Road Trip! Russia approves tunnel to Alaska under Bering Strait — Autoblog Canada (http://ca.autoblog.com/2011/08/26/road-trip-russia-approves-tunnel-to-alaska-under-bering-strait/)

The Russian government has given the go-ahead on an ambitious new tunnel project that could connect Siberia with Alaska via an underground rail line. If completed, the $65 billion project will be the longest underwater tunnel in the world, besting the Chunnel between England and France by twice the distance. The planned course would stretch over 105 kilometres and would snake beneath the Big and Little Diomede Islands. According to Inhabitat, the project will be funded by a private and public partnership. So why build it?

Aside from being a civil engineering marvel, the tunnel would also provide an efficient way to move 100 million tonnes of freight per year. In addition, the tunnel could provide an easy transmission route for electricity developed by tidal energy stations and wind plants in Russia to Alaska and Canada. In addition, the rail system would complete a high-speed network that could stretch from London to New York City. Unfortunately, the project doesn't seem to be geared toward passenger travel. At least, not for now. Thanks for the tip, Chad!

Is it going to be using standard railway gauge or Russian railway gauge? In school I heard the Russians backward engineered everything in case if they ever get invaded by the Yanks.

edit: actually I wouldn't be surprised if this is going to be something totally different from normal railways.

It's a rail line, not a driving tunnel; geared towards commercial use, not public.

Dude, you didn't even have to read the article; just the quote alone would've told you its for trade and energy purposes, not public transportation.

The tunnel from France to England is also a rail line only.

It would be cool to drive to India.

lol the people who thanked this post did not even bother reading the first sentence in the quote.

the Arctic holds quite a bit of potentially valuable resources for Canada in the future, why do you think Russia/China wants a to claim it so badly?

I didn't realize this stretch would only be 100km...sounds totally doable..i was thinking at least 500km +

Only 65 billion? Sounds more like a trillion dollar project if they run into issues working at those temps and under the ocean floor!

From the people who brought you the Lada and the Trabant....now, the tunnel to end all tunnels! Yep, Id'd be first in line to ride that sucker....not! :D

"The Laika and Niva models' popularity began to wane after a few years because of the perceived lack of quality of all Lada car models. The cars were also widely criticized for their poor design. "

The Trabant...
". With its mediocre performance, inefficient two-stroke engine, noxious fumes and production shortages, the Trabant is often cited as an example of the disadvantages of centralized planning; on the other hand, it is regarded with derisive affection as a symbol of the failed former East Germany and of the fall of communism (in former West Germany,"

Just look at the Channel Tunnel. Completed in 1994, it's less than half the length of this proposed tunnel. Think of all the engineering challenges they faced and problems they still face today in the channel tunnel, now imagine building something more than twice the size under the Bering strait decades prior to that. I'm not saying it couldn't be done back then, but you have to be realistic.

okay, but 1994 compared 2011 is a much different world. Technology in the early to mid 90's were just starting to evolve into what we have today.

FYI, my fail was reasonable, no need to be butt hurt :lol
