HP TouchPad apps/modding thread
freakshow
08-29-2011, 11:56 AM
I decided to branch the TouchPad thread into buying vs modding/apps/accessories since, as underscore (http://www.revscene.net/forums/651772-hp-touchpad-thread-27.html#post7560923) said, its a bit of a pain to have to search through 27 pages to find one link on preware, or OCing.
So, if you guys don't mind, can you repost the useful OCing, modding, android port/app stuff in here instead?

i can't seem to get my TP to update to the latest version. anyone have this?
HP Touchpad Setup/Tweaks/Aps Guide
So you just got your Touchpad after refreshing slickdeals for 20 hours until you finally were able to buy one and wait 3 weeks for it to come to you...
The first things you should do when you first start up your touchpad...
Visit this thread and do the shit in it :
New Touchpad? Here's your "Get Started" guide - PreCentral Forums (http://forums.precentral.net/hp-touchpad/293028-new-touchpad-heres-your-get-started-guide.html)
1. Upgrade WebOS to the most recent version. Click the arrow on your bar in the bottom right and go to "Settings -> System Updates"
2. Install Preware (which is sort of like Installous for iOS but without all the illegal apps). Guide to do this here :
How to Use Preware for Homebrew Apps, Patches, and Themes | The #1 HP webOS, TouchPad, Pre, and Veer Community | PreCentral.net (http://www.precentral.net/how-use-preware-homebrew-apps-patches-and-themes)
3. Overclock your touchpad if you like. Stock speed is 1.2ghz. You can overclock the touchpad to either 1.5 or 1.7ghz. This required preware and a couple other apps. Guide here :
How to: Overclock the HP TouchPad to 1.5GHz (http://www.webosbuzz.com/hp-touchpad/694-how-overclock-hp-touchpad-1-5ghz.html)
4. Now you need to disable system logging and install some patches via preware. Guide here :
How to improve the performance of your new HP TouchPad | ZDNet (http://m.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-news/how-to-improve-the-performance-of-your-new-hp-touchpad/3866)
Your touchpad should now be running faster than a car with a stripped out interior
- The best website for finding cracked/illegal apps and games is :
Mobilism • View forum - WebOS (http://forum.mobilism.org/viewforum.php?f=555)
the cracked apps come in .ipk format and can be installed via the webOSquickinstall that you downloaded when you put preware onto your touchpad.
- There is a different browser that I like much more than the vanilla one. Download it here :
Download webosbuzz.com.maklesoft.browser_1.1.0_all.ipk for free on Filesonic.com (http://www.filesonic.com/file/1682796264)
- You can install Ubuntu on your touchpad. There is a guide here but it's pretty time-consuming:

webOS is still alive. It's the hardware (i.e. Pre and Touchpad) that died.

^ not too interested in having Android on my Touchpad. Other than for the fact that "hey that's cool".
webOS is pretty good once you apply the patches. UX-wise, the design is much better.
Yeah, I'll only use Android as a last resort, but it's always good to have choices.
I finally got around to overclocking my Touchpad today. Anyone else find it performs worse overclocked than stock ?
I'm overclocked at 1.7ghz using the f15c kernel with no issues whatsoever. It's when you start overclocking it at anything over that speed that makes the touchpad unstable

It all depends on personal preference imo. I'm used to Android and know what the good apps are, and know that it's still the #2 platform.
Plus heavy Google integration is so much win.

I found touchpad quite picky about internet connection. Youtube, facebook, or even yahoo.ca and revscene frequently does not load when using a "G" router at work. It gets stuck and shows error message after awhile of loading nothing (circular icon spinning)
It however runs smoothly with "N" router at home.
Weird!

Can not add or update feeds to obtain F4 kernel or F15C kernels anymore. They seem to have shut beta testing down. You have to create a linux command line to unlock the feed update.
I am a noob and it all seems too complicated, so I can only OC with uberkernel to 1.5ghz. Didnt really feel any different.

And that's exactly why Uberkernel exists on the public feeds and they locked down the beta/testing feeds. If you feel uncomfortable "hacking" away on the command prompt then you shouldn't be messing around with the other kernels that are a bit more unstable than Uberkernel....and like you said, 1.5ghz doesn't feel much different than running it at the higher clock speeds anyways.

Android, Coming Soon To Your HP Touchpad
http://edge.alluremedia.com.au/m/l/2011/10/cmod.jpg
Snagged a HP Touchpad (or seven) during its $98 fire sale in August? Either you’ve come to terms with what webOS offers and its decidedly terminal fate, or, you’ve been hanging out for CyanogenMod to get Android onto the hardware. It looks like CM are getting closer to making this reality, judging by their latest video.
CM has put together an experimental installer, called ACME, to automate the process as much as possible. There are a few steps you need to do beforehand, as shown in the clip, but it’s by no means a laborious task. You can even set it up to have Android and webOS running in a dual-boot configuration.
Sadly, the installer hasn’t been made available and no date is forthcoming — not even an alpha — but I’m sure Touchpad owners are happy to know a bright, Android-shaped future awaits them.

