The RCMP have issued an Amber Alert for a 3-year-old boy who disappeared from his Sparwood, British Columbia home overnight.

Kienan Hebert was last seen when his family put him to bed on Tuesday evening. The toddler was reported missing at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, prompting police to begin searching the community, about 600 kilometres east of Vancouver, with the aid of helicopters and sniffer dogs.

The Mounties say they're looking for 46-year-old Randall Hopley and a 1987 brown Toyota Camry with B.C. licence plate 098RAL.

Kienan is described as Caucasian with red hair. RCMP said he had been wearing "Scooby Doo" boxer shorts and may have been carrying up to three blankets.

Police say that Kienan and Hopley are of no relation.

In an interview, B.C. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Kienan has a history of sleepwalking, "but in past incidents, he's never exited the house."

Investigators have been speaking to the boy's family and making inquiries in the local community, Moskaluk said.

Anyone with information on Hebert's whereabouts is asked to call the Elk Valley RCMP at 250-425-6233.

might just be a registered sex offender that lives in the area who's they can't find as well

edit: yep, Hopley lives in the same area and has a history of break-ins and was accused of trying to kidnap a child but lack of evidence threw that case out

Moskaluk says Hopley does not know the child missing from Sparwood, and he won't or can't say why police believe the three-year-old might be with him.

AMBER ALERT: Suspected abductor of three-year-old Kienan Hebert has vast criminal record (http://www.theprovince.com/news/AMBER+ALERT+Suspected+abductor+three+year+Kienan+H ebert+vast+criminal+record/5366041/story.html)

The boy told his foster mother Hopley had broken into the home and on two occasions, tried to push the lad out of his bedroom window.

“Hopley claimed he tried to abduct the boy from foster care and transfer him to his biological parents for $2,800,” said the report.

StylinRed
09-08-2011, 11:10 AM
the boy was also special needs so the case was thrown out

Also they're having a Press Conference right now on the news

the RCMP is saying that they don't know if Hopley is a suspect they can't find him is all and if he hears of these alerts they would like him to come forward and speak with the RCMP

so yeah they've accused him simply on his history

However this missing boy is also prone to Sleep Walking (however you would think he would have been found now if that was the case)

Did the suspect break anything to get inside the house? or was the front door open when they found out the kid was gone? Maybe the answers are in the news and I'll just have to read it again.

"Can't find the suspect" is a pretty good reason. If he is registered then he likely has conditions that restrict his movements/travel. The reason they can't find him is he's probably violated those conditions, and coupled with the boys dissapearance makes him a prime suspect.

B.C. fugitive built child lair in Alberta cabin: family

Link to CTV news (http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110908/bc_randall_hopley_child_lair_110908/20110908/?hub=BritishColumbiaHome)

By: Jon Woodward, ctvbc.ca

Date: Thursday Sep. 8, 2011 8:27 PM PT

The family whose cabin was broken into and then turned into a warped child's playroom by a B.C. fugitive wants to know how a man with so many warning signs could have been released into the public before his trial.

Randall Hopley is charged with squatting for months last year in a cabin belonging to the Skapin family in Crowsnest Pass, filling the drawers with stolen children's clothing, chocolate bars and sex toys and building a room that could be locked from the outside.

Authorities charged Hopley in the case, but released him months later. Now, police believe he has abducted three-year-old Kienan Hebert. It's a situation the Alberta justice system should have prevented, said Laura Skapin, who lives in Calgary.

"When I heard about this case, I thought, ‘Thank God Randall Hopley hasn't been released,' – and then I found out he had been," Skapin told CTV News.

"If this little boy is harmed because of that, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered."

Hopley has at least 11 assault and burglary convictions, and was also accused of attempting to abduct and molest a Sparwood boy in 2007 – a case that boy's mother says wasn't handled well either. He was convicted of sexual assault in 1985.

But Skapin believes the clearest indication of Hopley's plans was found in their cabin last year.

Skapin said that last May she, her brother, and her two adult children visited the cabin on Crowsnest Lake to scatter her mother's ashes. But they found the gate lock had been changed and a strange man was on the property.

"He looked like a druggie," recalled Skapin, adding that he was wearing women's pajama bottoms. "He was spewing all sorts of profanity."

The Skapins called the police, and the RCMP arrested Hopley while he was trying to escape in his truck. He was charged with 12 counts, including breaking and entering and possessing stolen property.

In amongst jerry cans, propane tanks, vehicle tires and generators that were stolen from Alberta Fish and Wildlife, there was a photo of a young child with dark hair, according to court documents.

There was stolen lotion, children's movies, sex toys and children's pajama pants that had been cut up to become a thong. A wall had been knocked down and replaced with a Dora the Explorer blanket.

"Police found a variety of things set up for a young child, like a baby: diapers, stuffed clothing and a variety of sexual paraphernalia," said Joni MacFarlane, a reporter from the Crowsnest Pass Promoter who covered the story at the time.

