Men's hair styling products
What kind of products do you use for your hair?
I have used the pink gatsby, VS wax, rockstar wax, osis wax..
Any good recommendations out there? Somebody told me to try organic as it is better for your hair..
Thanks in advance.

yes, i recently started using unite creamy paste and i like it very much..It's organic and so dont' really worry about having chemical on my hair.. i notice less hair lost too when washing. It's a little on the pricey side but a 2oz bottle will last you awhile if you have short hair..non greasy or stickey at alll.. that's what i like most

Hmm, I've been using pink gatsby too and would switch if there's something better for my hair. I noticed that its a bit hard to remove and makes my face a bit oilier than when I don't use it.

hairdresser here, i've been through maybe 20 different waxes
the best: Bumble and Bumble SumoTech
- matte finish
- silicone based so no oilyness, washes off hands super easy
- lasts all day
- strong hold for asian hair
- makes your hair look thicker i shit you not if you need that. i have thick hair, but my clients with thinning hair looove it.
- never flakes or shows on the hair. when i had purple, i wouldn't shampoo my hair for at least a week, whilst adding product on everyday. no buildup.
only problem is its over $30 retail for a small jar and its hard to find as the brand is only exclusively carried. i don't have it at my salon now. i think Sephora has it.

I am not a big fan of the fibre by itself... and only tried this concoction because I had a small sample tub. seems to do the trick, but Just the forming cream and defining paste probably isn't much diff.. the fibre probaly adds a littlemore weight if anything.. I probably won't buy a new tub of the fibre in the future though, and stick with the paste and cream.

Bought the Bumble & Bumble Sumotech came to around $36.00. I have medium length hair.
Pros - Matt Finish, Easy to wash off hands, Medium Hold (I use hairspray, the hold lasts the whole day with the sun and wind) and small amounts required not alot. No smell and running hands through the hair doesn't leave a greasy residue like other waxes and clays.
Cons - Price & Amount.
Having tried Gatsby (Gray, Pink, Purple ) and Xtah Craft Clay I'd say the Sumotech is superior to them Equivalent would be Xtah Crude Clay, but it cost more and is easier to wash of hands after applying.
I use Mugen texture wax..korean stuff..not bad..
I guess I will try out the Bumble and Bumble next time
After going to Holt salon, they also suggested looking into Shu Uemura and Kiehl's hair styling prodcuts

I have used the hexagonal gatsby clay, sebastian clay and UNO water wax, but I'm now looking for products you would find in a Caucasian drug stores like shoppers drug mart, because I work there and get discounts. anyone heard of the company joico? How do their products hold up? I have thick and rigid Asian hair btw, so I always require a bit of layering and thinning whenever I get my cut.

Best combo for short hair, IMO
Gatsby Perfect Hold (http://www.kakoistyle.com/solid-styling-products/140-gatsby-perfect-hold-wax-extra-hard-4902806196443.html) (black), followed by Gatsby Technical Design Clay (http://www.kakoistyle.com/solid-styling-products/199-gatsby-technical-design-clay-4902806159660.html) for details in spikes (a little goes a LONG way, one jar lasts forever).
Finish with a light mist of any medium-strong hair spray. I use "Fudge Skyscraper" an Australian brand that works well.
I have recently switched out perfect hold with UNO Fiber Neo Ultra Solid Wax (http://www.kakoistyle.com/solid-styling-products/113-uno-fiber-neo-ultra-solid-wax-4901872331857.html), and the texture is different. Not sure if I like it better or not at this time. It's just... different :) It feels a little bit dryer.

I got a pomp style cut like what you have described and my stylist used Layrite as well. When I checked on Amazon I realized Layrite has a few products and I am not sure which one he used on me. The product gave my hair a shine and it smells like marshmellows. He showed me the inside of the container and it's a little pink. Is it the pomade you are talking about?

woody's web, great for longer hair that you can still comb your hands through (for medium to long hair). got it online as not many retailers carry it locally
pros: smells great, light, pliable, matte, washes out easily
cons: not a very strong hold, expensive
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31v4orQirTL._SS100_.jpg
ls&b pucka. great for any length hair. it is similar to the american crew forming cream but less greasy and dries matte. again hard to find locally. ordered mine online.
pros: smells good, pliable, great hold, washes out pretty easily, matte
cons: expensive
These products are good for the modern white boy hair styles such as the modern pomp, combover etc, so probably not an accurate review for those who style their hair like hongers/twangers etc...
I can also do reviews for the american crew fiber, forming cream, defining paste. Redken workhard, d fi destruct if you guys want.

+1.
I have this stuff in my bathroom right now. Does the trick.
I always get some sort of wax, putty, or clay. Don't like the feel/look of gel. I try a different brand every time (whatever's on sale or has packaging that catches my eye), and haven't noticed/cared enough to notice a difference.
I'm also interested in how different your hair actually looks with 3-4 products as opposed to just 1.
99% of the time I just use the one product, and I'm done in under a minute. Once in a blue moon if I really need my hair to stay put, I'll use a tiny bit of hairspray, but that's very seldom. (I've had the same bottle of hairspray for over 2 years, and it's still almost full)

what hair products have you tried? have they all been drug store brand, or have you tried american crew, redken, etc? a lot of people use /need hairspray to keep the hold after styling (esp with longer hair). I personally hate the crunchiness of hair spray so I do not use it. I like being able to run my hands through my hair even after it is styled.

