Singer Amy Winehouse found dead - Arts & Entertainment - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2011/07/23/winehouse-dead.html)
Singer Amy Winehouse recently cancelled her summer European tour following an erratic performance. Nacho Doce/Reuters
Troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse, who had been attempting a comeback after a few years battling drug and alcohol addiction, has been found dead in her London home, according to British media reports.
Sky News and BBC reported police sources as confirming the 27-year-old singer's death.
London police issued a statement Saturday saying an unnamed 27-year-old female had been pronounced dead at the scene at a home in north London.
"Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained," said Metropolitan Police.
Erratic performances forced tour cancellation
The singer showed up nearly an hour late for a concert in June at Belgrade's Kalemegdan Park and disappointed the crowd of approximately 20,000 by stumbling about, mumbling through her songs and occasionally exiting the stage — leaving her bewildered band and backup singers performing in her place.
The concert was to be the first of a 12-date tour, which was cancelled soon after.
Winehouse rose to fame in 2006 with the success of her sophomore album Back to Black, which featured the smash hit song Rehab. In 2008, she won five Grammy Awards — including best new artist and record of the year — but her ongoing struggles with substance abuse, erratic onstage behaviour, legal battles and other personal problems have overshadowed her musical achievements.
Though she was flooded with a variety of musical accolades over the years, the performer made headlines in Britain and worldwide for her increasingly erratic behaviour, disheveled appearance, poor performance at recent concerts and substance abuse problem.
Winehouse also had a tumultuous marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married in 2007. They had many public spats, which often turned violent. The couple divorced in 2009.
She had also sought help for pyschiatric and alcohol and drug abuse problems.

Pretty true
Honestly she had talent but often times we saw how she failed to perform live due to her addictions, a lot of famous performers with drug addictions could at least squeeze out a decent performance or two

TBH I have never heard her music before. Since she seems to be so well respected I'll check it out. The only access to her I have gotten is from the occasional meme pic and online tabloid link of her looking like an absolute junky so I guess it's no surprise to anyone.

The 27 club really should be reserved for iconic musicians. Winehouse gave us a very good album but hasn't done shit in years.
But is anyone really surprised? I mean, she died Amy Winehousing.

I agree with Ronin.
RIP Amy Winehouse. Anyone dying is horrible.
Was she really that talented though? Could she sing better any most? Were here lyrics that amazing? Maybe i'm not seeing something with her music, but i didn't find it all great in any sense.

She can rest in peace. I'm not surprised she died, it is quite given what was going to happen to her eventually.
what a sad day for music.
amy was definitely on a different level of talent than just about any other female singer.
i was looking forward to some of her new music and now this is a damn shame.
and murdoc, i respectfully disagree. if you followed her music closely you'd probably have a hard time excluding her from that group of artists.
here in north america, nobody knows or cares about amy winehouse. thats a damn shame as well.
listen to frank and back to black a few times, then holla back.

If she was on the same level as the others mentioned, people in North America would certainly care about her music. The effect Nirvana had goes far beyond music too.. to even mention them (or just about any other artist) in the same breath is a mindfuck. :fulloffuck:

You must be living under a rock if you've never heard of Amy Winehouse before 2 days ago
"The singer won 2008 Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
After the Grammy Awards, album sales increased catapulting Back to Black to number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 after initially peaking at number seven"
she was really well known a few years ago before she started hitting the sauce too hard.

When it comes to pop music, I am definitely living under a rock :lol. I only heard a Justin Beiber song for the first time 2 or 3 weeks ago. And Lady Gaga like a few months ago. I have heard OF all these people, but I am not really exposed to their music out here in the boonies.

Her voice was something else...but she didn't put out enough music to be worthy of 27 Club association. She was a talent but she's no Hendrix or Cobain for sure.