"There was no mistaking his intentions. It was horrible…. We [came to the cabin] and ruined his plans. He was very upset about that," said Skapin.

Hopley's trial is scheduled for Sept. 19. He was ordered released with several conditions, including to keep the peace, and have no contact with the Skapins and others. He was bound by a curfew to stay at his residence in Sparwood between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

But as Skapin points out, the conditions don't keep him away from children, playgrounds, or schools.

"That makes me sick," she said.

The cabin had been in the family for five generations, but now Skapin hasn't been able to return. The family has since it torn down.

"I couldn't go in there. I haven't been back since," she said.

She said she hopes that Hebert will soon be reunited with his family.

"I hope that little boy is okay," she said.

SPARWOOD (NEWS1130) - Three-year-old Kienen Hebert has been found safe and sound. The boy was returned to his Sparwood home just after 2 a.m. As a result, the Amber Alert has been cancelled.

Police are still searching for the man they believe took Hebert, 46-year-old Randall Hopley.

Hopley is suspected of taking Hebert from his home on Tuesday night. A massive search for the pair was launched and an Amber Alert stretched from BC into Alberta.

Mounties say Hebert wasn't hurt.

there totally is more to the story. can't be that simple. i was thinking at first it was like that movie Changeling where the authorities return the kid to his mother but the mother discovers that the kid is an imposter. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeling_(film))

i'm thinking if Hopley kidnapped the kid, he realized the extent of the search for him and the kid. got scared, probably brought the kid back into town at night and then sent him back home alone. then Hopley snuck back into the woods to hideout and/or kill himself.

just glad that hopley didn't get all freaked out about the exposure he has and killed the kid.

that's if hopley was the kidnapper.

definitely something is up. maybe it was a family member instead of hopley and now they're not letting the kid talk for fear of implicating one of their own.

or maybe the kid has got a medical/mental condition.

I think you misread the article....

While police wouldn't offer any insight about the earlier abduction attempt, Michelle Kaus, who lives less than a block away from Heberts, said her home in Sparwood — about 240 kilometres southwest of Calgary — was broken into the same night Kienan was taken.

Police later told the mother of two that the suspect's footprint was found in her garage. Her children had not been home at the time of the break-in and nothing was stolen except an iPod filled with photos.

"It's really hard to accept that we had a psycho in our house touching our things," she said. "I haven't gone through the kids' stuff, so I don't know if he's taken any toys."

Kaus's children, a son, 4, and a daughter, 2, were visiting their dad in nearby Elkford, B.C., on Tuesday night, leaving the mother free to go out with a friend.

"I left the door unlocked because the outside lights were out and I didn't want to be fumbling in the dark with my keys," she said, adding: "Stupid."

SPARWOOD, B.C. — Police on Monday said they "facilitated" the safe return of Kienan Hebert after he was missing for four days, but would provide few details on how an abductor might have been able to return the three-year-old boy to his B.C. home undetected....

Driving to the Hebert house would have required passing the search-and-rescue command post at the entrance to the suburb, as the community has only one road in to it. :seriously:

...Asked if it's believed Kienan was assaulted at all, sexually or otherwise, Moskaluk said: "He was virtually unharmed. . . . He does not have any physical injuries."

I wish I had learned to sign. I would love to understand what deaf people are saying to each other.

this is a bit of a thread jack, but a fascinating article and since Kienan's home the crisis is over.

WHAT have famed pianist Arthur Rubinstein, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, India's self-taught mathematical genius Ramanujan, Nobel Prizewinning economist Gary Becker, talk show host G. Gordon Liddy and renowned physicists Richard Feynman, Edward Teller and Albert Einstein all had in common?

Aside from being remarkable people, they were all late in beginning to speak when they were children. Edward Teller, for example, did not say anything that anyone understood until he was four years old. Einstein began talking at age three but he was still not fluent when he turned nine.

While most children who are late in beginning to speak are male, there have also been some famous female late-talkers -- celebrated 19th century pianist Clara Schumann and outstanding 20th century mathematician Julia Robinson, the first woman to become president of the American Mathematical Association. In addition, there have been innumerable people of exceptional ability in a number of fields who were years behind the norm for developing the ability to speak when they were children.

Parents and professionals alike have been baffled as to the reason for delayed speech in children whose precocious intellectual development has been obvious, even when they are toddlers. Some of these kids can put together puzzles designed for older children or for adults. Some can use computers by themselves as early as age two, even though they remain silent while their peers are developing the ability to speak.

No one really knows for sure why this is so. These children have only begun to be studied within the past decade. My own recently published book "The Einstein Syndrome" is one such study. More research on these children is being conducted by Professor Stephen Camarata at the Vanderbilt University medical school. He was himself late in talking.

Research on Einstein's brain has suggested to some neuroscientists that he was late in talking because of the unusual development of his brain, as revealed by an autopsy. Those portions of his brain where analytical thinking was concentrated had spread out far beyond their usual area and spilled over into adjoining areas, including the region from which speech is usually controlled. This has led some neuroscientists to suggest that his genius and his late talking could have been related.

