work situation

Hey, my friend is in a dilemna rite now. He is working a part-time position, and was hired for the summer. However, his family planned a trip for him during august, but he was hired specifically for the summer because they needed people. He doesn't want to lose the job, but at the same time, his family already paid for flight and accomodations and it would be a waste of money to cancel everything. This is for three weeks in advance.

should've told the employer before accepting the job.

Well looks like he has to tell the employer either way unless he is planning to ditch the trip. If he is dead set on going, then the employer has to let him off for the trip or let him go.

Waiting on it could only make it worse

i dont think he should miss the trip, unless his ticket and everything is refundable which i doubt
if hes trying to pay off his tuition himself then its a different story, but if hes just working a summer job for extra money then fk the job
if the job is one he wants to keep after summer because it was a lucky/hard find then he needs to weigh the loss in money for the trip against the money he will make up for by working
btw, remind him that the longer he has this delimma the shorter the notice time is for the boss to higher another or find me to fill in for him =D

I must say, very true. I even agree to this myself. You only get so much time to experience life with your parents. After that, its a career for 40-50 years.

And to rocksforsale, I'd say its a pretty hard find, in his perspective. but yeah...i've actually had to deal with a situation like this before.. and reality is, with part-time jobs, if you can't do something, someone else will do it for you.

Well they hired him expecting he would work for the summer. So if he left they would have a shortage of ppl.

who cares.

2 weeks is more than enough notice and is not a jerk move at all. Part time work is transient work.

If you value the job more than the vacation, stay. If not, quit.

Talk to the boss, quit, ditch the vacation, or just not show up for work. Pick one.

Truthfully it's only part-time right? So someone can cover for him. It shouldn't be a big of a deal but like everyone above said, tell him ASAP the longer you wait, the angrier he could/would be.

unless the job is beer taster or pornstar wtf is there to think about? give your 2 weeks and go on vacation. it's a burned bridge but it's only a part time job.

if it was the other way around and they needed to let you go before the summer ended they would do so in a heart beat and probably give you zero notice.

are you loyal to your employer or your family?

if only these options resulted in a win win situation, this thread would never have been created.

Not every choice in life results in win win. Not every choice is a no win situation either. don't like my choices, make another one that seems better. Everyone needs to grow up at some time and stop being coddled. Make a tough choice, make sure it's the right one for you, and live with it.

There are lots of options here but regardless I'm not a believer of fucking over a company and just leaving or pull a no show. Regardless of what choice he makes the one thing your friend must do is to be honest and tell the boss then go from there.
