time. There is no stoppage or slowing down of actual time. All that is happening is an OPTICAL ILLUSION that makes it appear, from an outside perspective, that time is stopped or skipped ahead.

You're thinking it's a hyperbolic time chamber like in dragon ball. But, it is not.
