If you have less then 24 hours to leave the city with traffic. What will be the top 5 things you'll take with you???

Considering what can fit in your car or truck.

Your Cell phone and wallet is obvious, besides that??

1. Find my family and My dog
2. Lots of water and food
3. My Clothes, blanket, hair gel and shaver.
4. PS3 (i don't know why i have this in my head) but can't fit tv..damn
5. passport

What type of disaster, did a meteorite strike the earth and lawlessness will reign for decades or did we have a magnitude 8 earthquake and things will be fucked up for a bit but go back to normal in a relatively short time period?

Meteorite
1. Lighter - to create fire, obviously.
2. Thick book - entertainment, infinite uses for paper.
3. Machete - chop stuff up, weapon.
4. Rope - Building shelter, climbing, various uses.
5. Backpack - ^to carry that stuff around.

Earthquake
1. Book - entertainment
2. Alcohol - entertainment, cleaning wounds.
3. My cat - entertainment, make sure he doesn't die, self-defence.
4. More Alcohol - I'll set up a cash bar in the red cross shelter.
5. Weed - I'll sell that at the red cross shelter too.

Do you actually have weapons and ammo at home?

1. Wallet/ID/Passport
2. Tons of bottle water and tons of can food
3. can opener/knife/fork/spoons
4. Any weapons I could get my hands on
5. some durable clothes jeans/T-shirts/jacket/runner

Assuming I am with my family. Honestly the most important thing is water, food and uiliites to open them. When you are running away who cares about games and stuff lol the key is to surive and to do that we need food and water only.

IMO the best thing to take with you is knowledge.
look up survival guides for building a fire, build shelter, gather fresh water, skills to determine what plants are edible... THEN put it to practice even if you dont need to.

try building a fire in heavy rain to see if YOU can do it. that way when the situation arises you KNOW you can do it and wont starve or freeze to death when the need for fire arises during a natural disaster that may never come.

the following is just a collection of items(not a complete list) i may bring with me depending on the type of disaster.

-1 hand gun with no extra ammo except what it can hold(not planning on using it)
-emergency multipurpose am/fm radio, usb charger(works on my i9100), hand crank or ac to charge unit.
-2x 2way radios.. i bought those on an NCIX sale.
-coleman cooler as a storage bin for stuff but can be used as a cooler for ice to store food longer
-a few personal tents and sleeping bags i stocked up when it was on clearance..
-camping equipment i collected over the years.
-i cannot trust to be able to access the internet in an event of a disaster so i have stored a collection of useful data. the data is what i feel is relevant to help me be be prepared for whatever arises. it is ever growing. (ie offline wikipedia (http://lifehacker.com/291518/build-your-own-offline-wikipedia))

So, when the "Big One" hits, it is not going to affect the rest of the world. How long will the people in the GVRD be stranded? It's not like a huge tsunami is going to wipe out all of Vancouver. I can see places like the North Shore, New West, or Coquitlam having landslides. Places like Richmond/Delta flooding or sinking, but nice neighbourhoods like the East End and FV should be safe, yes?

I'm just glad I'm not living in the West End (not because of hipsters, LOL).

Do people know where the Emergency Response Routes are? Do people even know what they are?

Some of the people I've talked to have this notion that when an earthquake hits, they need to get the hell out of the area ASAP.

As for guns, it's cool and all, but it's not like the Godless Commies, zombies, or aliens from Dimension X are invading.

I wAnder how earthquake resistant houses and buildings are in Vancouver.

On a side note do you guys know where the shut off valves are for gas, water, electrical, etc?

BTW, I'm glad I live in a neighbourhood with lots of Italian families. Figs, tomatoes, peppers, and grapes everywhere.

Guns with high caps
lots of ammo for said guns
canned food
1 set of clothes for each type of weather (i.e. snow = jacket gloves etc)
huge backpack for it all.

Most of us need to cross a bridge to get the hell out of here, and if a big enough one hits that we need to evacuate, those bridges will not be standing.

My bad for using the outdated description (even though Delta, BC still calls them that).

Disaster Response Route.

Looks like this link may help explain...........

Disaster Response Routes (http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/popular-topics/driver_info/route-info/disroute/disaster_response_routes.htm)

Obviously, this system is not going to work unless the general public is made aware.

Public awareness and cooperation is necessary to keep these Disaster Response Routes clear following an earthquake or other disaster, in the interest of saving lives and protecting property.

There are signs along roadways in certain parts of BC (Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria), which indicate DRR designation. Many people believe these signs identify an evacuation route. NOT TRUE. Disaster Response Routes are required for the movement of responders and resources for emergency or disaster response. The designation of Disaster Response Routes means other roadways can be utilized for non-emergency traffic, commuting, or the unlikely event of an organized evacuation. Disaster Response Routes are NOT evacuation routes. They will be activated as needed during an event and it is recommended that everyone listen to the radio and television for public service announcements regarding emergency routes and their uses.

Had a Emergency evacuation session with a firefighter. He said if a severe disaster happen in lower mainland, you will see police, firetrucks and ambulance going around the cities and report what they found to the government. Then the government will put all the info and make a plan and act accordingly.

They are told not to rescue anyone even you are injured. That comes at later, their first task is to do the survey around cities. Therefore, you gotta be prepared to survive for the first few days which is not easy

I'm surprised how very few people actually have an actual emergency kit prepared.

My little emergency kit has a
water purifier+6pack of bottle water(you can buy from any outdoor store, one is usually good for a few hundred gallons, it basically purify any water to micron levels)
a few cans/packs of tuna&cereal bars&chocolates (about enough to last a 5-7 days for 2 in any given weather. Always pack some sort of sugar items)
A weather-resistant blanket
A crank-powered radio
Letherman multitool with a fire starter wrapped
A few big ass plastic bag
Certified copies of my IDs
LED flashlight

All in a waterproof small carry bag.

I think it cost me like 150 bucks to put it together? (thanks to free lawyer friend to certify copies for me) and it's THE bag I would first grab in any emergency event.

It's pretty logical to try to assess the situation before putting things in action... Take care of yourself if you don't want a hand from the gov. You're not being prevented from doing so.
