Arming Yourself for the Zombie Apocalypse: How to Build the Ultimate Survival Shotgun | The Art of Manliness (http://artofmanliness.com/2011/07/11/how-to-make-a-survival-shotgun/)

Is this allowed in Canada?

Yes it is allowed in Canada. I know the article is meant to be a joke but putting too many accessories on a firearm will actually decrease your chance of survival. The reasons are as follows:
1) More weight=faster fatigue
2) More weight=slower movement
3) More accessories=easier to get tangle in tight spaces

Mossberg sell the JIC (just in case) shotgun which i believe is marketed primarly towards paranoid idiots. In fact i think it came out right after hurricane Katrina.

Its basically a pistol grip (wrist breaker) shotgun and comes in an airtight floating tube and also includes a multitool and some other crap.

Slightly OT, what's a good brand for a multi-tool and where can I get it locally?

Yeah, Murdoc's suggestion is bang on. I have several Leathermans which have never failed me. Any reputable outdoor outfitting shop will carry them, I think most of mine came from MEC.

I carry a Skeletool on me daily, my backpacking kit has a Wave and I also have a Surge sitting around the house.

MEC - Skeletool CX (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444262 3540&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302696889)

MEC - Wave (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444254 5759&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302696889)

I was actually looking at the other Skeletool they have, the one with the serrated blade.

This one, http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444262 3539&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302696889 . $54 vs $84 for the CX. That's quite a difference.

The regular Skeletool uses a 420HC type of steel compared to the CX's 154CM steel. A 154CM blade is made of a harder, tougher material and is more corrosion resistant than 420HC. It will also hold it's edge 2-4 times longer than a 420 blade. Without a doubt the Skeletool CX has a superior blade (and while it originally only came with a serrated combo blade, so far as I know the CX is now only offered with the straight blade) however depending on your potential uses for it having the serrated edge can be more beneficial.

I want a serrated blade for sure. I just know I'm going to need it 1 day and regret not having it.

BTW, thanks for the explanation.

edit: it's surpisingly small. I thought it would be bigger. It was on display at Sport Chek.

Yes, I actually own the normal Skeletool myself. Still a great knife and perfectly adequate blade. The tactical Benchmade 556 behind it has a 154CM blade. The larger Gerber behind that is in keeping with this thread topic, my Zombie Defense Knife. I have no idea where my Surge is right now.

The one on the lower right is the CX? The older model that had the serrated blade?

Nope, the regular Skeletool. I just linked the CX in my first post because it was the first one I found the link for on the MEC site.

The author states the gun weighs 7.5 pounds unmodified and 9.5 pounds with all the equipment attached. I don't know about you but for all the usefulness of the stuff included with that shotgun, ten pounds is well worth it. Especially with that sling, it won't feel like carrying anything and it would be hella valuable with so much survival equipment.

10lb is nothing.. unless your a 10 year old girl.. >.>

But some of that stuff is pretty useless the accesories.. would rather have some sort of explosive round or more bullets.. or even a door ramming attachment XD

if any of you have ever carried a weapon around for days, you'd know every pound counts lol.

While we're on the subject. What IS legal in canada? For some reason, I feel the urge to get armed up, just in case.

Right now, I've got no survival gear at all. I don't even stock canned food. 2 days without power or supermarkets and i'm royally screwed.

I'm thinking:
- firearm (shotgun? rifle?)
- combat knife
- decent leatherman
- water
- and enough MREs for immediate family

Problem 1: guns make loud noises. Loud noises attract more zombies. With a whopping 19 rounds, you're probably fucked, especially with those specialty rounds.

Problem 2: Using your gun to store all those essential tools means they must go back in the gun when you're done with them. For starters, that's extra weight in your hands that could be much more easily carried in a backpack. In addition, this means that if you have to leave in a hurry, you have to fit all that crap back into those small compartments that they barely fit in to begin with. Which means if you get caught off guard, you're gonna end up leaving things behind.

Problem 3: Having the knife all the way out near the end poses two problems. First, it's hard to access in a pinch, if something grabs hold of the gun or knocks it away from you you're screwed. Second, you're carrying that weight as far away from you as possible, meaning it's creating more torque. This isn't a bit deal short term, but long term that's unnecessary strain on your arms.

It's more of a cool display of what all you can store with just a shotgun than something I would use for survival. A good read either way.
