I was going to do a worthy bump to an old thread, http://www.revscene.net/forums/537932-asahi-black-where-buy.html

The thread is closed already, where can I buy Asahi Blacks now? I am not a fan of dark beer, but Asahi Blacks are just :fullofwin:

I went to Creekside, Liquor Barn on Cambie, and ended up placing an order at the BC Liquor store on Cambie and 39th. The CSR can't even give me a ETA. On her computer, 264 bottles are coming for various restaurants only. I guess I just missed the boat.

$2.55 per bottle is what she told me.

The wait time isn't all that bad. For such a popular beer, it should come pretty quickly. I ordered an odd-ball German dark beer last time with HachiSix and a few others. It took them close to 1 month to source the beer and to deliver. Mind you, this beer was never in their database so for them to show you availability is a good sign.

HAHA yea they are so anal with ID. They check even if you are not buying. Which is weird cause I don't see them ID'ing children that families will bring into the store.

It's because you have to be older than 19 to be in the establishment. So even if your not buying anything they have to ID you for being there. It's the same as going into a bar or a club.
Also when you say it's weird you see them not ID'ing children with their family, that's because they are children.

^we understand why they can do it, but ive never been in another liquor store that enforces it so strictly. never been ID'd at the door at a BCL... and more than 75% of the time im not ID'd at the cashier either.

RiceFarmer
08-09-2011, 11:48 PM
Yeah, all the Liquor Depots/Liquor Barns and most other private liquor stores are more anal about ID'ing because the government sends out their own secret shoppers to audit if the private stores are actually following the ID procedures. Most of the time if the store fails an ID audit, the cashier will be terminated and the store can face a hefty fine or be shut down for a couple of days.. bad for business. The government will be a lot more lenient on sending secret shoppers to their own stores, therefore most of the times at the BC liquor stores you only get ID'd for the person making the purchase.

You're missing the point. You just said it yourself you have to be 19 to be in the store. Wouldn't that also mean that children should not be allowed in the store as well?

Just got lucky with Brewery Creek's shipment (Main & 14th). They placed 8 bottles in the fridge and I asked how many they have in stock. Turns out they received a case, so I bought all 24 for almost $100.

Expensive though, it's works out to be about $4.20 a bottle. :okay:

In Hawaii, they had stacks and stacks of them at Don Quijote supermarket for about $2.30 a bottle, but I couldn't bring back any without checking in baggage.

If you're patient enough, they'll source it out to the best of their abilities. They search across the country through distributors and other provincial liquor branches to see if the product is available.

You should try to contact the brewer first to see if there are any distributors in Canada before contacting BC Liquor.

I looked on their website, they only have distribution in California which doesn't even include SF Bay Area. Really small lol.

So BC Liquor Store will only go through Canadian distributors? I tried Firefly on Cambie yesterday and it seems they have that same limitation.

There are two versions of Asahi Black. The labels are different.

BC liquor stores (about $3 each) sells bottles with Japanese labels and the Brewery Creek ($4.20 each) sells bottles with English labels from USA. I am still drinking my last batch which is the English label ones so no comparisons yet.

So good so ??? Hot pot serves Blacks for $5. They serve the BC liquor store ones. Ebisu sells Blacks for $7.20 but I don't remember which label.

That would be the Japanese labels. The $95 case I bought at Brewery Creek had US English labels and it came with 6-pack carrying boxes. The BC liquor store ones are loose like a fireworks cake.

I will take a comparison photo when I have time this weekend.
