Computer randomly freezes.

Lately my computer has been freezing randomly at any given time. When it freezes the sound (if any) will loop and I will have no control over the computer.
Could this be a hardware problem or a should a reformat fix this?
I haven't done anything new, so I'm assuming the ram or something is dying.
