im basically always on RS when im at work.

this is what i do in the morning:
-get to work
-log onto work computer
-load up work
-log on RS

im allowed to browse RS in the open. our job has internal "clock" system that calculates the amount of work you do to see if you're behind or ahead of schedule. every week it resets back to 0 for the new week. by friday, I am always ~16 hours ahead of everyone else. because of that, no one bothers to tell me to get back to work lol.

my supervisor even apologized one time for "interrupting" my RS browsing. i was like "uh... you dont have to apologize LOL"

^ how does this internal clock system work? like does it just calculate how much time a certain application is open etc?

Im working at a animation studio, completing shots for a show.

Each shot is given a certain time limit depending on difficulty or amount of work involved. IE: 50 minute shot.

as each minute pass, my "score" drops. 1 day = 8 hours.

when i complete that "50" minute shot, i get 50 minutes of score added. if i only took 30 minutes to complete that shot, i get 20 minutes added basically. if i took 60 minutes, than im -10 minutes.

so basically, im racing a clock that subtracts my score as time passes. and the goal is to stay above 0 by the end of the week. 0 being on time, anything over 0 is ahead of schedule, anything below is bad!

im always ~16 hours ahead by the end of the week, simply because im faster than the average person at this job.

i also get to watch cartoons like adventure time >;D!

actually, it's the fact that they know what I'm doing that my boss agree to let me sit the way I am sitting right now. Hell he knows I am on RS, he knows I'm reading the paper, he knows and actively participates in my bejeweled games (by telling me I'm a dumb shit and wtf I didn't see that gem)

Why so much free time you ask? I'm just doing my work quicker then the speed of which they are given to me.

My job is to push out documents, receive documents, and make changes to technical drawings. When my coworkers can only give me 10 or so documents to push out per hour, and if I work my balls off I can push out 20 documents out, it leaves me with some time to burn. And with the quality issue, I don't actually need to rush anything to win myself free time. Hell I pick out mistakes I find in drawings and documents.

Keep in mind though this dosen't happen everyday, there might be days where I'm absolutely swamped with stuff such as a huge proposal or document retrieval day.

That being said though, we USED to have another person in my position that would also surf the web and do her own thing... and JUST THAT.
You give her any sort of work and she would shove it on the side and wait for later. She was gone in a week after I was hired on as part time to replace her full time work.

Yup. Everyone in my office browses the net, listens to music, etc. etc. We don't even have set times to work. As long as the job gets done before the deadline and the client is happy, that is all that matters.

I know what I need to do for then next two weeks. I can sit on RS all day today if I want. I can get up right now and go to Richmond Centre without asking anyone. But that just means I gotta work extra hard tomorrow to make sure I stay on pace so I don't pull an all-nighter before the deadline day.

Plus I work very efficiently so what I can do in a few hours, usually takes another worker double the time.

Gumby

Face it - the younger generation of workers, while potentially very lazy, is able to work much more efficiently than the older generation.

Hell, I save so much time using keyboard shortcuts without having to move the mouse around and navigate through various menus... Coworkers always ask "how did you do that?!"

Maybe because the newer generation hasn't had their back broken yet by 30+ years of repetitive manual labor?

i dont mind the occasional surfing but when this becomes a habit, just like what you said with that ex coworker of yours, then it becomes a problem... i work hard and smart but when people pass their shit to me asking me for help coz their 'busy' and i catch them facebooking or playing games then i would call them out...

and like i said if it comes to the point where people will be laid off, and it was a choice between you or someone who works hard like you minus the surfing the net during business hours, don't make it an easy choice for the company! thats my take on it...

CP.AR

I agree - if slacking off takes priority over getting work complete - you're sacked.

I think where our point of view differs is the time spent on work vs. the average time spent to complete work.

Please don't take this offensively, I just want to explain the perspective of which I'm coming from.
Think of it like this - you pour water into two kettles, and you pay for the electricity they use per hour. (assuming that as long as they are on, they consume the same amount of energy)
Kettle #1 boils the water in 1 hour
Kettle #2 boils the same amount of water in 20 minutes, and the rest of the time it stays on to keep the water warm.

Would you call kettle #2 lazy just because it spends 40 minutes of the paid time just sitting there? No - all it did was complete it's work faster then the others. If you wanted to, you could boil more water to get your hours worth of electricity. Now, would you throw away kettle #1 or #2? IMO, the value of an employee is best defined as work completed per hour rather than time it takes to complete one unit of "work".

When'd anyone say anything about being lazy?
Completing work faster is not lazy. In fact, I'd say that's efficient.

They're assigned a job, they do it in 20 minutes or an hour. Any extra work they want to do or not do is up to the individual.

and like i said if it comes to the point where people will be laid off, and it was a choice between you or someone who works hard like you minus the surfing the net during business hours, don't make it an easy choice for the company! thats my take on it...

Why would a company lay off someone who gets their work done faster? In fact, logically, it's the people who are spending more time on the same amount of work that would be laid off first.

JesseBlue
07-28-2011, 07:37 PM
when a company lays people off, they dont even look at the positives...theyll look at the negatives and use that as the excuse to choose you...

ive been on the side that i work really smart/effiient/fast and i still got laid off...and when you see people who worked fast for a little bit and then surfed the net the rest of the time, like i said, it ticks me off...

working fast for a little bit does not equate to efficiency

Meeting deadlines is the main thing. I do slack off here and there, but being the main CAD guy in my office, I can finish drawings faster then you can mark them up and give them back to me.

Time managament & organization are keys things to have. Spend your time wisely, and you can always make free time for yourself.
