Income taxes to rise in B.C. following rejection of HST - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/bc-politics/income-taxes-to-rise-in-bc-following-rejection-of-hst/article2158190/)
British Columbians should brace to pay more in personal income taxes as part of the price of voting to eliminate the harmonized sales tax, finance minister Kevin Falcon said Thursday.
At a briefing to update the province’s fiscal situation, Mr. Falcon said the province will have to absorb a $2.3-billion hit over the next three years as it unbundles the provincial sales tax and the federal Goods and Services Tax - as directed by a majority of voters in a province-wide referendum.
The PST is expected to be back in place no later than March, 2013 and when it is restored, the government will also claw back $456-million worth of tax relief that it had bundled up with the introduction of the HST.
That includes $230-million worth of low-income tax credits, and $226-million that increased the basic personal exemption on income taxes.
Mr. Falcon said the government will still meet its balanced budget targets in 2013 but it will require “belt-tightening” to cover the increased costs associated with backing out of the federal agreement on the HST.
However, the figures presented at his fiscal update were inflated because they did not factor in the promised reduction in the HST rate, had the government won the referendum. Finance officials later said the cost of re-introducing the PST and the GST will be $2.2-billion over three years.

Are you retarded?
The vote came down to 54% vs. 46%. That's a 4% difference. The outcome could have easily been the other way around had more people went out and voted.
52% of the province came out and voted. That leaves a whole whopping 48% that did not. Even if you account for people being away, the number is ridiculous.

these increases to the income tax (more like decreases to credits) are not very significant at all. Morever, the more income you have, the more you'll contribute to paying off this debt. Half of you people on here who are students with low income should not even be worried. The others who have a moderate income are also not TOO screwed either. Don't just hear "tax increase" or "tax cut" and react violently right away

the only silver lining in all of this is seeing the expression of the poor/uneducated that voted against the HST watch all these stories and realize what the fuck have they done?

And once again if this happens the majority of short sided public will not bitch about how the government fucked up in the first place but will instead bitch about the majority vote that abolished it.

Except the poor aren't the ones that are paying the extra taxes - most of the tax burden will fall on the middle class who don't have the ability to write off their expenses.

But if the HST was never introduced, we wouldn't be in such a position, right?
I guess this is a case of two wrongs don't make a right?

I think that with the way things are going in the country - a lot of provinces will be introducing HST in the next 10 years. It honestly makes more sense for businesses to open up in a province with HST than the PST/GST combo, and in a few years - as businesses stop opening up in BC - they'll understand and reintroduce the HST.
It's funny - because the Ontario Premier himself said that if BC scrapped the HST - it would give his province a competitive advantage.

At least with the HST you can control how much money is taken out of your pocket, spend less, save more. With income tax, the govt decides how much money they get to take.
So most people should care!

Exactly! It was a completely stupid idea to hold a referendum on taxation (and service) issues. What else do you expect?!
"Who wants to pay more taxes?" or "Who wants more hospital beds?" Of course the answer is no or yes respectively.
It's like asking your children, "Who wants to eat chocolate for dinner?"
The government is supposed to make those kinds of decisions on behalf of the population.
Plain idiocy...
anyone who didnt see this coming is fucking blind.

There were a lot of people I know that voted against it. Why? Lack of education & knowledge of the pros and cons of the HST and just constantly hearing how "bad" the HST was. Nobody wants to go out of their way to learn about it, the information wasn't just there. People only voted by short term observation, and they observed that they were paying a lot more for things, haircuts and groceries were now more.

Groceries were always tax free. I am not talking about junk food.

its a pretty simple equation
pst/gst will benefit some
hst will benefit some
some are just pissed at the gov and see this as a way to kick them in the balls
some don't know how to spell thier name much less understand the real financial differences between hst and pst/gst
in the end more people voted to go back to the old system. i can promise you one benefit from this whole thing that won't show up in any finances. by voting to go back the gov won't try to pull another bs move like that again. at least for a while. because they now realize that getting caught trying to make a change without telling anyone is a hell of a lot worse then publicly fighting to implement a change and slowly educating the public about what the gov feels are the benefits.

Are you even old enough to remember what it was like the last time the NDP ran the province? Sure the liberals aren't perfect but they have also been the best thing for this province for the last number of years. For all the public screw ups Gordo had (not politics related) he was an excellent premier. People are just too short sighted to realize this. And they wonder why he received the Order of BC, it's because he actually made a positive impact to BC during his tenure.

if the hst wasnt defeated and it goes down to 10%...do you think personal income tax would go down? either way i think they'll still do this to recoup the reduction that wouldve gotten through the hst...
i think this is in the same boat as the hst...the plans were there but kept hidden in the public eye...
i'm not an ndp supporter but imagine them going into an election and their platform is to put in the hst...that would be pretty funny...and for all the ndp haters out there, dont tell people that you didnt benefit when they were in government coz on a personal level, you probably did...
