If you only do oil changes then vote NO. That is not 'wrenching'.

replaced springs AND oil changes... wrenching enough?

Yup. The hardest thing I've done was swap out my suspension or bolt ons like exhaust or intake. Nothing too complicated.

biggest thing i've done was doing a tranny rebuild/bearing replacement.
Intimidating at first but actually a breeze with the right tools/patience.

I think that counts

i USED to wrench on my old protege5. springs, exhaust, etc. not anymore. too old and not enough time and space. also, wrenching attention has been directed elsewhere.

started at 15 and no end in sight, lol.

everything from brake jobs, engine swaps, turbo setups, race cars, one-off projects, to maintaining my personal hoopty, its an addiction.

Biggest thing I've done is replace oil pump, power steering pump and alternator. Also installing new fuel injectors. Nothing too crazy.

Lowering springs :troll:

Same here. :lol

I've done everything from installing new suspension to rebuilding engines to installing a custom turbo kit. The only thing I haven't done to a car is rebuild a transmission, and that's only been because it's typically cheaper to find a used one and swap that one in instead... :lol

changed oil
installed CAI
rewired sidemarkers
removed center console assembly to get a small piece of a 12v charger unstuck...
Changed headlight assembly on my old corolla

It's not as major as what you guys do, but plenty enough for me already!

and oh yeah... does "installing" stickers count :troll:

I've changed every suspension component on my car, the ps pump and alternator, every fluid, retrofitted headlights, installed fog lights and a few little things. Here's a question for all the guys here doing major work like rebuilding engines, but who aren't mechanics. Where did you learn to do such difficult jobs?

I've lowered my car myself...with the help of Optiblue on this forum.

Bentley manuals and having help from friends who have done it before, mainly. To be honest, provided you have all the right tools, rebuilding an engine really isn't that hard to do. I found it more difficult to build a Megasquirt ecu and program it from scratch to run my old MX6.

Basic maintenance and detailing for me. Oil changes, replace spark plugs, atf flush, brakes. Cut polishing on rotary, wetsanding, etc. On my bike I changed throttle cables, that was a pain in the ass.

Definitely interested in learning more advanced stuff like how to check valve clearances, etc.

I've done my own window tinting, custom audio installs including amp racks and custom sub boxes.
I've taken out the motor and rebuilt my own motor in my old NX2000.
Replaced the clutch on the NX2000 a couple of times.

On my old Sentra, I had to take one of the seats apart to weld a broken attatchment point. Deck install and rewiring of the factory amp.

On my S2000, I've swapped out the stock shocks and springs and installed race Koni's and stock springs. Fluid flush/swap in the tranny, rear diff, brakes, and engine.
Replaced brake pads and rotors as well as broken wheel studs. Custom exhaust install.

I am in the midst of parting out a wrecked car.

if there's such a thing as part time automotive technician training, i'm definitely interested. can't do full time schooling on top of full time work :(

otherwise it's all DIY guides and learning/help from friends.

Same, I wish there was evening auto shop classes. Also welding/body work classes.

SR5 -> GTS swap
engine, trans, engine and chassis harnesses, rear diff, front and rear suspension...

I'll be doing a KE -> TE (2TG to be specific) swap soon. Same swap as yours but 15 year older stuff.

Usual bolt on stuff that doesn't require a lift (ie. suspension, BBK installs, intake, deck installs, etc). Definitely no motor rebuilds here.

installed my turbokit on my old teg, did a dash swap that took me 5hrs to do and coils

kms tools offers mig and tig classes, but welding is pretty simple, I'd just buy a couple pieces of scrap metal and practice.

everything on my car to date has been done by my own hands (or with a friend) with the exception of my first oil change - which was free from hyundai

I've only done minor works (replacing small parts or swapped in bolt-ons) based on DIY guides on car forums. I always leave major works to my mechanic as I haven't got the tools, the knowledge or the balls to do it :D

Rebuilt a few of GM 4 spds (T10, Muncie M21, SM465's). Pretty straight forward.

I have no training other than the internets and my dad who is a plumber by trade. I have stripped my car to the bare chassis, pulling motor and tranny, pulled the top end and bottom end off the motor, and put it all back and drove it. I've pulled the cabin wiring harness and rewired/resoldered everything (just in the middle of doing the engine harness now..) I've also removed the gearbox and opened it to repair a pin the broke inside.(I didn't have to pull out any gears or anything thankfully..) But I would like a spare gearbox to pull apart and play with.

The only thing I have NOT ever done is mount tires on rims, mainly because I don't have the machine to do it at home, and I'm not going to use the one at my dealership when I'm there wearing a white shirt and tie. lol.

I've mounted tires onto rims, installed a cat back exhaust system, did a led swap in my dash, installed coil sleeves, painted and installed bumper lights, and installed a couple of intakes. Pretty simple stuff.

Couldn't have done any of this without the help of my friends, school, and of course the internet.

Done brakes, sparkplugs, filters, etc.

Don't actually do my oil changes, too lazy to do it and dispose. My mechanic does it for $10 if I bring my own oil, so whatever

Half and Half.

I've done bodywork (everything you can think of exerior/interior wise), exhaust, lowering, CAI, Deck, Subs. Engine work i've only done spark plugs and oil changes.

Water pump, timing belts and stuff i let the techs do.

A monkey could run a bead with a MIG.

And TIG is easy if you're not retarded. I don't get how people keep burning through aluminum.

There's a huge difference between knowing how to weld, and knowing how to weld properly. I know a guy who took a Classes at KMS. Can't even run a bead with Jet Rod. $90 for a 4 hour class, which might end up being 2 Hours of "welding time" which means maybe 40 minutes. People who have worked in the industry with over 1000 actual welding hours can't even do thier job properly. A 4 hour class won't teach you shit. Save your $90.

Swapped catback and axelback before, installed rear sway bar, helped a friend install a coilover.....does ECU tuning count?

Feels good to work on the car...makes me love it so much more

I'd say its either:

1. There are many not voting
2. There are many voting Yes who just do minor things. Which is fine, I respect anyone that at least tries, you gotta start somewhere.

I've taken off my car's front + rear bumpers, headlight, foglights, and tail lights and put them back on (mainly to replace burnt bulbs here and there).

Lubed my sway bar bushings, which means I had to take them off and put them back on.

Replaced my suspension with the help of a friend.

Installed wheel spacers.

Installed bolt-on parts like a strut bar and an intake. Lolz this should count too.

I am not afraid of work on my car as long as there is a DIY. Thank god there is an entire forum for the Lexus IS. If its a bigger job, I usually ask my friend who works at a shop to give me a hand or teach me to do it.

Working on your own car is a large portion of the fun in modding. Once an install is done, it feels very rewarding and satisfying too.

I've done a bunch of simple bolt-on for my cars. (strut bars, exhaust, intake)
Maintenance on my cars. (oil change, dif, tranny, brake, clutch, coolent flush, brake rotors+pads)
Changed the shock+springs few times on my integra and coil-over install on my silvia.
Bunch of suspension bushings and steering rack bushing. Extended lugs
Giving mechanic friend a hand with my 5 speed swap on my integra.

Then there's a bunch of random stuff like taking apart bunch of different panels, taking my bumpers off and putting them back on a bunch of times to either paint them or to do some work behind them.
Or just adjusting the idle of my car and installing some Recaros :D
All of this was learnt from the internet and/or asking someone about suggestions or tips.
