Those are some seriously nice homes for $300,000!
Makes me stop and think about how fucked our housing market is..guess everything's bigger in Texas
I wonder why they'd even have a law like that...but then again, this is ass-backwards Texas

CNN just reported that in Ohio they're giving away Vacant lots to people as long as they mow the grass on those lots for 1-2years

ah the details

'Mow to Own' vacant lots in Ohio city
Published: July 21, 2011 at 3:00 AM

SANDUSKY, Ohio, July 21 (UPI) -- An Ohio city said its new Mow to Own program allows residents to mow vacant lots adjacent to their property with an aim to take ownership of the lots.

Sandusky officials said the city is losing money maintaining more than 100 delinquent lots that are no longer generating tax revenue, WJW-TV, Cleveland, reported Wednesday.

"On average, it probably costs us, the city, $250 each time we mow a lot. We have several that we are mowing on a regular basis and we mow them through the growing season, on average, twice a month," Sandusky Landbank Coordinator Amanda Meyers said.

Officials said the Mow to Own program gives residents credit for each time they mow grass on the vacant lots.

"We take the auditor's appraised value and subtract those closing costs from there as the down payment. And the rest of it will be in kind service of mowing and maintaining. So as long as they maintain that property for one to two years, that property becomes theirs," Meyers said.

If no one claims it, why not stake a claim right? That's how the very first owner got the land.

I wouldn't be surprised if in this situation the crown would take ownership of the land in Canada though.

I saw this episode of House Hunters in Texas, this couple was comparing a 5bdrm 4000 sqft to a 3500 sqft house for around $315k, and the guy goes "Well, if I'm going to be buying an EXPENSIVE house, it should be as big as possible"...

Are we sure we want to buy a house for a revolving door of random dudes from the internet to hang out or crash at?

That's a recipe for disaster/gayness.

That bitch neighbour needs to stfu. I'd be happy for anyone who exposed this loophole. Unless the guy is partying every night, keeping his lot unkept and driving down the value of your own home, why would anyone give a shit?

Well according to the law, he hasn't "bought" the house yet for $16. He's simply filed a motion for $16 to allows him to take shelter in the house as there aren't any claimants of the property.

It would take several years before he can actually take fully ownership of the house itself and by that time, there is a chance that a company could come in and take over the mortgages that were left by the previous company.

You don't want to live in Texas. Their clay soil welcomes a lot of foundation and settling issues.

Not bad. I bet lawyers and real estate agents are thumbing through their books to look for anything of the sort in Vancouver. That'd be like landing a goldmine if this was the case here with our retarded house values.

Even if he gets kicked out after a few months, hes gained by not paying any rent for those months. Jelly neighbours.

You may just get your wish. A 15 - 20% correction in the next couple years is very likely in my opinion.

he didn't buy the place, just took permission to live in it... im sure banks would not let him live for long.

The law that he dug up stated that if someone moves into an abandoned home, they could negotiate with the original owner. If the original owner wants the squatter to leave, he'd have to pay his mortgage, and the bank would file suit to get the squatter evicted. The bank that held the mortgage has closed up shop. Epic win.