At this point, no one knows whether this is the reason why Einstein took so long to develop the ability to speak, much less whether this is true of the other people of outstanding intellect who were also late in beginning to speak. What is known, however, is that there are a number of disabilities that are more common among people of high intellect than in the general population.

Members of the high-IQ Mensa society, for example, have a far higher than normal incidence of allergies. A sample of youngsters enrolled in the Johns Hopkins program for mathematically precocious youths -- kids who can score 700 on the math SAT when they are just 12 years old -- showed that more than four-fifths of them were allergic and/or myopic and/or left-handed.

This is all consistent with one region of the brain having above normal development and taking resources that leave some other region or regions with less than the usual resources for performing other functions. It is also consistent with the fact that some bright children who talk late remain impervious to all attempts of parents or professionals to get them to talk at the normal time. Yet these same kids later begin to speak on their own, sometimes after parents have finally just given up hope and stopped trying.

Noted language authority and neuroscientist Steven Pinker of M.I.T. says, "language seems to develop about as quickly as the growing brain can handle it." While this was a statement about the general development of language, it may be especially relevant to bright children who talk late. As the whole brain grows in early childhood, increasing the total resources available, the regions whose resources have been pre-empted elsewhere can now catch up and develop normally.

My research and that of Professor Camarata have turned up a number of patterns in children with the Einstein Syndrome that were similar to what biographies of Einstein himself reveal. Most children who talk late are not like those in our studies. But a remarkable number are.

Unfortunately, many of these children get misdiagnosed as retarded, autistic or as having an attention deficit disorder.

Randall Hopley, the man who allegedly abducted three year old Kienan Hebert from his home only to return him five days later, has been captured on Tuesday.

RCMP found Hopley hiding at a gravel pit near Crowsnest Pass at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

A K-9 team from Kelowna is credited with capturing Hopley, who tracked him to the area.

Hopley was brought back to Sparwood in police custody soon afterwards.

Hopley has remained at large in the community ever since Kienan's disappearance on Sept.5 and mysterious return on Sunday.

Police gathered in the community of Sparwood B.C. early Monday morning and set out on ATV's, on foot and in a helicopter to search the area.

The search continued in Crowsnest Pass on Tuesday morning and at about 10:30 a.m. a flurry of RCMP activity was reported in the community, indicating that something big was happening.

Police want to talk to 46-year-old Randall Hopley in relation to the abduction of the little boy from his home last week.

Kienan, meanwhile, remains at home with his family and was unharmed during his ordeal.

so technically the suspect can enter and leave the house unnoticed?..this doesnt sound right.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read the news. My spidey-sense is tingling on this one.

Was it even this dude that took him?

I remember reading the Vancouver Sun and it said the parents left the doors to the home unlocked because they were afraid of fidgeting with keys at night when they get home. WTF were they thinking about leaving a 3 year old home alone with no doors locked??

Fucking idiots. I'm just glad the kid is back home and hope the parents wake the fuck up

You know what though, Sparwood is a small town, and living there might have similarities to what it was to live in a bigger city like Vancouver back in the 80's. Back then, people weren't that concerned about locking doors to their houses. People just felt safer than they do now. I don't know whether it really was safer or not, but people just weren't as concerned that a random stranger would come rob the house or whatever.

Summer time we leave our door open to get a nice breeze in our home. I feel safe in our neighborhood and our neighbors always report weird shit.

Maybe so, but i feel it was pretty idiotic of her for public announcing it.

Yeah... but I assume you do that when people or the family is in the house to monitor if some random just walks in.

Apparently not for this woman... since she said she will leave her doors unlocked again now that Hopley's been caught.

Ya I did too, until they found a body down my street. And I live in a freakin' awesome neighbourhood where the neighbours still know one another and bring each other little gifts here and there, or borrow sugar. But way too many random stuff happening over the past 2 years that most of everybody locks their doors now.

My neighbourhood's like that^^^ Everyone knows everyone.

I lock my truck on the street, haven't done it when it's parked in the carport for ages. We lock the door at night, cuz we've been robbed a couple times, during the day i never lock the door.

Oh, this reminds me of something.
Just the other day at around 1am, I was going to get some cash from the ATM.
I saw another guy there at the ATM machine, but he left his car running, with no one in the car.

Then it occurred that occasionally, when I go to 7-Eleven late at night, I see some people leaving their car running,
while they are inside making a quick purchase.

:fulloffuck:

Am I the only one that's "paranoid" ??

Nope, Just wait til someone drive away with their cars. It happened to my neighbor who starts his car in the morning to warm up and went back inside to grab his coffee and breakfast (back in 2001, we had no remote starter). Another time with my friend who left her car running while going inside to grab laundry to go to the dry cleaner.

You are pretty much inviting the thief in by leaving door open or engine running