There is one glitch. Don't let your TP run out of power. I was using it on sunday and forgot to charge it. This morning, the device wouldn't turn on when after charging it for a while, the only thing it does is show the CM7 logo cycling. I can hard restart and go to WebOS no problems but android will not load.
Only fix for this is to delete and reinstall CM7.
This time around, I might wait for Beta to come out before I install it.

In case any body is looking for a way to input chinese in webos here a patch that adds baidu pinyin and chinese handwriting. FOR 3.0.4 ONLY i'm been using this for a few days very stable and the text prediction is very good. There seems to be a minor bug where it doesn't remember that you left that keyboard on eng, next time you bring up the keyboard it forgets and default to chinese. nothing major only one click to change it back. It does both simplify and traditional chinese
to install either:
1. open link through touchpad and download/install directly via preware
2. download to desktop than install with webosquikinstall

It's pretty good. Although I went from WebOS directly to 3.5 without trying the other builds. It's stable, however whenever I stream a video. The screen is filled with lines of purple and green.
However, I just restarted my Touchpad and it works fine now.

Apparently it's very difficult to brick a Touchpad thanks to WebOS Doctor or some such computer program that you can use for recovery.

Yeah, I just read [Release][Alpha3.5]Cyanogenmod Touchpad - RootzWiki (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10121-releasealpha35cyanogenmod-touchpad/) a few times and I was still confused LOL :(
A) Made the cminstall folder in the wrong section
B) novacom was giving me issues when installing
And installed it twice without doing it properly, I just turned it off and turned it back on. Tried again and on the 3rd time it finally worked. Pretty idiot proof, although it took me like 2 hours since I had to install Java SDK etc.

Okay, I got it working. FYI
When I initially updated using novacom and ACMEInstaller2, my Google account wasn't work and numerous data/wipes/fixes/etc didn't solve the problem.
I just wiped and reinstalled directly from CWM (contrary to what they suggested initially) and so far so good!
Used these fixes in addition to the cm9 update

Well finally got everything up and running like I want it to.
What ended up working for me (a lot of similar setups from rootzwiki)
- format data/system/cache directly from CWM
- flash force close fix
- flash gapps v8 (for some reason this didn't work with ACMEInstaller or without the format of system)
- flash gapps fixer
Verdict : Amazing. Finally having a tablet based OS is miles better. I'm glad I didn't sell it because once they've worked out the quirks, this will fly.

got a guide for the cm9 install? give us your version vs rootwiki
It's pretty much what I posted above but I'll try to provide more detail to get you started.
D/L and copy to your TP the following files (can provide links tonight after work):
Alpha 0.5
Forceclosefix
gapps v8
gapps fixer
1. Boot to CWM
2. Format system/data/partition (in mounts & storage)
3. Flash Alpha0.5
4. Flash forceclose fix (not sure if necessary anymore with 0.5)
5. Flash gapps v8
6. Flash gapps fixer
7. Reboot
*this should work, mind you I did use ACMEInstaller2 several times at first before just simply installing through CWM. I'm going to take a stab and say completely bypassing ACMEInstaller2 should also work, but don't hold me to it.
**This is for a clean install (backup your important stuff lol)

I upgrade from CM7 to CM9 just last night.
And then 0.6 came out today :suspicious:
The wifi works for me now!!!
Some HD stuff doesnt work like YouTube HD.
So much smoothier.. and nicer.. maybe that due to ICS UI ;D!

[Release][Alpha2] CyanogenMod 9 Touchpad - RootzWiki (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/18843-releasealpha2-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/)
Alpha 2 Release notes:
This is for video playback fixes only, no other changes.
Fix netflix and other apps that rely on http live streaming
Fix blocky video due to bad scaling
Alpha 1 Release notes:
We finally have hardware video decode working largely thanks to some help from yjwong. This release is primarily just to get hardware decoding out for folks to enjoy while other work continues. This build does not work with Netflix yet. However, hardware accelerated video decoding does work for Youtube HD and playback of local media. This build still uses the 2.6.35 kernel. The 3.0 kernel is still being heavily worked on and is also the primary focus for development. Don't expect hardware video decoding to be perfect yet. Its half a miracle it works at all on our current kernel.
Similar to the last build I will provide flashable zips to make it easier to switch to lcd density 120 with proper launcher layout. The hardware video decoding will not make it into the nightlies for a few days. There is still some work to do in order to get it merged into repositories and ensure it doesn't break other devices.
Hardware video decoding support. As a result, Youtube HD and 720p and 1080p local media will now be playable. Netflix does not work yet.
Includes touchscreen improvements by Dees_Troy
Now able to enable use of 2D companion core to offload composition

I've played around with LCD density's and 120 was nice but i found 132 to be the best (also recommended by dalingrin) but it broke the Market. I think there's a LCD Density changer that lets you access the Market but I haven't personally tried.

Hmm USB debugging? I'm only familiar with enabling that if you're rooting or for developing (or debugging haha).
If you just want access to your files you can just enable MTP mode and it shows up fine on my computer. Mind you MTP is probably a little bit fussier when it comes to connections. I'm using Windows 7 with no problems, I know Mac is a different story.
As well if you don't want to boot into webOS you can also boot into CWM recovery and mount USB storage from there

In Settings under Storage. Hit the three dots on the top right and tap USB computer connection and you've enabled MTP there? I'm a bit confused because MTP and debugging are separate.