For now, I just use lotion, udderly smooth cream, in my hair to create a sorta wet look.
Occasionally use Murray's, but hate that thick wax and only lasts a couple hours in my hair, strangely enough.

Amazon has it for $10..might be cheaper than buying it here. I even ebayed most of my gatsby stuff from before and saved $10 PER product.

Kevin Murphy products are the best, though I'll admit sometimes I wonder if it's truly worth paying $30+ for a single "tub". Haven't found anything as good which costs less money though.
edit: just read through the rest of the thread...I'm white, if that makes any difference with regards to hair product.

Fantastic product, but yeah I get you on the price. I used to have a hair stylist in my old hometown who gave me a 50% discount and I've stuck with the brand since.

Rockin', I'd love to try this. I can only get this at aberdeen? $?
For now, I just use lotion, udderly smooth cream, in my hair to create a sorta wet look.

Locally, I think only Aberdeen sells it but it's expensive.
As others said, it's probably cheaper on Amazon or eBay. I got mine from Japan and California, it's so much cheaper there.

since we are on a thread regarding hairstyles, I will say this much. I don't like Asian style haircuts. I like the traditional and modern cuts. The Princeton/ivy, disconnected comb over, etc. I also don't trust 10 dollar hair cuts. For those two reasons alone, I avoid/do not go to Asian hair salons. I am sorry I could not provide a racist response to feed your buddy under the bridge.

Hey, all I did was suggest that he could go to any Vietnamese salon because they are likely to carry the product he is looking for and he insisted he didn't want to. I originally speculated at first but now I genuinely want to know why. What difference does it make if he goes to a white, Indian, Chinese, Bengali or Latino salon to buy what he wants? It is a known fact that Quantum is a salon exclusive and likely to be carried by mom and pop shops.

I've been to a number of places. I have been to Jack on Cambie. The stylist there has moved to a different salon, and I have followed her to her new place on King Ed/Oak. Her style is hybrid as well. Asian/Western. For a while in between I was going to Lucious in Yaletown, then to Sebastian 1, as the stylist from the former to the latter. He was very good as he had skills with old school Barbering and also modern styles. He moved out of BC, unfortuantely. I have since gone to a guy at Clementine for Hair on Cambie 14th area. He does tight fades and pays a lot of attention to his work. I like to try new places once in a while, as you can see, lol.
I have yet to find someone who is very versatile. The ones above that I have mentioned are very good in particular styles.

If you're going for non-asian cuts, I would definitely recommend going to a barber or salon that is 'western'. Friend of mine went to an asian place to get a cut didn't like it, and 1-2 months later went to a barbershop and gave them the exact same picture as reference. Huge difference in how it turned out! After I stopped sporting asian hairstyles, I've been going to JD's barbershop in gastown and am always satisfied with their service (ask for Johnny or Travis).

I have only used gatsby grey.. and I hated it.. dried way too fast and was so matte it made it look like there was film on my hair... the lsb stuff dries matte but goes on kinda like american crew forming cream but less shiny. it's hard to explain.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but Axis Hair Salon has their house branded shampoo called "Stri'per." AXIS Hair Salons - Home (http://www.axishairsalons.com/#/products/)
It will take out anything you put on your hair. I don't suggest using it all the time unless you have product on your hair. Costs $20 but a little bit will go a LONG way.

Since no one answered you, it might worth to add my two cents now :noyoudidnt:
Try Kenra Volumizing Shampoo or Redken High Rise, both available on Amazon. Personally I like Kenra more, it's cheaper and suitable for most hair types, especially oily ones, like mine. Also it does better effect then Redken, but the last one smells better for me. Here (https://mystraightener.com/best-shampoo-for-fine-hair-creating-ultimate-volume/) you can read more about it. Or you may just look for Dove Nutritive or Pantene Pro-V at the nearest local store, both seems fine for me too.
If anyone is looking for a matte finish wax that does not leave residue on your hair and washes off easily I highly recommend bedhead wax that can be found on the shelf of Shoppers. I think they go for $15 each. I'm quite picky with my hair products and I always end up going back to it after trying basically everything out there.

used many different products in my life,
gatsby, got2b, pomades if different kinds.... (layrite and more), di:fi, and other shit
i find loreal tecni art hairspray is the best with a good blow dry, only $20 per bottle as well in richmond where i live. Search it up on the loreal online website to find local salons that carry it.
a good 5 minute blowdry with a good brush + hairspray is best. Holds better than any product and very stylish.
edit: also depends on what type of hair style and length of hair you have. The shorter the hair, no need for hairspray. I find gatsby red box is good for short hair. Gatsby can be found in local TnT markets. For longer hair, this hairspray does the trick. No residue, long lasting hold, and workable.
